Police scour Middelpos settlement after new information in Joshlin Smith case
Joshlin's mother, Racquel 'Kelly' Smith, Smith's boyfriend Jacquin 'Boeta' Appollis, 33, and Steveno van Rhyn, 28, received life sentences for the kidnapping and trafficking of Joshlin in May.
An eight-week trial revealed how the trio planned to sell the green-eyed grade 1 pupil with fair skin to a sangoma for R20,000 from their home in the settlement in February last year.
'SAPS teams led by detectives with K-9 members, search and rescue teams and local police have been scouring an identified area in Saldanha Bay. Whether the ongoing search will yield any success remains to be seen. It is worth reiterating that police have an obligation to follow up and test all information that is brought to their attention,' Western Cape police said on Saturday.
'A humble plea is hereby made that the search teams be afforded space to perform their duties as the investigation continues.'
Police said on Saturday, even though the three were sentenced for kidnapping and human trafficking, the disappearance without trace of the child remained a priority for police and the investigation was never closed.

Gcobani's judgment hinged on the fact that Jacobs was a first time offender and that she had minor children. He said the interest of Jacobs's children had to be taken into consideration as they were currently in the care of Jacobs's friend while her mother was in hospital. He added that Jacobs did not have a history of clashing with the law and that she would not evade her trial or influence witnesses or interfere with the case. He granted bail on strict conditions, including that she is not allowed to be in the Mitchells Plain or Strandfontein community, and is not to make contact with witnesses. "The release of an accused out on bail is not the question of guilt, that is for the trial to question," he said while quoting various case laws. He also summarised the testimony of Sergeant Dawid Fortuin of the Serious and Violent Crimes Kidnapping Unit, in which he emphasised that Jacobs had suffered an ectopic pregnancy and a miscarriage and delved into the State's reasons for bail not to be granted. He added that via her lawyer, Jacobs said he was the primary caregiver for her children and that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He said while he sympathised with the family, the State did not provide exceptional circumstances to not allow her bail. Inside court, Imaan Sharmar wept and was too emotional to speak with the media. She had to be led away by relatives. State prosecutor, Salaahuddeen Simon, said the State was still awaiting the return of vital evidence and asked for a postponement until October 15 for further investigation. Jacobs's family said they were happy she was released, but did not comment further. Outside court, Veranique "Benji" Williams of Faith and Hope Missing persons organisation, said: "What message is the courts sending out that everyone can kidnap a baby? 12 pupils injured after 'drunk' scholar transport driver crashes in Randburg
Twelve schoolchildren were injured when a Toyota Quantum scholar transport minibus crashed in Montgomery Park, Randburg, on Monday morning after the driver allegedly lost control while overtaking another vehicle. According to Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Supt Xolani Fihla, the scholar transport diver was driving while under the influence of alcohol. 'He has been arrested and will be detained at Sophiatown SAPS. He faces charges of reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol,' said Fihla No further details such as the condition of the injured pupils have yet been released. Activists demand justice as Tiffany Meek faces bail hearing for son's murder

Image: Timothy Bernard / Independent Newspapers Despite Tiffany Meek's defence lawyer, Noven Naidoo, arguing strongly for the release of his client on bail, as she is not a flight risk, community activists have pleaded with the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court to deny Meek bail. On Monday, the 31-year-old mother accused of the murder of her 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek returned to court, where the matter was postponed to Tuesday for the final bail judgment. Meek has requested that she be granted R5,000 bail as she believes she is innocent and is being framed for the gruesome May 13 murder. Her lawyer has argued that no evidence has been presented to the court suggesting that his client could be a flight risk. "The learned Magistrate, in her wisdom, should realise that with all the public outcry, there is no evidence that Mr Mnisi was harmed by the public. While the public is indeed angry with the applicant, why would they resort to murder? Kill the applicant and risk being also charged with murder. Everybody wants justice for Jayden-Lee, but that can only be achieved through a proper investigation and with the trial court making a determination on the matter. "In conclusion, there is no evidence before this court to even suggest that the applicant is a flight risk. In the absence of such evidence, it is submitted that the accused be released on bail as the accused has discharged the onus as a suitable candidate for bail," Naidoo stated. On Monday, the State prosecutor argued that Meek does not have a reliable address as she intends to relocate to another province, which will make things difficult for the State to take control of the case. "If the applicant is released and goes to stay with her father, she will not have a stable address. Two, your worship, it is evident that the accused will continue to be employed, and she is not required to be in the office. She can work remotely. That means she can work from anywhere, and she will continue to have financial resources. "What I mean is that the applicant could be a flight risk. She is in another province. So we are asking someone somewhere in another police station who has no interest in this matter to keep tabs on her," the State prosecutor told the court. Speaking outside court, City of Joburg Speaker of Council, Margaret Arnolds, said she is not convinced of Meek's innocence, adding that the court should consider the severity of the charges against the 31-year-old. "I believe the defence lawyer and the accused are grasping at straws. I am very impressed by how the State prosecutor has summed up things with the conflicting times the accused has given, irrespective of what time the child was found. It is nail-biting, we do not know where all of this will lead because in the Likhona Fose and Mnisi case, this led to the suspect being released on bail... We hope that the magistrate will deliver a sober judgment tomorrow," she said. Cheryl Pillay, a community activist from Eldorado Park, said it was important for justice to prevail in cases involving children and the most vulnerable in society. "We are here because we have had so many court cases involving children. As activists, it is our responsibility to stand up and be the voices for the voiceless. Jayden-Lee deserves justice, and both sides, the State and the defence, presented their cases. We leave the decision in the hands of the court. Obviously, as communities, we want to see justice being served, especially in the interest of the most vulnerable and children," she said.
