Security top of mind ahead of Roots Picnic weekend after mass shooting in Fairmount Park
Philadelphia police are beefing up security now that the Roots Picnic weekend has arrived.
The two-day hip hop and R&B festival at the Mann Center in Fairmount Park draws tens of thousands of people annually. This year, heightened security is in place after a mass shooting in the same area that left two people dead and nine others injured on Memorial Day.
Police are planning to deploy uniformed and undercover officers at the Roots Picnic. They are also working to prevent large, unsanctioned gatherings at the event.
"We have a whole bureau of people in our intelligence bureau who do nothing but watch social media," Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore said. "We have these incidents where these car groups like to meet up, so we're constantly monitoring social media and reacting to what we see there."
Some festivalgoers said they welcome the extra police presence.
"I'm glad that Philly is taking that cautious effort to make sure we have a heightened police presence because we do want people to feel safe there," Peter Jordan from Richmond, Virginia, said.
This year's lineup includes several notable artists, including Philadelphia native and rap legend Meek Mill. Lenny Kravitz, Maxwell, GloRilla, Miguel and Tems will also take the stage.
"It's my second year going," Jaden Gibson from West Philadelphia said. "I'm excited to see some new faces there."
Eventgoers said they look forward to the music and the vibes.
"I'm super excited," Robert Schwartz, co-founder of ACX1 Studios in Atlantic City, New Jersey, said. "It was supposed to rain. It's going to be a beautiful weekend. So many talented, amazing artists."

Inmate mistakenly released from New Orleans jail where 10 escaped
Authorities in New Orleans say they are on the hunt for an inmate who was released by mistake from the same jail where 10 broke out earlier this year. Authorities don't know whether Khalil Bryan, 30, was aware he was being released by mistake from the Orleans Justice Center on July 25, but said he was being put on notice with the announcement that he is a fugitive, said New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. Bryan was being held on charges including possession of stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting an officer, and also had an active warrant for aggravated assault with a firearm, domestic abuse, child endangerment and home invasion, Kirkpatrick said. The error comes as the jail and the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office are still reeling from the escape of 10 inmates in the early morning hours of May 16 when authorities say the inmates exited through a hole in a cell wall after ripping out a toilet. One of those inmates, convicted killer Derrick Groves, has yet to be recaptured. "I do want to make an appeal to Mr. Bryan, even though it was a mistaken release from custody, you are on notice you are a fugitive. I'm going to ask that you turn yourself in," Kirkpatrick said at a news conference, adding that Bryan could face additional charges. The release stemmed from a case of mistaken identity, when Bryan was confused with another inmate with a similar last name, said Sheriff Susan Hutson. Hutson said the jail's system has ways to catch such discrepancies, but the release was due to "human error." An investigation and review of protocols is underway and disciplinary action would be forthcoming, she said. "I want to make a sincere apology to the people of New Orleans. The mistaken release of Khalil Bryan was a serious error and as sheriff I take full responsibility," Hutson said. "I want the public to know this should not have happened. It was a failure of internal processes and the public has every right to expect better." Still, Hutson said mistakes do sometimes happen in a system that processes 11,000 inmates every year. The New Orleans Police Department's violent offender squad was actively searching for Bryan, Kirkpatrick said. Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts should contact authorities, she said. Anyone found to be harboring him may also face charges. 1 of 10 inmates still at large in New Orleans jailbreak Groves, 27, is the last remaining inmate who broke out in May still on the run. The last arrest of those fugitives was made in June, nearly six weeks after the escape. Some were nabbed by authorities as far away as Texas. The nine inmates who have been recaptured all pleaded not guilty to charges related to the escape on July 23, the Louisiana Attorney General's Office said. Groves was convicted of two charges of second-degree murder and two charges of attempted second-degree murder in October in connection with a shooting during Mardi Gras in 2018. Groves also has been awaiting sentencing on a manslaughter charge since October. Since the escape, at least 16 other people have been arrested and accused of helping the inmates break out or stay on the run, including family members and at least one jail employee. The Boys made sure to leave its mark at San Diego Comic-Con, capping off the Gen V panel with the very first teaser for its fifth and final season. Shown to fans in Ballroom 20, the teaser didn't waste a second serving up bloody chaos, shocking moments, and some big surprises that the fans loved. The footage was a rapid-fire glimpse into the carnage we've come to expect. Among the standout moments: a mysterious new supe vomiting what looked like a bloody hairball onto someone else, and a gruesome scene involving a violent explosion inside a bathroom stall. So, it's still very much The Boys we know and love, unapologetically brutal and darkly hilarious. One of the more crazier moments came from Antony Starr's Homelander. In the teaser's most chilling line, he declares, 'This is a safer, more god-fearing nation,' his voice echoing like a sermon to an unseen crowd. After the events of Season 4, Homelander's grip on America has only tightened. He's essentially the power behind the White House now, the country is under martial law, and those who refuse to 'make America super again' are being hunted, including Butcher and his crew. Fans also got a few unexpected cameos. Seth Rogen, an executive producer on the series, pops up once again. Then Supernatural 's Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins also both make appearances in quick shots. This marks yet another reunion for showrunner Eric Kripke, who previously brought Jensen Ackles ( Soldier Boy ) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Joe Kessler) into the fold. Returning cast members for this final chapter include Jack Quaid, Karl Urban, Jessie T. Usher, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Laz Alonso, Nathan Mitchell, Colby Minifie, Cameron Crovetti, Susan Heyward, and Valorie Curry. New faces joining the chaos are Daveed Diggs and Paul Reiser. As for Seth Rogen's role? That remains to be seen, but given his track record of stealing scenes, fans are ready for whatever he brings. The endgame for The Boys is coming, but it's not arriving tomorrow. The fifth and final season will premiere sometime in 2026 on Prime Video.
