Sogip to create 30,000 jobs, locals urged to prepare

SIPITANG: The MYFutureJobs X SSMJ @ Sipitang 2025 Career Carnival, organised by the Sabah Maju Jaya (SSMJ) Secretariat, saw a strong turnout with around 1,100 attendees and 14 individuals successfully securing employment during the event. Held at Dewan Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pengiran Omar 2, the carnival attracted students, job seekers, and recent graduates from the district and surrounding areas. Decisions for other applicants are still pending. A total of 15 employers, including five oil and gas companies, took part alongside 15 exhibitors, offering a wide range of opportunities and information to the participants. Qhazanah Sabah Berhad Chairman and Sindumin Assemblyman, Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, officiated the event and delivered a special presentation titled Readiness to Embrace the Investment Impact at SOGIP. He said the need for the local community to understand and prepare for the opportunities arising from the development of the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP), which is expected to generate approximately 30,000 job opportunities during both its construction and operational phases. 'The spillover benefits from SOGIP are not limited to direct employment. Entrepreneurs, local vendors, farmers, livestock breeders, and fishermen will also stand to gain,' he said. Dr Yusof encouraged locals to be proactive by tapping into related support services such as car workshops, plumbing, electrical work, barbering, and accommodation facilities. 'At the same time, I must caution that if we are not prepared, these opportunities may be taken up by outsiders,' he added. Both stability and growth apparent under GRS: Duo

Kota Kinabalu: Two prominent business leaders lauded the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-PH government under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor for maintaining political stability and driving inclusive economic development in the State. Chief Executive Officer of Kumpulan BTC Berhad Datuk Abdul Kadir M.E. Sikkandar, said the current administration has created a conducive environment for business growth and investor confidence. He highlighted the government's commitment to transparency, inclusiveness and people-centric development, stating that Sabah today stands on a strong foundation. 'With continued leadership under Hajiji I am confident Sabah will scale even greater heights. 'Political uncertainty continues to challenge other parts of the country, but Sabah has emerged as a model of calm, unity and steady progress,' he said. Abdul Kadir said Kumpulan BTC Berhad, a homegrown company, has grown significantly under the current administration and now employs over 800 Sabahans across various sectors. He attributed the expansion to the state's stable political climate and pro-business policies under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan. 'The SMJ Plan has reenergised key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, infrastructure and renewable energy. 'While also opening up opportunities for local and Bumiputera entrepreneurs to thrive,' he said. Abdul Kadir who is also the Deputy President of the Dewan Usahawan Melayu Sabah observed a renewed sense of optimism among local entrepreneurs, especially younger Sabahans exploring opportunities in business, agriculture and innovation within the State. Meanwhile, prominent businessman Tan Sri TC Goh said the GRS government's economic stewardship has yielded remarkable results. 'The result exceeded expectations and solidifying its position as a capable administrator,' said the Sabah Advisory Council (SEAC) member. 'The Government's success is underscored by a dramatic increase in state revenue: nearly RM7 billion annually for 2022, 2023, and 2024 – a significant leap from RM3.5 billion in 2020,' Goh said. This growth, Goh said, mirrored a robust rise in Sabah's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), climbing from RM83.2 billion in 2023 to RM84.3 billion in 2024, coupled with a substantial increase in state reserves to RM8.6 billion. He said these figures demonstrate a healthy and thriving economy, directly attributable to the GRS government's effective management. Malaysian boy enters record books with amazing memory for world currencies

Devakshean could make history with his extraordinary ability to identify 65 currencies from various countries in a single minute. Thanks to this unique skill, his name has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) for the achievement of 'Most Foreign Currencies Identified by a Child in One Minute'. His mother, G. Devamalar, 37, from Negeri Sembilan, said her son began showing interest in national flags when he was just one year old, and could already accurately identify and name the Malaysian flag. 'From an early age, we could see his extraordinary abilities. When we showed him pictures or flags, he remembered them quickly. So, from there, we started training him, and at the age of two, he set a record by identifying over 200 countries and cities. 'His memory is truly exceptional—whatever we show him, he can remember. Not only flags and currency values but much more—he picks things up quickly,' she told reporters after a certificate of recognition was presented by MBR representative V. Menaga to Devakshean here today. Devamalar said she and her husband, A. Devakumaran, 41, have always supported their only child's interests and development. She also said it took about a month of preparation to train Devakshean before applying for MBR recognition this year. 'My son loves watching YouTube. So, we uploaded content such as lists of foreign currencies and the like to YouTube, and he learned on his own through that platform. He rarely plays—he enjoys reading books and learning on his own. That's just his nature. We've never forced him—it's his passion,' she said. Devamalar also hoped her son's extraordinary achievement would open doors to more opportunities, including possibly entering the Guinness World Records, and uncovering other potential areas that could be nurtured in the future. 'Not many people know him yet. I hope that through media coverage, more people will learn about him and he will have opportunities to go further,' she said. RM6.2m collected from companies with highest number of outstanding summonses: JPJ

The companies, 11 commercial goods companies and 17 bus operators, had reached out to the department after Transport Minister Anthony Loke gave them a two-week grace period beginning June 25 to settle their outstanding summonses, he added. 'So for the JPJ, we assist by issuing the latest records and how to settle them immediately. We do see all companies wishing to settle their outstanding issues,' he said at the media conference of the 2025 JPJ Family Day at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) sports centre here today. He thanked the companies that reached out for their cooperation, but noted that there were some others that have yet to settle their summonses but said that the department would give them a grace period of a month starting from July 9 for them to do so. 'If it remains unsettled, the JPJ will blacklist the vehicles under the companies. There are those that we have already blacklisted as they did not respond to us,' he added. He also said that commercial goods companies and bus operators were eligible for the RM150 compound rate that applies to all vehicles issued with Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) summonses.
