UAE: Emergency response in Al Ain to be faster with new crises, disaster centre
The activation of Al Ain Centre forms a key pillar of The Emergencies, Crises and Disasters Management Centre - Abu Dhabi's (ADCMC) strategic growth plan to expand its geographic reach and field coordination capabilities. As a critical supporting infrastructure to the main operations centre in Abu Dhabi, the new centre will enable faster response times and more effective, localised decision-making during emergencies.
Dr Abdulla Hamarain Al Dhaheri, Executive Director of the Response and Recovery Sector, ADCMC, said, 'The launch of the Coordination and Monitoring Centre in Al Ain region marks a key strategic milestone in reinforcing the emirate's crisis preparedness framework.
"It aligns with the Abu Dhabi government's vision of developing an integrated, advanced and effective emergency management system. Our approach is proactive, built on close collaboration with key stakeholders to ensure the highest levels of field coordination and readiness for all possible scenarios.'
He noted that Al Ain Coordination Centre is a key component of a wider strategy to enhance institutional resilience and accelerate response capabilities, emphasising that effective field coordination is the cornerstone of any successful emergency management system.
'The new centre will enhance field capabilities in Al Ain and ensure round-the-clock readiness for any emergency,' Al Dhaheri added.
ADCMC continues to play a pivotal role in reinforcing the emirate's preparedness for all forms of emergencies, crises and disasters. It is responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of comprehensive emergency management policies, strategies, and plans, in close collaboration with local authorities and strategic partners.

Parkin to introduce nearly 30,000 new paid parking spaces in Dubai communities
Dubai's public parking operator is to roll out 29,600 new paid parking spaces in a number of communities thanks to a partnership with one of the emirate's leading investment companies. In a major expansion of its network, Parkin has joined forces with Dubai Holding, a government-owned conglomerate that includes major real estate developers Nakheel, Meydan and Dubai Properties in its portfolio. Under the partnership, Parkin will manage parking operations – including enforcement action – in a number of designated areas. Parkin said there would be a phased introduction of the scheme. It does not give a specific start date for the initiative but stated that it would have 'a moderate impact on operational income from mid-Q3 2025'. Parkin did not reveal the residential communities where paid parking operations would be activated. The National has contacted the company for further comment. Dubai Holdings has delivered more than 106,000 residential units and land plots in busy areas such as Palm Jumeirah and Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR). Parkin said the new paid parking zones were being introduced in response to increasing pressure on parking availability. The partnership aims to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and enhance the day-to-day mobility experience for residents and visitors, the parking operator added. The agreement will more than double the number of paid parking spaces in privately developed communities operated by Parkin, reaching about 50,400. 'This strategic partnership with Dubai Holding strengthens our presence in the private developer parking segment, enabling us to extend our market-leading parking solutions across key communities in the emirate, while delivering integrated urban mobility experiences that enhance our customers' quality of life,' said Mohamed Abdulla Al Ali chief executive of Parkin. 'The operational roll-out will proceed in phases, fully aligned with Parkin's rigorous operational standards and commitment to improving efficiency and day-to-day convenience. 'This collaboration represents a key milestone in Parkin's expansion strategy and underscores our dedication to continue developing efficient, sustainable and resident-centric infrastructure in support of Dubai's continuing expansion.' What is Parkin? Parkin was set up in January 2024 by the Dubai government to manage the emirate's parking infrastructure. Parkin manages more than 200,000 paid parking spaces across Dubai, including public parking and public multistorey car parks, as well as some privately owned parking spaces under long-term contracts. In April, Parkin set out new variable fees for parking in Dubai, including peak pricing for six of the 14 chargeable hours each day, from 8am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm. Sundays and public holidays are excluded. The company's other revenue streams include the enforcement and issuance of seasonal permits, parking reservations and other commercial activities. Its revenue jumped by nearly a third in February because of a major increase in the number of fines issued in the final three months of 2024. Parkin said it imposed about 509,000 fines in the final quarter of 2024, up 60 per cent on the 317,400 fines handed out in the last three months of 2023. The amount levied in fines rose to Dh77 million in the final quarter of 2024, up from Dh44.8 million in the last three months in 2023. The increase was partly the result of 'technology-based improvements to our enforcement framework', the company said. A vital aspect of this are the smart scan inspection cars run by Parkin, which operates more than 90 per cent of Dubai's on and off-street paid parking, in public areas and in car parks owned by developers. Parkin is to also manage about 2,100 parking spaces across 59 sites at Dubai's mosques, it was announced last week. One hour of parking during prayer time will be free of charge, Dubai Media Office reported. 'Operational roll-out is targeted to commence in August 2025,' the media office said on X.

Gulf banks post robust loan growth in Q2 amid easing regional rates
The largest banks in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region reported stronger loan growth in the second quarter of 2025 compared to a year ago, supported by lower regional interest rates and improved economic sentiment. Al Rajhi Banking & Investment Corp., based in Saudi Arabia, recorded the sharpest loan growth among the top five GCC lenders, with year-on-year expansion rising to 19.31 per cent, up from 7.37 per cent a year earlier. Saudi National Bank followed with loan growth accelerating to 12.21 per cent from 10.25 per cent in the same period last year. In the UAE, First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB), the country's largest lender, saw loan growth climb to 10.71 per cent, compared to 6.34 per cent a year earlier. FAB also raised its full-year loan growth forecast to the low double digits, up from a previous single-digit outlook. Emirates NBD Bank similarly revised its loan growth forecast to the low double digits after reporting a 14.28 per cent increase in Q2. Qatar National Bank (QNB) posted loan growth of 9.38 per cent in Q2 and raised its guidance to 7 per cent–9 per cent, up from 5 per cent–7 per cent previously. 'Almost half of the growth came from Turkey,' said Durraiz Khan, senior vice president for group financial consolidation, during a July 14 earnings call. According to a July 10 outlook report by S&P Global Ratings, loan growth in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE is expected to remain strong through the second half of 2025, in line with anticipated rate cuts from the US Federal Reserve, which the GCC nations are likely to mirror. The increase in lending activity also lifted net interest income (NII) across most major banks. Read: QNB's NII rose to $2.34bn from $2.12bn a year earlier, despite margin pressures from its Turkish operations. 'Deposits in Turkey reprice faster than loans,' said Khan, adding that QNB expects its net interest margin (NIM) to improve if Turkey lowers rates later this year. Emirates NBD, which operates in Turkey through its subsidiary DenizBank AS, reported a 22-basis-point decline in its Q2 NIM to 3.36 per cent. However, the bank expects its full-year margin to range between 3.3 per cent and 3.5 per cent, supported by a potential recovery in DenizBank's profitability. NII for the quarter reached approximately $2.28bn, marking a 6 per cent year-on-year increase. According to Fitch Ratings, GCC banks with Turkish exposure may benefit from reduced net monetary losses if inflation in Turkey continues to ease. Al Rajhi Bank led the peer group in NII performance, reporting a 25 per cent year-on-year increase to $1.95bn. Higher net financing, investment income, and banking services fees helped lift its Q2 net profit to $1.64bn, a 31 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. Yango Tech Retail, ROOTS partner to boost AI-powered retail in UAE
Yango Tech Retail has partnered with UAE-based food tech and retail company ROOTS to advance the digital transformation of its grocery operations. The collaboration will see ROOTS adopt a suite of Yango Tech's retail technologies, aimed at optimising every stage of the order lifecycle and enhancing the customer shopping experience. The partnership builds on ROOTS' existing use of Yango Tech's autonomous delivery robots, expanding into warehouse, picking and delivery management tools, as well as AI-powered product information systems. Key technologies being implemented include a warehouse management system for more efficient in-store order processing, a picker app for assembling customer orders, and a courier app for optimised routing and delivery. ROOTS will also integrate Yango Tech's product information management platform, which centralises product data and uses an AI 'image-to-card' tool to automate product listings. This will support faster onboarding, dynamic pricing, and more accurate product descriptions. 'We are committed to empowering ambitious businesses with innovative retail solutions that help them grow, improve efficiency, and deliver exceptional service,' said Max Avtukhov, Chief Executive of Yango Tech Retail. 'ROOTS is an exciting addition to our partner network. With the UAE's online grocery market projected to reach USD 15.4 billion by 2032, providing reliable, scalable technology has never been more important.' Florian Jansen, Founder of ROOTS, said, 'We put the customer experience at the centre of everything we do – from the way we source our products to how we deliver them. Yango Tech helps us automate and streamline where it matters, so our team can focus on what makes ROOTS special. This is not just about tech; it's about trust, speed, and scale.' The move aims to align with broader e-grocery trends in the UAE, where convenience is a key driver and fulfilment speeds are expected to drop from four hours to as little as 30 minutes by 2028.
