Aussie Molly Picklum goes wild after becoming new world No.1 with WSL title win in Brazil
Australian surfer Molly Picklum has shown why she's top of the women's World Surfing League standings, claiming her first win on tour this season in Saquarema, Brazil.
After beating Canadian Erin Brooks 13.06 to 7.60 earlier on Sunday (Monday AEST) in the second semi-final, Picklum took on local Luana Silva in the final of the Vivo Rio Pro, stop 9 of the competition.

Picklum opened with a 6.83 and followed it up with the highest single wave score of the event for the women, an 8.17. Her final total of 15.00 was also the highest of the event for the women at Praia de Itauna.
Silva's best two-wave score totalled 9.23, well short of being able to stop Picklum winning for the third time.
Picklum was chaired off after emerging from the water, letting out a huge yell in excitement of the achievement.
'She's (Silva) been surfing so well. I knew she's such a competitor and she's such a fighter,' said the 22-year-old from Gosford.
'I was pretty scared all the way till the end even though I had a couple of good scores. But yeah, she's capable of great things and I'm so happy to get that one over her.'
The WSL Tour's most consistent women's surfer in 2025 — reaching the quarter-finals in eight out of nine events, including three Finals - Picklum enjoys top spot with just two regular-season events remaining on the calendar.
'I've worked so hard this year to really put my best foot forward,' she added.
'I've dreamt so much of winning here in Rio, too. I'm a real energetic person, I love the Brazilian energy, and to get a win this year means so much for sure.
'Thank you so much and shout out to everyone back at home. I know you're all probably up watching and I felt all the love.'
In the men's draw, Aussie Ethan Ewing was beaten in the semis by American Griffin Colapinto, 14.84 to 14.20, after earlier downing defending champion and home hope Italo Ferreira (14.43-13.30) in the quarters.
Colapinto was then out-gunned 16.90 to 14.40 by compatriot Cole Houshmand in the decider, who went two-for-two in CT Finals, backing up his 2024 breakthrough win at Bells Beach with another victory.

Doors opening as Paro locks in title eliminator
Liam Paro is two wins away from reclaiming his IBF belt after securing a world title eliminator clash with unbeaten Mexican Lindolfo Delgado. The Mackay super lightweight (25-1) pulverised Jonathan Navarro in Cairns last week in a statement win almost three years since his last Australian appearance. It's understood venues in Townsville, Brisbane and Gold Coast have already been earmarked for the 29-year-old's next fight later this year. Victory against the 23-0 Mexican would leave Paro in the mandatory position to exact revenge on American star Richardson Hitchins, who dethroned him in December last year. But that may not be in Paro's immediate plans, with the Australian highly-regarded by the WBO and WBC. It comes as Paro extends what was a one-fight deal with Tim Tszyu's No Limit Boxing stable, who are dedicated to making the Queenslander a household name after years grafting overseas. "This is exactly what we promised Liam Paro when he came home, that he'd headline in Australia and be back on the path to a world title," No Limit boss George Rose said. "And now, here we are. The Australian public are going to love him." Liam Wilson, who fought and won on the same Cairns card, has also been ordered into an IBF junior lightweight eliminator against Kazakh Sultan Zaurbek. Reds bracing for new, exciting next-gen British Lions
A Queensland Reds side brimming with Wallabies hopefuls has a "point to prove" against a British & Irish Lions team that represents the next generation of northern hemisphere rugby. The up-tempo Lions ran over the top of the Western Force in a one-sided 54-7 opening to their Australian tour on Saturday. Coach Andy Farrell, with an eye to the first Test on July 19, has made 14 changes ahead of Wednesday's clash with the Reds in front of an expected 50,000 at Suncorp Stadium. Scottish flyhalf Finn Russell has retained his No.10 jersey though and will partner Irish scrumhalf Jamison Gibson-Park for the first time in a potentially devastating combination. Twelve years ago the Reds scored two tries to the Lions' one, but lost 22-12 as Owen Farrell kicked five penalty goals. "The game's changing up there," Reds assistant and former English Premiership backrower Jonathon Fisher said. "The days of kicking and chasing and hoping for good outcomes at the set piece, from a northern hemisphere (perspective), are very much a thing of the past." Fisher was playing at Northampton when rising English star Henry Pollock, who starred against the Force, was in their junior development program. "There's a generation of players and coaches who are forward-thinking, progressive in the way they attack and use the ball," Fisher said. "The quality of player, particularly these halves; the width and speed of pass, vision, appreciation of space. It's an exciting prospect." Ironically, 12 years after Quade Cooper pulled the strings for the free-wheeling Reds, it could be the hosts leaning on their scrum and rolling maul. But under Les Kiss, who coached with Fisher at London Irish before moving to Ballymore, the Reds have balanced that set piece strength with bold counter-attack and opportunistic support play. "We want to make it very clear to the world watching ... what Queensland rugby is," Fisher said. "Our set piece is strong; our scrum, our maul. "But in terms of slowing the game down, I don't think that's in our control. We won't be changing what we do." The Reds beat the Lions in 1899 (11-3) and 1971 (15-11), with the Brumbies in 2013 the next Australian provincial side - and first worldwide in 16 years - to taste victory against the tourists. Captain Jock Campbell, who skippered the Reds in a 36-35 loss to Wales a year ago, will lead a long list of Test hopefuls with "a point to prove". Hooker Matt Faessler and centre Hunter Paisami have been pulled from the Wallabies squad to play for the Reds while Seru Uru and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto are returning from injury and in the mix for the first Lions Test. Campbell, Josh Flook, Josh Canham and Aidan Ross, the former All Blacks prop who will become eligible to play for Australia next week, also have a platform. "It's a big opportunity to show on a world stage what they've got," Campbell, who has played four Tests, said. "I'd hope all the boys are looking to do that."
