Man protests pothole mishap with bizarre demonstration
1 2 Kanpur: A bizarre protest in the city by a man gained widespread attention when he was seen lying in a water-filled pothole on the road with a bed and pillow, raising slogans. The protest video went viral on social media. A schoolgirl was injured after falling into a water-filled pothole in the Barra-8 area of the city. Her father protested by lying in the water with bedding, chanting 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', highlighting the authorities' neglect of the road despite several complaints. Following his daughter's bicycle accident on the damaged road between Ramgopal Chauraha and Jarauli, he lay in the muddy water with bedding. The video also shows a school bus passing by, with children inside joining in the slogans. His unusual protest against the government inaction gained traction when the video went viral on Sunday. Sheelu Dubey, a trader and resident of I Block Barra-8, emphasised the poor condition of the road connecting Ramgopal Chauraha to Anand South City in Jarauli. His daughter Ananya, a class 4 student, was injured when her bicycle hit a pothole ten days ago. Locals supported the protest by planting rice saplings in the potholes. Dubey's social media appeals were ignored. He noted that the busy road, used by thousands of vehicles and leading to a local representative's school, poses a danger to commuters. He said, "Every day, someone gets hurt falling in the mud. The administration seems to be waiting for a fatality. " The residents shared their experiences on this hazardous road, reporting various accidents and vehicle damage. The road's importance as a link to schools, markets, and homes makes its condition particularly concerning for frequent users. Following the protest, the municipal corporation officials inspected the site and promised swift action. In haste, they filled the potholes with soil using a JCB. Mayor Pramila Pandey said that officials would visit the site on Monday. For now, mud and gravel were spread on the road to prevent accidents. "Efforts will be made to start road construction after the rains," the mayor said. However, social media users questioned whether filling the potholes with soil would solve the problem, suggesting it might worsen the situation. The situation has sparked broader discussions about infrastructure maintenance in the city's residential areas. Reports of similar issues from other areas have led to calls for a comprehensive road maintenance plan. Local politicians have raised this issue, requesting regular inspections and timely repairs. Three arrested for robbing taxi driver at gunpoint
Times News Network Panchkula: Local police arrested three individuals—including the mastermind—who were allegedly involved in robbing a taxi driver at gunpoint. The arrest led to a breakthrough in a previously unsolved 2023 dacoity case, the police claimed. Addressing a press conference, ACP Crime Arvind Kamboj revealed that the case was originally registered at Pinjore police station on December 5, 2023. The complaint was lodged by the victim, Shanky Kashyap, a resident of Panipat. Kashyap reported that on the night of December 4, three men hired his taxi from Panipat Railway Station to Pinjore. On the way, two more individuals boarded the vehicle near Chandimandir toll plaza. Around 11PM, the five suspects diverted the taxi toward a secluded area near Kheda Basela village on Pinjore-Nalagarh road. There, they assaulted the driver, threatened him with a firearm, and stole his mobile phone and Rs 4,000 in cash. They fled the scene in his taxi. Following the FIR, police recovered the stolen vehicle from Dadumajra, Chandigarh, but the culprits remained at large. Recently, police received a tip-off that the two suspects—Dheeraj, a resident of Brahmanagar, Karnal, and Shiva alias Kaju, a resident of Rajiv Colony, Karnal—were hiding in Karnal. Acting on the intelligence, the police apprehended both individuals on July 31. They were presented in court on August 1 and remanded to seven days of police custody. During interrogation, the two accused revealed the identity of a third accomplice—Devendra Rana, also from Karnal—who was arrested on August 1. All three have been booked under BNS Section 395 (dacoity), Arms Act, and other charges. ACP Kamboj shared details about the criminal backgrounds of the accused. The mastermind, Dheeraj, is a habitual offender with seven prior cases registered against him, including an attempted ATM robbery in Haridwar. He was currently out on bail. The other two accused also have two previous cases each registered against them. Police are now investigating their criminal history and pursuing two other suspects who are at large. Efforts are underway to recover the illegal weapons and other stolen items used in the robbery. Police examine videos after BJP councillors booked for altercation with Ludhiana mayor
Ludhiana: Police in the city are reviewing video footage following a heated altercation at the Zone-D office of mayor Inderjit Kaur that resulted in charges against two BJP councillors, the husbands of three women councillors, and more than 20 others. The incident unfolded recently, when BJP members of the house arrived at the municipal corporation office seeking a meeting with the mayor. Tensions escalated, leading to what police describe as intimidation and physical confrontation. A complaint filed by assistant sub-inspector Sudagar Singh, who serves as the mayor's security officer, suggests that the situation became hostile after several people entered the office claiming to be councillors. Mayor Kaur alleged that not all present were elected. As discussions grew heated, three men — Kulwant Singh Kanti, Vishal Gulati, and Jatinder Goryan, all spouses of sitting councillors — allegedly argued with and threatened the mayor, restraining her from leaving the office. Councillors Mukesh Khatri and Gauravjit Singh Gora were also accused of aggressive behaviour and reportedly attempted to assault the mayor before allegedly manhandling the ASI. Following the ASI's intervention, the group reportedly continued with abusive language before leaving the premises. Division Number 5 police have filed an FIR against councillors Gauravjit Singh Gora (Ward 80), Mukesh Khatri (Ward 76), Kulwant Singh Kanti (spouse of Kuldeep Kaur, Ward 33), Vishal Gulati (spouse of Ruchi Gulati, Ward 73), Jatinder Goryan (spouse of Ruby, Ward 17), and 20 unidentified individuals under charges of obstructing a public servant, assault, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation. Police say all relevant video evidence is under review and no further arrests or action will be taken until they have examined the footage thoroughly. The BJP members of the MC house, meanwhile, have maintained a sit-in protest outside the mayor's office since Friday night, demanding an apology from mayor Inderjit Kaur over alleged misbehaviour. A senior police official said the investigation was in progress and any further steps will depend on what the video evidence reveals.
