Kerala Police join hands with Milma for awareness against cyber fraud

The Hindu24-05-2025
The Kerala Police are joining hands with the State Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, alias Milma, for creating awareness on cyber security.
In view of increasing number of people falling prey to cyber fraud, the State police came out with an innovative drive, displaying their cyber helpline numbers on the Milma milk packets being distributed in the State.
Kerala Police's cyber helpline number, 1930, and cyber safety messages will be printed on Milma milk packets distributed in the State from June 25 onwards, a police statement said on Saturday.
30 lakh houses
The partnership would help reach cyber security messages and police toll-free number to approximately 30 lakh houses, headquarters ADGP S. Sreejith said.
Most of the victims of cyber fraud are ordinary people who are not sufficiently aware of such traps, he said. The new initiative is expected to take the awareness messages to remote areas as people use the Milma milk extensively even there, he said.
The objective of the joint campaign is to enable people to face the digital world with caution, the officer added.
Limited to youngsters
The statement further said the current cyber awareness messages and cautionary advice are limited to youngsters who use social media, and therefore fail to reach a segment of population that include homemakers, elderly and so on.
The present joint campaign with Milma is expected to address this issue to some extent, it said.
As per statistics, Malayalis have lost ₹1,200 crore to cyber fraud in the last three years, the police statement added.

Dowry: Kerala HC seeks govt stand on publication of data

Kochi: High court has sought instructions from the state govt regarding the publication of data on the number of complaints received and the action taken in relation to dowry demand incidents. The directive was issued by a bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the constitutional validity of Section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, on the ground that it also penalises the giving or abetment of dowry. HC adjourned the matter to August 7. Section 3 of the Act prescribes penalties for giving, taking, or abetting the giving or taking of dowry. The petitioner, Tellmy Jolly of Ernakulam, contended that penalising the dowry giver, often the victim or a family member, acts as a deterrent to reporting dowry-related harassment due to fear of self-incrimination. She sought to strike down Section 3 to the extent that it criminalises the giving of dowry or its abetment. In support of her plea, the petitioner cited data from the Kerala Police website indicating that 102 dowry deaths were reported between 2016 and May 2025. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Experience next-level CPAP comfort with Resmed AirSense 11 ResMed Enquire Now Undo She also referred to recent cases of young women dying by suicide or under suspicious circumstances, allegedly due to dowry-related harassment. Malayalam Rapper Vedan Booked For Rape After Doctor Accuses Him Of False Marriage Promise, FIR Filed

Kerala Police have registered a rape case against rapper Vedan (Hirandas Murali), accused of repeatedly raping a young doctor after false marriage promises. Rapper Vedan, whose real name is Hirandas Murali, is facing serious allegations after a young doctor filed a police complaint accusing him of rape. The Kerala Police registered the case on Wednesday under IPC Section 376(2), which deals with repeated sexual assault, based on the doctor's statement that Vedan had sexual relations with her over a period of time after promising marriage, as per a report in The Indian Express. The complainant told Kochi city police that the incidents took place between 2021 and 2023. According to her statement, she and Vedan first connected through social media, after which their relationship developed. She claimed that he took her to various places and had sex with her multiple times, promising to marry her. But when he later changed his mind and backed out, she was left emotionally devastated. Since the alleged incidents happened before the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita replaced the Indian Penal Code, the police registered the FIR under the old IPC. This is not Vedan's first brush with the law. In April, he was arrested in Kochi under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for possessing six grams of ganja. He also faced a wildlife case for wearing what was suspected to be a leopard tooth pendant. That incident had sparked debate online, with some accusing forest officials of reacting to it. Recently, the University of Calicut included one of Vedan's songs, 'Bhumi Njan Vazhunnidam (The Earth Where I Stay)," in its Malayalam literature syllabus. The song was meant to be studied alongside Michael Jackson's 'They Don't Care About Us." However, the BJP protested the move, writing to the Governor and asking for Vedan's work to be removed from the curriculum, pointing to his involvement in a drug case.
