No end to Ajit vs Sena tussle

Hindustan Times05-05-2025
The tussle between deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena seems to be unending. It has once again come out in the open following social justice minister and Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat's objection to the diversion of ₹410 crore earmarked for his department for disbursement to beneficiaries under the Ladki Bahin scheme. An irked Pawar on Sunday lobbed the ball in chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's court, saying it was a cabinet decision and that the latter would speak on the issue.
For the past several weeks, Sena ministers have been complaining in private against the finance department led by Ajit Pawar, saying their files are getting stuck or a lot of queries are raised before clearing them. Finance officials say this is a normal procedure although they are compelled to be stricter about spending considering the state's cash crunch.
It's not just Sena ministers or MLAs, even deputy CM Shinde himself is not very happy with the finance department. A senior Sena minister said they think their proposals or files are put under the microscope more as compared to their colleagues from the two other parties. Significantly, among the decisions that are being relooked at is the previous Shinde government's decision to give ₹26,300 crore contracts for construction of Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor. It had been decided to build the corridor through Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Now questions are being raised over the contracts, which were allegedly given at 30% higher price than the expected cost. It has been suggested that the contracts be scrapped and the construction be done through the build, operate, transfer (BOT) model so that the state government need not bear the entire cost. Incidentally, the MSRDC is headed by Shinde. Officials say the finance department's opinion will be important in this decision. Looks like the Ajitdada-Sena saga that started in the MVA government will continue in the third government too.
That elusive CM's chair
Ajit Pawar once again publicly lamented that he has still not been able to ascend the chief minister's chair. 'For several years, I have been feeling that I should also be chief minister but that has not happened yet,'Ajitdada said in a lighter vein at a function organised by his party to felicitate the past chief ministers of Maharashtra. Referring to remarks by one of the speakers that the state should get its first woman chief minister, Pawar said even he wants to be chief minister and added that he was still hopeful. The maximum applause was reserved for chief minister Fadnavis who insisted that this is his third term in office. 'I do count that 72-hour tenure in which Ajitdada was my deputy. It was during that tenure that the foundation of the current government was built,' he remarked, amid roars of laughter.
Summer sojourn? No, study tour
Three Mahayuti ministers are travelling to Italy to participate in Macfrut 2025, an exhibition organised at Rimini in Italy. It is an international trade fair on fruits and vegetables processing, technology and marketing. Agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate, marketing minister Jaykumar Rawal and minister of state for agriculture Ashish Jaiswal are touring Italy from May 4 to 9 'to understand trends in global market and find opportunities for state's agricultural produce at international level and also study the new technology and processes,' according to a GR issued by the government.
The expenditure for the trip would be borne by Balasaheb Thackeray Agricultural Business and Rural Transformation project of the state government which was launched to transform the agriculture sector and livelihoods in the state and assisted by the World Bank.
A pleasant Italian escape from the scorching summer may just be a coincidence.
Fadnavis finally enters Varsha
Four months after he took over as chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis shifted his residence to Varsha, the official bungalow of the CM. There have been speculations why Fadnavis was not shifting from Sagar bungalow in the same area that had been his residence after he took over as opposition leader following the failed experiment to form government with Ajit Pawar in 2019. He continued to stay at Sagar even as he became deputy chief minister in 2023. Officials said there was some necessary renovation at Varsha and he shifted on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya on April 30. In the corridors of Mantralaya, there are several superstitions about which offices and bungalows are considered 'lucky' or 'unlucky'. Sagar bungalow is now being regarded as a lucky one since for the second time, its occupant has become the chief minister. Earlier, Ashok Chavan, who was residing at Sagar during his tenure as a minister in Vilasrao Deshmukh led government, was elevated as CM in 2008 following 26/11 terror attack when Deshmukh stepped down.

Linguistic hatred will harm Maharashtra, affect investments: Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan

Amid the ongoing controversy over the Marathi language, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan advised staying away from spreading 'linguistic hatred', as it would affect the industry and investments in the State. While speaking at the coffee table book launch on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mr. Radhakrishnan on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) said, 'Can I speak in Marathi immediately after being slapped. Such hatred, in the long run, will harm the State.' Mr. Radhakrishnan narrated an incident reflecting on the linguistic hatred and said, 'When I was an MP in Tamil Nadu, I saw a group beating up another over not speaking Tamil. On inquiring, I learnt that the victim was a north Indian and miscreants wanted him to speak Tamil. Mr. Radhkrishnan, reflecting on his own struggle with Hindi, suggested to learn multiple languages while being 'proud of our own'. Minister Girish Mahajan also reiterated his sentiments and said, 'We should be proud of the Marathi language, but to enforce on others, especially violently, is not right.' He also highlighted the Maharashtrians, including those who travel outside Maharashtra. So, we need to have mutual respect across linguistic lines. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray responded to the governor's remarks, saying, no need to make political comments as there is no linguistic hatred in the State.

Wrong to give political colour to birthday wishes of Pawar, Thackeray: Fadnavis

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday urged not to attach political motives to birthday greetings, including those extended by his political rivals. Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis speaks during a ceremony held in Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai's honour by the Maharashtra legislature, at Vidhan Bhavan, in Mumbai, Tuesday, July 8, 2025. (PTI Photo/Kunal Patil)(PTI07_08_2025_000236B) (PTI) Speaking to reporters after offering prayers at the Vitthal Temple in Pandharpur, Fadnavis said, 'We may differ ideologically, but we are not enemies. It is inappropriate to read politics into greetings exchanged on personal or festive occasions. Doing so distorts the cultural values of the state.' His remarks came a day after the release of a coffee table book commemorating his birthday, which featured congratulatory messages from Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray. 'Some well-wishers compiled a book for my birthday and sought messages from various leaders. Both Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray offered kind words and good wishes. I appreciate that. But trying to politicise it would be narrow-minded,' he said. State minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule also reacted to Thackeray's praise for Fadnavis, stating that it reflects Maharashtra's cultural tradition of appreciating an individual's good work on their birthday. 'It is part of Maharashtra's tradition to commend the achievements of an individual on their birthday. Uddhavji has appreciated Devendra Fadnavis's work, his vision, and particularly the roadmap he has outlined for a developed Maharashtra by 2029. This vision has received a significant boost, and Uddhav Thackeray's praise is extremely significant, not just for state politics but for all political parties,' Bawankule said. Fadnavis spoke on the occasion of the 675th death anniversary of Saint Namdeo, calling the lives of saints a source of lasting inspiration. When asked about recent remarks by Governor CP Radhakrishnan related to the Marathi-Hindi language debate, the chief minister said it would be inappropriate to involve the governor in political matters. He declined to comment on calls for agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate's resignation after the latter was allegedly seen playing online rummy during a legislative council session. 'I am here for darshan,' he said. Fadnavis noted that he was open to discussing the Pandharpur corridor development project with local residents. The proposed plan includes road widening, relocation of shops, and better facilities for pilgrims visiting the Vitthal-Rukmini Temple.

'Apologise To Raj Thackeray': MNS Workers Assault Man For Not Speaking Marathi

Mumbai: Another man has been beaten up in Maharashtra by MNS workers for not speaking in Marathi and saying, "I will not speak in the language. What will you do?". A video which has gone viral shows a man confronting a worker at a public toilet in a bus stop in Nanded, alleging that women were being charged Rs 5 to use the facilities. As he begins shooting the video, the man asks the worker what his name is and the worker refuses to divulge it, asking whether the man thinks of himself as some big shot. The man tells the worker he will complain and is asked, in Hindi, to leave. This prompts the man to ask the worker to talk in Marathi and he replies, "What will you do if I don't? What will you do? Go." A woman next to the man also argues with the worker and the man shooting the video says he will show the worker what he can do. In another video, the man walks up to what appears to be the ticket office at the bus stop and asks the employees whether using the public toilet is not free for women. When the employees say it is, the man says he will show the video to (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) chief Raj Thackeray's people. "Whether it is free or not, whether he should speak in Marathi or not, the man will know tomorrow. He's charging Rs 5 from women," the man says. Assault The next video, from the day after, shows the worker surrounded in the public toilet by a few men, one of whom appears to punch him in the face. As another man tries to intervene and stop them, the men slap the worker three times, asking, "You are abusing women? Will you speak in Marathi or not? Do you know Marathi?" "You don't know Marathi? If you had said you don't know the language and that you were learning, would we be here?" one of the men says. As the worker falls at the man's feet and apologises, he is taken out of the toilet. The men, now wearing scarves with the MNS symbol and name, make the worker hold his ears and repeat after them in Marathi: "I apologise to the Marathi people and Raj Thackeray. I will not make such a mistake again." "You will learn Marathi, right? Learn it quickly," the worker is told by one of the men. Flare-Up The Marathi issue, amid protests by the MNS and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) over what they called "Hindi imposition" in Maharashtra in the guise of implementation of the three-language policy in the state, had flared up earlier this month when a shopkeeper was slapped multiple times by MNS workers in Thane for asking them why speaking in Marathi should be compulsory. A shopkeeper was also assaulted in Vikhroi a few days later. In a post on X last week, Raj Thackeray said he is proud of his "soldiers" for giving people a "befitting response", which stems from their "love" of the language. "When someone tries to drive a nail into the throat of the Marathi people, I feel proud that my soldiers of Maharashtra slap that person, not out of personal jealousy, rather for my language and my Marathi people," he wrote. Several others, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, have condemned the attacks and said resorting to violence over people not speaking Marathi is unacceptable.
