New Jersey police officers rescue driver moments before train crash
A little after midnight on May 12, township officers Devin Hinchcliffe and John Ward responded to a report of a car stopped on the Norfolk Southern tracks at the New Brunswick Avenue crossing, police said.
Upon their arrival, officers tried to tell the driver to get out of the vehicle, but he was too impaired to follow instructions, according to police.
Officers recognized the imminent danger posed by an approaching train and quickly pulled the driver out of the car and carried him to safety just seconds before the engine arrived and smashed the vehicle, police said.

"Their quick action prevented a potential tragedy, and we commend Officer Hinchcliffe and Officer Ward for their prompt and effective response," said a post on the department's Facebook page.
Police have not released the name of the driver.

Who ran over flock of geese in Middlesex County? Police want to know
Spotswood police are investigating after someone apparently ran over a flock of geese in the area of Devoe Avenue near Devoe Lake on July 14. Officers responded around 6:45 p.m. on reports that a vehicle had struck multiple geese that were crossing the roadway where they found seven dead geese in the street and the suspect vehicle gone from the scene, police said. It's unclear whether the collision was accidental or intentional, police said, and the department is reviewing available surveillance footage from both nearby businesses and residences. Police are requesting assistance from any witnesses who may have observed the incident. Geese are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and any intentional harm caused to them may constitute a violation of both state and federal regulations. New Brunswick man wanted in cop's attempted murder captured by US Marshals
A New Brunswick man has been apprehended on charges he attempted to murder a North Brunswick police officer by ramming a police car in the parking lot of a Route 1 hotel in South Brunswick in May. After a month's long manhunt, Luis Duval-Jimenez, 31, was taken into custody June 18 by the U.S. Marshals Service in North Jersey in connection with the May 15 incident, according to South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka. Duval-Jimenez has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer, resisting arrest and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He has been remanded to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for a pre-indictment conference before Superior Court Judge Colleen Flynn on July 29. The incident began at about 12:35 p.m. when the North Brunswick officers were staking out a room at Hotel Vincenza on Route 1 in South Brunswick, looking for Duval-Jimenez. who was wanted as part of an extensive investigation into car thefts and frauds in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Hayducka said. But Duval-Jimenez accelerated the car and allegedly rammed the police vehicle as North Brunswick Police Lt. Frank Vitelli was getting out of the car, pinning his leg in the doorframe. North Brunswick Police Capt. Cory Harris attempted to open the driver's side door of the Honda to stop Duval-Jimenez from ramming the police vehicle but as the door opened, a loaded handgun dropped out onto the parking lot, Hayducka said. Duval-Jimenez drove out of the parking lot after he rammed the police vehicle. Vitelli was taken by South Brunswick EMS to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he was treated for a broken ankle. After the Honda Accord left the scene, South Brunswick officers located and arrested two people allegedly connected to the assault on the officer. Angelica Hernandez-Mayrena 25, of New Brunswick, was found nearby on Deans Lane, and Bryan Sanchez, 20, of New Brunswick, was located along Route 1. Hernandez-Mayrena was charged with criminal trespass and Sanchez was chargedwith hindering the apprehension of another. They were both released on a summons. Woodbridge jewelry store targeted in daytime smash-and-grab robbery
WOODBRIDGE – Police are investigating a daytime smash-and-grab robbery in which an undisclosed amount of jewelry was stolen from a store in the Iselin section. According to police, around 12:40 p.m. June 7 four people entered Virani Jewelers on Oak Tree Road and used hammers to smash display cases before taking an undisclosed amount of jewelry. Police said the robbery took about one minute. The four suspects then fled in a black SUV which was operated by a fifth suspect, police said. The robbery is similar to another daytime smash-and-grab theft. Two weeks ago, a large amount of jewelry was stolen from a Perth Amboy store. Around 2:30 p.m. May 22 the suspects went into Ruby's Jeweler, 171 Smith St., and began breaking the display cases and made off with the jewelry, according to police. No arrests have been announced in that case. And this isn't the first time Virani Jewelers has been targeted by thieves. In June 2022 a group of armed and masked suspects smashed display cases and filled bags with gold from the Virani Jewelers, 1394 Oak Tree Road. The store's security video, which was released on social media, captured the less than two-minute heist in which about eight suspects entered Virani Jewelers just before the business was set to close for the night. And in November 2008 burglars smashed the window of the Virani Jewelers Marconi Avenue store in the early morning hours and made off with about $50,000 worth of merchandise, according to police. The Virani Jewelers stores specialize in jewelry with South Asian styles, especially gold, some intricately designed pieces and sets with price tags of more than $7,000, according to its website.
