'I personally cannot wait to continue moving in the right direction'

Yahoo2 days ago
In the first year since Labour won the General Election, I've spent as much time as possible visiting residents across Newport West and Islwyn.
As Newport West and Islwyn was announced as a new constituency ahead of the 2024 election, I've been focusing my surgery sessions on the Islwyn side, holding extremely productive conversations in areas such as Argoed, Abercarn, and Blackwood.
As well as surgeries, however, I've also been out and about visiting vital community groups, charities, businesses and attending other local events. The most recent of which was Mount Pleasant Primary School in Rogerstone. It was wonderful to present awards to the children at the school, who had been recognised by the community council for their schoolwork surrounding British TV.
Reflecting on the past 12 months, I was thrilled to hear the news that around 100 new jobs for residents in Newport West and Islwyn are set to be created at British Airways seat manufacturer, Safran, during a visit to their base in Marshfield.
Job creation is something both UK Labour and Welsh Labour has at the forefront of its mind, highlighted during my visit to Newport's semiconductor plant with chancellor Rachel Reeves, and deputy First Minister of Wales, Huw Irranca-Davies.
It's predicted the world-class facility will directly support more than 500 highly skilled jobs thanks to a multi-million-pound investment from the UK Government.
With Parliament breaking for summer recess next week, this will give me a greater opportunity and more time to meet with people in the community, tackling important issues, and helping build on existing relationships.
A good example of that work came earlier this year in Peterstone, where I met with Newport City Council leader Dimitri Batrouni to discuss the amazing community action group who are looking to save the Six Bells Pub.
Looking towards the future for a moment, as well as hosting regular monthly surgeries throughout the summer, we have lots of hard work to do both locally and as nationally, and I personally can't wait to continue moving in the right direction under this Labour Government.
A year on from the election, and I cannot begin to express my gratitude to all the voters and the Labour members who supported me in the campaign and continue to support me now.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the fact that an ordinary girl like me from Duffryn High School can represent the people of our community in Parliament is something that I will never take for granted.
If you'd like me to visit your group or business in Newport West and Islwyn, then please do get in touch via ruth.jones.mp@parliament.uk

Record number of police officers sacked amid drop in force numbers

A record number of police officers were sacked from forces in England and Wales in the past year, new figures show. Latest Home Office data reveals 426 officers were dismissed or had their contracts terminated in the 12 months to March. This is up 17% year on year from the previous record of 365 and more than double the number fired at the start of the decade, when 164 officers were dismissed in 2019/20. The latest 12-month period also saw 4,806 officers voluntarily leaving policing: the second-highest number since records began in 2006 and down slightly from the peak of 5,151 in 2023/24. The figures come as ministers have sought to tighten rules on standards to improve confidence in policing, while they have also faced warnings from forces that funding falls short to keep its existing workforce. A total of 146,442 full-time equivalent (FTE) police officers were in post at the end of March 2025, down almost 1% from 147,745 at the same point last year, which was the highest in modern times. Last month, plans for an average 2.3% rise in police spending per year faced backlash from police leaders, who warned a projected £1.2 billion shortfall will continue to grow and leave forces facing further cuts. Acting national chairwoman of the Police Federation, Tiff Lynch, had said: 'We will lose 10,000 experienced officers a year to resignation by the end of this spending review period, driven out by poor pay and unacceptable working conditions.' Chairman of the National Police Chiefs' Council Gavin Stephens added that the amount 'falls far short' of what is needed to fund Government plans and to maintain the existing workforce. Ministers have committed to recruiting 13,000 more neighbourhood policing officers by 2029, with 3,000 extra recruits to be in post by April 2026. Reacting to the figures, the Conservatives said the falling police numbers were a 'devastating blow' to neighbourhoods dealing with rising crime and anti-social behaviour. The figures cover the last three months of the former Conservative government, and the first nine months of Labour in power. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said: 'Labour has let down policing and has let down the public. 'We need police to catch criminals, respond to 999 calls, investigate crime and patrol our streets. 'Labour has massively increased our taxes, squandered the money, and now they're reducing police numbers. The public are less safe as a result of Labour's incompetence.' The Home Office has been contacted for comment.

Side hustle earning Aussie up to $15,000 a year after 'rise in demand'

A Sydney woman has shared how she is making between $10,000 and $15,000 a year with a side hustle attending rental inspections. The rental market in Australia is still extremely competitive and it can be difficult for prospective tenants to attend inspections during the day or if they live interstate, providing a lucrative opportunity for some. Rose Le Sebvre has been doing rental inspections for others for the past five years, and was initially sparked during the pandemic when people weren't able to travel. The 58-year-old told Yahoo Finance she now often attends inspections for people who can't attend themselves due to work commitments, with some real estate agents also requiring someone to attend an inspection before applying. 'There are more and more weekday inspections coming up now. It used to be after hours on a Wednesday and weekends on Saturdays, but now there are open houses every day of the week, and that could be any time in the morning or afternoon,' she said. RELATED Couple's side hustle amid double redundancy secures $13 million fortune Centrelink's 'balancing' move could provide cash boost or expose debt Commonwealth Bank's fresh alert for millions over mass text message 'campaign' Le Sebvre works part-time in strata insurance valuation and said her job was flexible enough that she could attend inspections when they crop up. She gets the majority of her jobs through marketplace Airtasker, and also has relationships with real estate agencies, who recommend her to people who need multiple inspections done. She charges between $60 and $140 per job, depending on the size of the property in question. Each job usually takes between 45 minutes to one and a half hours. 'I offer two videos, so I do the streetscape outside the property, just showing the neighbourhood,' she said. 'I'll take notes of whether it's a combination of residential or retail and residential, what the parking is like, give them a rough idea of whether it's a quiet area or medium density. 'Then I do a walk-through internal.'Le Sebvre said she will point out any issues with the property, including wear and tear or mould, and show important aspects like storage space and stove tops, along with how many other people were at the inspection. She then provides 30 to 40 photos of the property, depending on its size, and marks their name off with the real estate agent. 'I can talk to them about the clients and give them a little bit of insight into them,' she said. Le Sebvre said the number of jobs she did each week varied, with some weeks averaging two or three jobs and others averaging eight. She is making between $10,000 and $15,000 a year with the side hustle. Initially, the money was put towards an overseas holiday, but this year she planned to use the extra cash to help with her daughter's upcoming wedding. Increased demand for people paid to attend rental inspections Airtasker said it has seen record demand for people being paid to attend rental inspections, with the biggest demand in Melbourne, followed by Brisbane and then Sydney. The average task price is between $40 and $200, with prices varying depending on how many inspections need to be completed. 'The rise in demand for property inspection tasks reflects the tightening vacancy rates in the rental market so it's great to see people tapping into the Airtasker community for help to make finding their next home easier,' Airtasker Founder and CEO Tim Fung said. Domain's latest Rent Report found that despite a slight easing in some cities, national vacancy rates are still below 2 per cent. Sydney vacancy rates are 1.1 per cent, Melbourne is 1.3 per cent and Brisbane 0.7 per cent. Darwin has the lowest vacancy rate at 0.3 per in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data
