Govt and Mala villagers undertake eco-drive project under MGNREGA

Udupi: An environmentalist is serving as a vital link between the govt and the public, facilitating a conservation initiative under the MGNREGA programme that merges ecological restoration with rural employment in Mala village.
In collaboration with the social forestry department, residents of Mala village are undertaking an ecological restoration project under the MGNREGA scheme. The effort began in Sept last year when environmentalist Arathi Ashok submitted a proposal for a green project on the cut road in the village. With 5–10 locals ready to participate, the project was greenlit, and by April, the work order was issued after an inspection by the Range Forest Officer (RFO).
Arathi told TOI that the project involves planting 150 saplings (local species supporting the biodiversity of the Western Ghats) on a 1.5km stretch of the two-kilometre Gundipalke-Mala road. A total of Rs 2 lakh was sanctioned, covering material costs and wages. The road is lined with saplings protected using bamboo fences and 150 acacia sticks, safeguarding them from grazing animals. Locals Govinda Gowda and Santhosh took the lead in managing and distributing bamboo fencing materials to each planting spot, with 30 saplings assigned per location.
An MGNREGA project board has also been installed on-site.
She said that so far, 70 saplings were planted manually, with work timed perfectly in June when the soil is soft and rainfall is manageable. The initiative helps in environmental restoration, but also offers a valuable income opportunity, especially for rural women, with a simple process of taking before and after photos of their work to ensure transparency and credit.
"Though such projects are popular in Kerala, they remain under-utilised in Karnataka. However, the Mala initiative is proving that change is possible when local people take the lead. Looking ahead, plans are in place to dig percolation pits in the next phase, particularly in areas where afforestation was taken up by the social forestry department. Coming Sept, attention will turn to weeding and fertilising the planted saplings," Arathi said.
The success of this project lies not just in the green cover but in its potential to attract more funds, empower rural communities, and combat poverty through sustainable livelihood. "For initiatives like this to truly scale as a national model, panchayat members must play an active role in informing citizens about such govt-supported schemes, something that, unfortunately, rarely happens in practice. While there is institutional support and intent to expand green cover, these programmes often remain underutilised simply because people are not made aware of them.
Concerned authorities must treat such awareness as a mandatory responsibility," she said.

Bihar cabinet approves Rs 888 cr plan to develop Sitamarhi's Maa Janaki Temple: CM Nitish Kumar

Patna (Bihar) [India], July 1 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced that the state cabinet has approved a comprehensive development plan for Punaura Dham, the revered birthplace of Goddess Sita in Sitamarhi district. The plan includes the construction of a grand temple and other structures, modeled after the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra in Ayodhya. The cabinet has approved a budget of Rs 882.78 crore for the construction of the temple at Punaura Dham, which is considered to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita, the wife of Ram. 'I am extremely delighted to inform that the birthplace of Mother Janaki, Punaura Dham, Sitamarhi, has received approval from the cabinet today for a comprehensive development plan, including the construction of a grand temple and other structures,' the Bihar CM wrote in a post on X in Hindi. Mentioning plans to lay the foundation stone by August, just a month away, the post added, 'The cabinet has approved a budget of 882 crore 87 lakh rupees for the comprehensive development plan prepared for Punaura Dham. The implementation of this plan will commence soon. I have instructed that its foundation stone be laid by the month of August. We are determined to complete the construction of the grand temple in Punaura Dham, Sitamarhi, at the earliest.' 'Its comprehensive development will be carried out on the lines of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirth Kshetra, Ayodhya. The construction of the grand temple of Mother Janaki in Punaura Dham is a matter of fortune and pride for all the people of the country and especially for all of us in Bihar,' his post said. Earlier on June 22, the Chief Minister had revealed that the designs for the 'holistic development' of the temple have been finalized a dedicated trust has also been formed to expedite the construction. The new design plans include a 151-foot-tall structure, wide walkways, and ample green cover, making it ideal for devotees to visit and pay homage to Goddess Sita. Punaura Dham, also known as Maa Janaki Janmabhoomi Temple, is widely considered to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita, the wife of Ram. After the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, multiple people associated with the Janaki temple brought gifts for Lord Ram during the Pran Pratishtha ceremony held on January 22, 2024. According to Bihar tourism, Punaura Dham also contains other attractions, like a lake which is believed to help with her pregnancy, and Panth Pakar, which is associated with Sita's marriage. Work is also ongoing to establish a road connection between Ayodhya's Ram Mandir and Maa Janaki temple, known as 'Ram-Janaki Marg. ' In September last year, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar urged PM Modi to expedite the construction of the connection. The CM also asked for a Vande Bharat connection to be started between the two cities. Photo: UN Women Asia and the Pacific/Flickr (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 DEED) New Delhi: More than 60,000 beneficiaries under the Delhi government's Women's Pension Scheme have been found to be ineligible after a large-scale verification exercise undertaken by the Women and Child Development (WCD). 'The verification revealed several instances where women no longer met the eligibility criteria but continued to receive the pension. These included remarried women claiming to be divorced, employed women drawing assistance despite a steady income and others who no longer resided at their registered addresses,' said an official, reported the Press Trust of India. Under the pension scheme, widowed, divorced, separated and destitute women get financial assistance of Rs. 2,500 each month. Officials said that a door-to-door verification drive launched in November last year revealed 'widespread discrepancies' which led to the removal of 60,000 beneficiaries who have been found to be ineligible. The verification drive was conducted by Anganwadi workers and covered around 4.25 lakh beneficiaries of the scheme. 'The verification drive has been completed in all districts and necessary corrections have been made to the database. Pension payments have been discontinued for those found ineligible and resumed for verified beneficiaries. At present, around 3.65 lakh women are receiving regular pension under the scheme,' said the official. The scheme was first introduced in 2007-08 to provide a regular source of income to economically weak widows but over the years the amount under the scheme was increased and eligibility expanded to include other categories of women as well.
