Spanish coach Xavier Pascual has been appointed as Egypt's national men's handball team coach; the Egyptian Handball Federation (EHF) announced on Tuesday.
The 57-year-old former Barcelona coach replaces fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Pastor, who had led the "Pharaohs" since 2023 but opted not to renew his contract.
Pascual's deal will run through to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the EHF said.
A highly decorated coach, Pascual guided Barcelona to numerous domestic and European titles, including the EHF Champions League crown in 2021.
Most recently, he took charge of Hungary's Telekom Veszprém, who won the 2024 IHF Super Globe, with Egyptian star Yehia El-Deraa among the squad.
Pascual's tasks will include preparing Egypt for the 2026 African Men's Handball Championship in Rwanda and the 2027 IHF World Championship in Germany.

Bougherra names Algeria's final CHAN squad amid big-name inclusion

Published: Wednesday, 23 July 2025 Algeria coach Madjid Bougherra has finalised his 26-man squad for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) and key inclusions have boosted the Local Fennecs' push for continental glory. With CHAN 2024 set to kick off on 2 August in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, Bougherra trimmed his preliminary list of 28 to 26 players, including some of the country's key players Aymen Mahious in the final squad. Mahious joins a strong attacking line-up that also features Meziane, Mechid, and young talents Akhrib and Kohili. In midfield, the presence of experienced players like Benkhemassa and Draoui offers tactical versatility, while the defence boasts a familiar spine from top clubs such as USM Algiers and MC Algiers. The squad released by Algeria coach is seen as extremely strong even though it excludes midfielder Abderaouf Benguit and striker Redouane Berkane—two players seen as potential starters. Benguit, of CR Belouizdad, is believed to have missed out due to injury, while Berkane, who impressed with 10 domestic goals last season, is in advanced talks to join Belgian top-flight club Zulte Waregem, making him ineligible for the local-only tournament. Bougherra's final squad reflects a balance of domestic experience and rising talent, but the loss of Berkane, in particular, limits attacking options. The JS Kabylie forward was tipped to be a breakout star of the tournament before his impending European move ruled him out. The Desert Foxes A', runners-up in the last edition hosted on home soil, will now aim to go one better. Algeria have been drawn in a competitive Group C alongside South Africa, Uganda, Guinea, and Niger. Algeria begin their CHAN campaign against Uganda and are determined to shed the runner-up tag this time. Athletic Bilbao beat Atletico Madrid to Areso signing - World

Athletic Bilbao signed Osasuna right-back Jesus Areso on Tuesday despite reports Atletico Madrid had agreed a deal for the Spaniard. "Athletic and Osasuna have reached a deal for the transfer of the full-back Jesus Areso, who signs for the red-and-whites until June 30, 2031," said Athletic in a statement. Areso, 26, played for Athletic's reserve side until 2021, when he joined Osasuna, and his return cost the Basque side up to 12 million euros ($14 million), according to Spanish reports. Ernesto Valverde's Athletic finished fourth last season in La Liga and managed to tie down winger Nico Williams earlier this summer despite interest from Barcelona. Crystal Palace appeal against Europa League demotion - World

Crystal Palace have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over their demotion from the Europa League to the UEFA Conference League. The London club, who won last season's FA Cup, fell foul of UEFA's rules governing multi-club ownership. European football's governing body determined that as of March 1, American businessman John Textor had control or influence in Palace and French club Lyon. It means under UEFA rules they are unable to compete in the same European competition and Lyon held on to the Europa League spot by virtue of their higher league position. Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League, are expected to replace Palace in the second-tier Europa League should the punishment stand. The Court of Arbitration for Sport issued a statement on Tuesday confirming it had received an appeal by Palace and would issue a decision by August 11 at the latest. The CAS confirmed Palace were seeking to take either Forest's or Lyon's place in the Europa League. Textor has agreed to sell his stake in Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, but the move came too late to satisfy UEFA.
