Mata hopes for '40 goals and 40 assists' from Fernandes next season

Former Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata says Ruben Amorim's side are set for a positive 2025-26 season, despite the difficult recent campaign.
The Spaniard spoke to MUTV after returning to the city to launch an art exhibition at the Manchester International Festival and backed United to turn their form around.

"Well, first of all, I hope that everyone can play good and everyone can bring the club to what I believe it deserves to be," Mata said. "It course, it has been a tough season and everyone was really excited about the [Europa League] final, which I watched from Australia, with the time difference.
"I was as sad as everyone with the final result.
"But I think and I really hope that next season is going to be better. I think the team is good. The coach has just barely arrived and I wish him the best. He is young, he has intensity and passion. And I hope he will do very, very well."
Mata remains friends with former United team-mate Bruno Fernandes and believes captain will be instrumental in shaping the club's future.

"Of course, I love Bruno," Mata said. "We speak a lot and I'm trying to always be there for him.
When you are winning and everything is going well, it is easy to be surrounding him. When things are not going well, is where I try to be there for him.
"I really hope that, next season, he scores 40 goals and he gets 40 assists, and is the MVP of the league.
"I think he's instrumental for the present and for the future of the club."

Her best WNBA game was vs. Fever this year. Now, Australian is Indiana's newest player

The Indiana Fever signed Australian forward Chloe Bibby to a seven-day contract. Bibby played five games for the Golden State Valkyries this season, averaging 6.4 points and 2.8 rebounds a game. Her best game of the season was June 19 against the Fever when she played a season-high 24 points and had a season-high 12 points with three rebounds and two made 3s. The 6-footer shot 42% (8-of-19) from behind the arc in her limited run with Golden State. Earlier this month, Bibby was part of the Australian national team that won the FIBA Asia World Cup. She averaged 8.0 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Opals, who beat Japan in the final on July 20. Bibby was a second-team All-Big Ten selection at Maryland in 2022 and honorable mention All-Big Ten in 2021 after spending her first three college seasons at Mississippi State. She has played most of her professional career overseas, earning MVP honors in Poland (2023-24) and Spain (2024-25). The Fever had an open roster spot after beginning the season with just 11 players because of salary cap restrictions. Caitlin Clark remains out with right groin injury with an uncertain timetable for a return. A seven-day contract is only available to teams in the second half of the season, and it allows teams flexibility when they don't want to commit to a guaranteed contract. Players will earn the prorated minimum base salary. They can sign up to three seven-day contracts with a single team, but can sign with multiple teams during that time. Teams can also elect to sign those players to a rest-of-season contract at any point. Fever Insider Chloe Peterson contributed to this story.

Most likely candidate for Spurs captaincy revealed if Son departs

Cristian Romero is emerging as Tottenham's new on-field leader, with the World Cup-winning defender the frontrunner to take over the captaincy if Heung-min Son completes a proposed move to LAFC, report Mail Sport on Friday. Romero's leadership credentials have grown steadily since his arrival in north London, but his partnership with Micky van de Ven during Spurs' impressive Europa League run last season firmly established him as the defensive cornerstone of Thomas Frank's side. Atlético de Madrid made enquiries earlier this summer, but Spurs have held firm, making it clear they would not entertain offers below £60m for the Argentine. With the Spanish club now backing off, Romero looks increasingly likely to play a pivotal role not just in defence, but in the dressing room as well. The 27-year-old has relished responsibility, and the departure of Son – who is expected to finalise his MLS switch after Spurs return from their Asia tour – could see Romero given the armband permanently. Tottenham's defensive structure is beginning to take shape around him. Kevin Danso has joined permanently following a successful loan from Lens, while Radu Drăgușin continues his recovery from a serious knee injury. Ben Davies, though traditionally a centre-back under previous managers, was deployed at left-back by Frank in the recent friendly against Reading. Meanwhile, Luka Vušković's future remains under consideration. The highly rated 18-year-old Croatian, signed for £12million from Hajduk Split at 16, is attracting interest from several Bundesliga clubs after standout loan spells in Poland and Belgium. Vušković impressed on his Spurs debut last weekend, scoring and assisting within eight minutes of a 2-0 win at Reading. However, despite his promising displays, he remains behind Romero, Van de Ven, Danso, and Drăgușin in the pecking order. Frank is understood to be weighing up whether Vušković should go out on loan again, potentially to the Bundesliga, or stay and gain experience in English football. Either way, Romero's status as the defensive leader – and perhaps the next captain – is already shaping the way Spurs manage the future of their young talent. 📸 Justin Setterfield - 2025 Getty Images
