Service for WW2 British soldier killed in Alderney
A memorial service has been held for the only British serviceman to die on active duty in Alderney during World War Two, 80 years on.
About 40 people attended the service on Saturday, at Sapper George Onions' grave in St Anne's church cemetery, on the island.
The Royal Engineer died on his 22nd birthday on 21 June 1945 while clearing the island of mines after the German Occupation.
The service, led by Reverend David Stretton, included wreath laying by States of Alderney president William Tate, schoolchildren and reservists from the Guernsey section of the Jersey Field Squadron.
A simple service is held annually to remember Sapper Onions, who was born in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent.
It is believed he died while unloading a lorry carrying supposedly decommissioned mines and detonators, one of which accidentally exploded.
The organisers, Alderney Churches Together said Sapper Onions is remembered with affection for both his service and his engagement with the local community.

Care home staff grant resident's long-held wish
A resident's long-held wish has come true thanks to the kindness of care home staff. Katie Lowe, who has lived at Longueville Court in Orton for a year, had always wanted to enjoy an afternoon tea and a shopping trip. After learning of her dream through the home's 'wishing tree', staff organised an afternoon tea at The Kitchen in Spalding followed by shopping at Springfields. Ms Lowe said: "It was a lovely afternoon. How to enter The Bolton News Education Awards 2025
The Bolton News Education Awards are back for 2025 and we need you to nominate amazing people who make education in the area outstanding. The awards, of which Bolton Council are the headline sponsor, are a chance to celebrate the very best of schooling in Bolton. We believe it's essential to acknowledge everything fantastic about education locally and we need your help to do it by nominating incredible people. The winners of this year's awards will be honoured in a special winners' supplement in The Bolton News in November, as well as being featured in articles on our website. Entries for the awards are now open - please email the editor ( for an application form or if you have any queries. All schools and colleges are welcome to enter as long as they are based in the borough. Entries are invited from teachers, parents, governors, pupils, and anyone with knowledge of a particular school or education establishment. Individuals or institutions can enter more than one category, but this should be made clear when submitting entries. The deadline for entering the awards is Tuesday, September 30. Also, they will have applied themselves to every task and set a good example to other pupils.
