'I saw hotel terror attack aftermath firsthand - bravery shone amid bloodshed'

Daily Mirror4 days ago

The sunbeds were still spattered with blood on Sousse beach when we arrived to witness the aftermath of the attack. There were paperbacks strewn across the sand where victims fell as a Jihadist gunman pulled out his Kalashnikov.
Extremist Seifeddine Rezgui, a 22-year-old electrical engineering student, had massacred 38 tourists 10 years ago today in an attack on a beach outside the five-star Riu Imperial Marhaba hotel complex. Sunglasses and sun cream had been left among the personal belongings dropped by tourists fleeing for their lives. Amid the carnage, there was extraordinary bravery. Eyewitnesses told how hotel staff and sunbathers formed a 'human shield' around Brits and foreign tourists in a desperate bid to save them.
A bar manager at the Belle Vue hotel, next door to the Imperial Marhaba, told how ordinary Tunisian people had tried to save people in the line of fire. The man, who would give his name only as Houssem, added: 'I was shouting at people 'run, run'. The gunman was laughing as he was shooting, when he had finished and he had killed everyone, he did not care, he did not try to run.
'He threw a mobile phone into the sea, he took it apart, then he came up here step by step and he was smiling, he was happy about what he wanted to do. Everyone was scared, but we did everything we could to stop him.'
Brit John Yeoman, from Kettering, posted a photo of Belle Vue staff forming a human shield. He said: "Staff were in a line and they were shouting at him, saying 'we won't let you through'. They shouted: 'You'll have to go through us'. That's why he's got his back turned to them. He tried to get to my hotel and they stood up to him."
Young and old, parents and grandparents, a beautician, a nurse, a council worker were all slain by the laughing gunman. Yet Rezgui's family claimed he was a football-loving, typical teenager before he was radicalised on-line by IS, and groomed for murder.
His uncle revealed: "We didn't know where he was going, and there were no goodbyes. The entire family is shocked at the hidden reality of what he was capable of."
But the killer posted before the massacre: "If love of jihad is a crime the whole world can witness that I am a criminal."

Holidaymakers warned over Booking.com holiday scam that could lose you THOUSANDS

Tourists have been urged to be on their guard for a scam that preys on users – that could see them lose thousands. With the school holidays just around the corner, many Brits will have booked a summer getaway. But experts have warned that scammers using the platform are targeting holidaymakers by sending false messages and emails from hotel accounts. As the messages look legitimate and appear to have come through many tourists are then tricked in to sending payments to the scammers. Action Fraud says it received 532 reports of the scam between June 2023 and September 2024 from individuals who had lost a total of £370,000. The fraud centre thinks that scammers are taking over hotel accounts and then sending messages to unsuspecting consumers via WhatsApp, email and through the app. The messages falsely inform the holidaymaker that their card has been declined or that their payment details need to be verified. The scammers then ask holidaymakers to enter their banking details via a false link which is used to steal money. When customers access the webpage, they are encouraged to 'accept' cookies to view the page. Once they do so, malicious files are downloaded to their computer Another scam uses bogus websites. Victims are sent a fake link over email. When customers access the webpage, they are encouraged to 'accept' cookies to view the page. Once they do so, malicious files are downloaded to their computer. Adam Mercer, deputy head of Action Fraud, says: 'With more than 500 reports made to Action Fraud, those who have booked a holiday on the platform should stay alert to any unexpected emails or messages from a hotel using the platform, as their account could have been taken over by a criminal. 'If you receive an unexpected request from a hotel's account you booked with using asking for bank details or credit card details, it could be a fraudster trying to trick you into parting ways with your money.' Action Fraud recommends contacting or your hotel directly if you have concerns about a message you've received. told MailOnline: 'Unfortunately, there is an increasing number of online scams targeting many businesses operating in the e-commerce space. 'With the rise of AI, cybercriminals are able to create increasingly sophisticated scams. Thankfully, with our continual investment in cybersecurity technology, actual incidents on our platform are rare.' tips to avoid scams Protect personal information: Never share sensitive details such as credit card numbers via email, text, chat, or phone. Stay vigilant: If a payment request seems suspicious, always double-check the property's payment policies listed on the booking page or in your confirmation email. If there is no pre-payment policy or deposit requirement outlined, but you're asked to pay in advance to secure your booking, it is likely a scam. When in doubt, contact our 24/7 Customer Service team for support. Avoid suspicious links: Scam messages often include urgent language and may contain spelling or grammar errors. Familiarising yourself with common cybercriminal tactics can help you spot potential threats. Verify directly: When unsure about the legitimacy of a message, contact the property provider or our customer support directly. Enable two-factor authentication: As an additional security measure to protect your account. For additional tips and resources on staying safe online, visit the Safety Resource Centre.

'Talented' Brit pilot, 24, found dead at US Navy base with shotgun wound

British pilot Costas Georgellis, 24, was tragically found dead at a US Navy base in Texas - as his family and friends have paid emotional tributes following his death A "talented" pilot who was discovered dead at a US Navy suffered a fatal shotgun wound to his head, an inquest has heard. Brit Costas Georgellis, 24, was learning to be a fighter pilot at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in Texas, before he died on April 29. Assistant coroner for West London Richard Furniss believes his death has the 'hallmarks of suicide'. Tributes have since flooded in for the Loughborough University graduate, who has been described as "one in a million" by his friends. His loved ones paid their respects at his funeral which was given full military honours in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. His mother and father said his 'infectious laugh and kind heart made the world a better place'. The tribute, which was posted online, said: 'He lived an amazing life, full of adventure, always pursuing his dreams with determination and bravery. "He will never be forgotten. We invite all of those whose life he touched to share their memories and photos below for family and friends to cherish.' His university hockey team paid tribute on social media and said he was a "cherished part of our club", reports The Sun. They said: 'We are heartbroken to share the news of the passing of our former teammate, committee member and friend, Costas Georgellis. Costas was a cherished part of our club, known for his kindness, welcoming spirit and of course his backhand hit through his legs.' His close pal Morgan said: "Costas very quickly became a very close friend of mine at university after he came back from his placement at QinetiQ and we began sharing classes. I have countless great memories with him, from being in his first flight after achieving his pilot's license, watching the spitfire take off beside us, to standing out in the pouring rain at the international air tattoo with the F-22s roaring past and shaking us to our core." He added: "He had a way of creating this relaxed, carefree energy that I'm not sure I'll ever find again. It is rare that you find anyone without a bad bone in their body; someone who you knew without a doubt would always have your back no matter what. "Costas was that person. A great friend, a talented man, and someone who I will always miss not being in my corner." The inquest was adjourned until the US authorities send further documents and records.
