Much-loved Instagram feature is no longer available to millions after overnight

Metro7 hours ago
Meta has removed a popular function from Instagram for millions of users.
Instagram Live was introduced in 2016, allowing anyone to broadcast an hour-long video stream to their followers or a room of three guests.
But Meta, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp, quietly updated its rules last month to restrict who can go live.
Instagram's Help Center states: 'Only Instagram users who have a public account with 1,000 followers or more will be able to start a Live broadcast.'
Now, users who don't have public accounts and have fewer than 1,000 followers will be greeted by a pop-up when they try to go live.
'Your account is no longer eligible to go Live,' it says.
Around one in four Instagram users have fewer than 1,000 followers. With some 2billion monthly users, this amounts to about 250million people.
Social media experts have criticised the move, saying that the shift will likely impact smaller content creators, aspiring influencers and regular people who use the feature to chat with close friends.
Media consultant Chad Teixeira told Metro: 'For smaller creators and aspiring influencers, it's a bit of a bittersweet change.
'Live was a fun, casual way to connect without overthinking, perfect for showing personality and building those first loyal followers.
'Now, it's all about hitting that magic 1,000 before you can beam yourself out in real time. Think of it as Instagram nudging you to focus on Reels, Stories, and Collabs first, then unlocking Live later.
'It's not the end of the road for breakout stars, just a shift in the journey. Creators can still grow by leaning into short, snackable content, jumping into collaborations, and building community in DMs and comments.'
One said on X: 'Can't go live cause I don't have 1,000 followers, b***h, I don't even like 1,000 people.'
Becky added: 'Can't do live videos on Instagram anymore without 1,000 followers, what the actual f**k, that's so unfair, I only have 118 followers.'
A user who said they often do live streams of themselves playing games said their most recent broadcast was 'prob my last'.
'I enjoyed just popping in once in a while and not feeling the pressure other apps force on you,' they added.
The social network did not give a reason for the change when approached by TechCrunch, other than to 'improve the overall Live consumption experience'.
Teixeira said Meta may have to 'reduce spam and align with other platforms' thresholds'. More Trending
The rule brings Instagram's live feature more in line with TikTok's as the short-form video app also requires users to have 1,000 followers or more.
YouTube, meanwhile, only asks channels to have 50 subscribers or more to go live.
Meta has been approached for comment.

Screaming match from hit Netflix movie used by US government for bizarre reason

The screaming match between Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver in the Netflix movie Marriage Story is being used to frighten wolves in the US – yes, really. The Oscar-nominated Noah Baumbach movie came out in 2019 and follows the messy divorce between Charlie and Nicole Barber, with one particular scene – a shouting showdown between the two of them – regularly making the social media rounds. In case you need your memory jogging – Adam Driver punches the wall in a rage. Little did we know, however, that soon Scar Jo's tears would transcend art and be implemented by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to scare off wolves who had been killing cattle and, further, tame livestock. 'I need the wolves to respond and know that, hey, humans are bad,' USDA Oregon district supervisor Paul Wolf told the Wall Street Journal about the utterly wild strategy. The sounds of the fictional fight are deployed via loudspeakers attached to drones across the Klamath Basin of southern Oregon after 11 cows were killed over a 20-day period – with officials already seeing results. The emotionally gut-wrenching scene is mixed in with a variety of other sounds, such as fireworks, gunshots, and even playing songs like AC/DC's Thunderstruck and Five Finger Death Punch's tune Blue on Black. According to the official website, the USDA's purpose is to 'provide leadership on food, agriculture, nutrition, and other issues based on public policy, available science, and effective management.' No doubt, this is one of the more unconventional methods they have rolled out as part of the practice of 'wolf hazing'. Since grey wolves are an endangered species, the drones provide a hands-off way to deter the deadly creatures without physically harming them. (No comment on the emotional impact of hearing the tearjerking scene.) The Jurassic World: Rebirth star reacted to the fight scene for Vanity Fair, calling the quips swapped between Nicole and Charlie 'so brutal'. 'Noah had such a specific idea of how he wanted to shoot this and then he had edited it in his mind. It's interesting even now watching it I am paying more attention to what shots he chose. 'It's such an interesting composition this fight scene. So carefully constructed.' More Trending Reflecting more on what the experience was like shooting the iconic scene, she explained that they were 'just in the truth of what they were doing' and it was shot over several days because the re-did the scene 'so many times'. 'We probably had the fight in its entirety 40 times, maybe more, like 50 times – more than that even when I think about it.' Marriage Story is available to stream on Netflix. Got a story? But he returned with this year's former Islanders to the villa to cast their thoughts on the final few couples. Fans backed the islander's votes and the brutal dumping of Meg Moore and Dejon Noel-Williams. And now four couples remain in the show, including bookies favourites Toni Laites and Cach Mercer, and Shakira Khan and Harry Cooksley. But now, Blu has hit back at Angel after she rejected him during his return to the villa. Taking to Instagram, the Love Island star was answering a question from fans which asked: "Be honest, how did it feel when angel said you couldn't turn her head?" The fan was referring to a conversation between himself and Angel during the jury challenge. Blue replied: "I didn't expect anything less, she's in a couple, so she's not going to say yes. "Also a lot of it got clipped, I said some other stuff, it just didn't get shown. "I've nothing against Angel and Ty. I think they are both amazing people. Awkward moment Love Island's Harrison calls girlfriend Lauren by his EX'S name live on TikTok - hours after coming face to face with her "I love them both, I literally couldn't have a bad word to say about any of them. "Yeah, I kind of expected it but I'm also gonna back myself. "You're going into Love Island, you've gotta back yourself." Meanwhile, a Love Island couple are seemingly being kept apart following the explosive Jury challenge on the show. The couple have been seemingly inseparable ever since but in a new TikTok live, Harrison told how he wasn't staying with Lauren. With the Islanders still all in Majorca following the vote, Harrison told his fans that he wasn't in the same villa as his girlfriend.

Zara McDermott and Louis Tomlinson take relationship to next level in sweet snap

Love Island star Zara McDermott and Louis Tomlinson took their relationship to the next level by going Instagram official this evening after sparking up a romance earlier this year Zara McDermott and Louis Tomlinson took their relationship to the next level and shared a sweet snap of them sharing a kiss on social media. The Love Island star and the One Direction singer have been dating for several months, but have been keeping their romance away from social media besides a few comments and likes. ‌ She was previously spotted singing along at her boyfriend's concert as the 28-year-old went to support her 33-year-old partner at his show in Zurich last month. The sighting comes not long after the loved-up couple were seen having fun together at this year's Glastonbury Festival. ‌ And now, Zara took to her Instagram page to share a selfie she took of the two sharing a kiss. In the snap, seemingly taken on holiday, Zara smiled as she held his cheek and gave him a kiss. Louis looked happy as he held the camera. It comes after Taylor Swift sparks engagement rumours as fans spot Travis Kelce's lock screen. ‌ Friends and fans were delighted with the social media milestone and rushed to share their happiness for the couple. "Yaaaay," Strictly Come Dancing's Tasha Ghouri wrote. Ellie Louise Leach added: "Soooooo here for this," and another posted: "Love seeing you glowing and happy." One fan joked: "I'm so happy that my boyfriend has a girlfriend." ‌ The couple first started romance rumours earlier in the year after being photographed on a cosy date in Suffolk. The moment in March came just a short time after Zara's split from her long-term boyfriend, Sam Thompson. Sam and Zara called time on their relationship for good in December 2024. They had initially met in 2019 after she shot to fame on Love Island. ‌ They took a break but soon got back together and seemed to be hopelessly in love until it was announced they went their separate ways after five years together. Despite Zara being in a new relationship, it's been said that Sam isn't so keen to date again. At one point, he dated Samie Elishi but they soon called time on their brief romance. After their split, he was spotted back on celebrity dating app Raya. He later made the decision to stay single for some time. ‌ Speaking on his Staying Relevant podcast, Sam said: "I'm going to work on myself. No dating, I'm not ready and I've realised that."
