IND vs ENG 2025: 'You win by ...' - Ajinkya Rahane urges India to change XI for Manchester must-win Test
NEW DELHI: With India trailing 1-2 in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, veteran batter
Ajinkya Rahane
has issued a stirring call to the team management ahead of the crucial fourth Test in Manchester: "You're going to win a Test match or a Test series by getting 20 wickets."

Rahane's comments come after India's narrow 22-run loss at Lord's, despite packing their XI with all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Kumar Reddy - all of whom made useful contributions. The strategy, rooted in head coach
Gautam Gambhir
's preference for batting depth, has yielded mixed results in the longer format.
Poll
Should India consider adding an extra bowler for the upcoming Test match?
Yes, it's crucial for victory
No, the current strategy works
Only if the pitch demands it
Undecided
'We all know that Day 4 and 5 get slightly difficult to bat on.
It's not easy to score runs,' Rahane explained on his YouTube channel. 'Yes, England bowled really well. But I felt India missed an opportunity to get that big score on the board in the first innings. Also, going forward, India should look to add one extra bowler - because you're going to win a Test match or a Test series by getting 20 wickets.'

India's selection dilemma is now sharper than ever. With the batting-heavy strategy not delivering wins, Rahane's call to bolster the bowling attack presents a critical decision point for captain Shubman Gill and Gambhir.

Rahane also praised
Ben Stokes
for a pivotal fielding moment that turned the tide at Lord's. 'It's very easy for the fielder to get relaxed when you see only two or three balls left before lunch. But his attitude towards the ball, his intensity, and getting that run-out - that's where I felt England came into the game.'
At the time, India were 40 for 1 and cruising, but the run-out followed by Karun Nair's LBW dismissal shifted momentum.
'That was a turning point,' Rahane noted. 'England's bowling tightened up, their fielding intensity increased, and they showed great character.'
After Lord's heartbreak, Team India start training for Manchester, in London!
Despite a strong fightback from India later, Rahane admitted they were '75–100 runs short' in the first innings. He singled out KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant's partnership as a highlight, but emphasised that without taking 20 wickets, victories will remain elusive.

Olympian Pahal set to return from injury at Indian Open Athletics in Patna
Kiran Pahal will be one of the major attractions at Indian Open Athletics meet to be held at Patliputra Sports Complex in Kanker Bagh, Patna, on Saturday. Pahal, who competed at Paris Olympics and currently holds second-best timing by an Indian woman in 400m, will be making a comeback from injury and running for the first time since Paris Games. Speaking ahead of the event, Pahal, a resident of Rohtak, Haryana, said, "After coming back from Paris, as I started training following a break, I felt a pain in my knee. At first I thought it would go away but once I did an MRI in March, I was told I had a third grade meniscus tear. Naturally it's going to be challenging for the 24-year-old but Pahal said she will be looking to give her best. Her PB at the moment is 50.92 seconds which she achieved during Indian Championships at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula last year that helped her make it to the Olympics. It's only slower than Hima Das's NR of 50.79 seconds that she had achieved at 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. Besides Pahal, another big name to compete at the meet will be Odisha's Srabani Nanda, who was part of the 4x100m relay team that won silver at Asian Athletics early this year and will be competing in the 100m. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo It was her first international meet after almost three years, having last competed in 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
