Liverpool cancel planned preseason testing after Diogo Jota's death; Salah, Henderson pay tribute
A handful of players were due at Liverpool's Kirkby training base on Friday for testing after the summer break, but a staggered return will now begin from Monday to give the squad more time to process Thursday's news and say goodbye to their teammate.

A funeral for Jota and Silva are due to take place in Gondomar, on the outskirts of Porto, on Saturday.
Jota and his younger brother, who was also a professional footballer, were killed in the early hours of Thursday morning when their car came off the road in the province of Zamora, in north west Spain.
The pair had been en route to the port of Santander in northern Spain, where Jota intended to take a ferry back to the United Kingdom ahead of the start of preseason – having been advised by medics not to fly following a minor procedure.
Arne Slot, the Liverpool head coach, described the 'state of shock' at the club as 'absolute' in a statement on Thursday, and a number of Jota's teammates have said they are struggling to find the words to express their grief in tributes to the Portugal international, who was 28.
Salah, Liverpool's star forward, said the news had left him 'frightened' to return to the club for preseason, knowing Jota would not be there.
'I am truly lost for words,' the Egyptian posted on Instagram on Friday. 'Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break.
'Team mates come and go but not like this. It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go back.
'My thoughts are with his wife, his children and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.'
Liverpool have opened physical and digital books of condolence for supporters to sign, and thousands of fans have paid their respects to the pair with tributes outside Anfield and Molineux, the home of Jota's former club Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Among those to visit Anfield on Friday was former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who played alongside Jota for three seasons until 2023 and is now with Dutch club Ajax.

A visibly-tearful Henderson laid a wreath of flowers with a note reading: 'Rest in peace my friend, along with your brother Andre. We will all miss you. Love Hendo and family'.
Meanwhile, dignitaries including the Portuguese prime minister Luis Montenegro were among the mourners at the Sao Cosme Chapel in Gondomar on Friday afternoon for a private wake. A funeral is due to take place on Saturday, with a number of Liverpool players and staff expected to be in attendance.
The bodies of the two men were returned to Portugal from Spain on Thursday evening.

Report: Tragedy strikes Liverpool as Diogo Jota dies in Spanish road accident
Devastation at Anfield: Remembering Diogo Jota's Legacy After Tragic Loss Shockwaves Across Merseyside In what was meant to be a summer of joy and celebration, Liverpool Football Club is instead mourning the tragic death of Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car crash in north-west Spain just 11 days after his wedding. The 28-year-old Portuguese forward lost his life alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in what investigators believe may have been caused by a high-speed tyre blowout. Advertisement Fans, players, and football figures around the world have been united in grief following confirmation of the heartbreaking news. Liverpool described themselves as 'devastated' in a club statement and immediately offered support to Jota's family, including his wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three young children. Flags at Anfield were lowered to half-mast, while tributes poured in from Cristiano Ronaldo, Jurgen Klopp, Kenny Dalglish and many others. A Summer That Was Meant To Be Perfect Jota had only recently been celebrating what appeared to be the perfect summer: a Nations League triumph with Portugal, a fairytale wedding in Porto, and family moments captured on the Anfield pitch after Liverpool's 20th league title win. His wedding video, shared online with the words 'A day we will never forget,' has become tragically prophetic. Photo: IMAGO Advertisement Photos of the smiling couple, their wedding rings, and their three children celebrating together are now gut-wrenching symbols of a life cruelly cut short. Just weeks ago, his sons Denis and Duarte were taking turns lifting the Premier League trophy in front of the Kop. Now, the football world is left grappling with an unspeakable loss. Unanswered Questions Surround Crash According to an article from Daniel Taylor and Guillermo Rai of The Athletic, Jota had opted for a ferry journey to England due to recent surgery which made flying inadvisable. Tragically, he never made it past Benavente. The Lamborghini Huracan he was travelling in veered off the A-52 and burst into flames. Emergency services confirmed both Jota and his brother died at the scene. The road conditions in the area — dubbed 'empty Spain' — have already been questioned, with local ambulance drivers reportedly avoiding certain lanes due to poor surfaces. Local officials, however, have urged restraint until formal investigations conclude. Advertisement A Family Man and a Liverpool Favourite Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said it best: 'He was not a friend to two people, a friend to everyone… someone who made others feel good about themselves just by being with them.' Slot also described him as 'the essence of what a Liverpool player should be.' Jota was revered not only for his work ethic and goals but for his humility and warmth off the pitch. A doting father and devoted husband, he made time for fans and was loved by his teammates. His presence, on and off the field, will be deeply missed.

Struff stress but Carlitos maintains hat-trick charge
Carlos Alcaraz has survived a "stressful" afternoon, coping with a barrage of booming serves from veteran German powerhhouse Jan-Lennard Struff to take his unbeaten streak to 21 matches and keep his Wimbledon hat-trick ambitions on course. The Spanish champion knew all about the danger of the 35-year-old Struff, having been knocked out of the 2021 French Open by him when he was an emerging star and then also getting stretched by the towering German over five sets at the following year's Wimbledon. And the same old problems emerged again on Friday when, after Alcaraz had eased through the first set, Struff, who blasted down 13 aces in all, responded brilliantly to clinch the crucial break for 5-3 before levelling the match. A fourth consecutive 4R at #Wimbledon awaits Carlos Alcaraz 👏The defending champion defeats Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 🇪🇸 — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 4, 2025 But Alcaraz, who'd also had a serious workout from another veteran, Fabio Fognini, over five sets in the opening round, once again found another gear to prevail 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-4 in two hours and 25 minutes. "I knew it was going to be really difficult and I had to be focused on every shot," said the 22-year-old. "His game suits the grass, big serves, coming to the net, so I'm pleased with everything I did today. Proud to get the win in four sets. "To be honest I was suffering in every service game I did. Lots of break points down. It was stressful," added Alcaraz, who set up a last-16 date with 14th seed Andrey Rublev, who eased past veteran French leftie Adrian Mannarino 7-5 6-2 6-3. Taylor Fritz, who had already negotiated two marathon five-setters over three days to reach the third round, needed another three hours and 12 minutes to get past Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Yet though his workload has been massive and he's had issues with his knee, he reckons he's actually feeling stronger as each match goes by as he gets ready to face Australian Jordan Thompson, four-set victor over Luciano Darderi, in the last-16. It as the end of the road for Brazil's rising teenage star Joao Fonseca, who couldn't keep his legion of noisy fans happy after losing to the resurgent Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry, who secured a fourth-round meeting with Britain's Cameron Norrie after a 6-3 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-4) victory on a raucous No.2 Court. The home fans, fed up after the exit of their big men's hope Jack Draper on Thursday, still have Cameron Norrie, their 2022 semi-finalist, to cheer after the last British man standing beat Italy's Mattia Bellucci 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 6-3.

Texas surging with elite edge Jamarion Carlton after recent visit
Texas has picked a few huge commitments over the last week for their 2026 recruiting class as four-star defensive lineman Dylan Berymon and four-star defensive tackle Corey Wells made their pledges to the Longhorns. They have another blue-chipper in their sights as well and that's four-star edge Jamarion Carlton. The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder named Texas in his top five schools last week and also set a July 10 commitment date. Carlton was back in Austin last weekend to see the Longhorns, and he got to take in a bunch of what the program has to offer and what they have in store if he commits. Advertisement "This official visit was amazing," Carlton told Rivals earlier this week. "Just to be able to chill with the players, get some good advice and then being able to know what plan they have for me. At Texas, the plan to develop me into reaching my highest potential as a player and as a person was great. The time with the players and the coaches was pretty fun." Carlton had a productive junior season for Temple High School. He amassed 57 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, and a forced fumble. Rivals has Carlton ranked extremely high in their rankings. In addition to being the No. 46 overall prospect he's also the No. 4 edge rusher and the No. 4 recruit in the state of Texas. Texas Tech hosted Carlton at the end of April and LSU in May. He still has official visits to Texas A&M and Baylor before he commits, so last weekend was immensely important for Texas and their chances to land Carlton. Advertisement After spending time with players on the Longhorns roster as well as edge coach LaAllan Clark, Carlton can envision himself playing in Austin. "I can see myself there," Carlton said. If Texas can snag Carlton, they'll inch closer toward a top 10 class for the 2026 cycle.
