Doon activists oppose Rispana-Bindal road project

Time of India22-06-2025
Dehradun: Various social, women's and environmental organisations in Dehradun announced a public campaign on Sunday to demand pro-people development projects for the city while opposing the proposed Rispana-Bindal elevated road corridor.
According to activists, such projects disproportionately affect marginalised communities and harm the environment.
"Safeguarding the environment, providing relief from traffic congestion and protecting the interests of daily wage earners must be the priorities. We will intensify public agitation in the coming weeks. This project threatens both the environment and the community, and it will not alleviate traffic congestion as claimed," said Dr Ravi Chopra from the Uttarakhand Insaniyat Manch.
Other activists questioned the economic rationale behind the initiative. "If the govt can spend Rs 6,200 crore in Dehradun, the public can certainly help define a target for people-centric development that truly addresses the city's core issues," said social activist Anoop Nautiyal.
The proposed 26 km project, activists said, may benefit private companies and govt officers, but it threatens the settlements and housing rights of labourers. To raise awareness, activists announced plans for signature campaigns, public meetings and citywide protests in the coming weeks.

Belur criticises MP over Sigandur bridge inauguration row

Shivamogga: A day after the launch of India's second-longest cable-stayed bridge at Sagar in Shivamogga, Sagar MLA Belur Gopal Krishna criticised Shivamogga MP BY Raghavendra. He accused him of having a "fox mentality" and deliberately scheduling the event hastily to exclude state govt representatives. He urged CM Siddaramaiah to take disciplinary action against govt officials who attended the Sigandur bridge inauguration on Monday, despite the CM's instructions. The 2.44 km-long cable bridge, built at a cost of Rs 473 crore, was opened to traffic by the Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday amidst political rumblings over protocol lapse. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the Congress MLA attacked Raghavendra, who is a MP and son of former CM BS Yeddiyurappa and brother of BY Vijayendra, state BJP chief. Velur noted that the BJP's late invitation to the CM, merely five days before the event, suggested a deliberate attempt to prevent the CM's attendance. He clarified that while Congress supports regional development, they questioned the breach of the CM's protocol, explaining their absence from the event. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2021 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo However, Raghavendra expressed his discontent with Congress functionaries. Action to be taken against debris dumping and slum expansion in Mahim creek and Ganpat Patil Nagar in Mumbai, says minister

Mumbai: Over the next three days, action will be taken against debris dumping in the Mahim creek and Ganpat Patil Nagar, Dahisar, said revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule in the legislative council on Tuesday. The issue of debris dumping in the mangroves at Ganpat Patil Nagar and the expansion of slums was raised through a supplementary question by BJP MLC Pravin Darekar, who demanded an investigation into the expansion of slums near the creeks. In reply, Bawankule said the revenue department has begun mapping all areas along creeks, and action was already taken in a dozen places. "A task force is being set up, and only tolerated structures up to 2011 and those built under the PM Awaas Yojana will not be touched, while all others will be removed. Earlier, action would be taken either by the revenue department or the police department. They did not act in consonance. Now we have made a policy that action will be taken jointly by the revenue as well as the police departments. Revenue will impose a penalty, and the case will be registered by the police," said Bawankule. Rs 7500 crore drones, intelligence and Jihad: Pakistan and this Muslim country planning big conspiracy against India, trying to… New Delhi: The world has witnessed the bonding between Turkey and Pakistan during the recent India-Pak conflict, and it is no longer a secret that Ankara is helping Islamabad with military equipment. Now, the growing military cooperation between the two Muslim countries has become a matter of concern for New Delhi. Adding to the tension, Turkey and Pakistan have recently signed a fresh strategic agreement through which both countries will increase mutual cooperation in the defence sector, share intelligence, and strengthen security preparations. According to several media reports, the agreement has been made as a strategic step against India. It is being claimed that Turkey and Pakistan are planning to launch a 'jihad' against India together. According to a report by News18, quoting a senior military official, Islamabad is going to buy new spy drones from Turkish companies which worth about USD900 million (approx Rs 7,500 crore). It will also acquire over 700 loitering munitions (drone-bombs that attack by finding them themselves). Not only that the armies of both the countries are also going to share intelligence with each other in order to strengthen their capabilities. Trade worth USD5 billion will also be increased between both the countries. What Was Decided In Islamabad? Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Defence Minister Yasar Guler visited Islamabad recently and held a high-level meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Army Chief Asim Munir. ISI chief and other national security officials were also part of the crucial meeting. During the meeting, it was decided that Pak will purchase Turkish-made drones – Bayraktar TB2, Akinci UAVs and loitering weapons under a USD900 million deal. Both countries will also share intelligence and security cooperation, targeting India, News18 report said. Is It A Strategic Warning For India? This growing relationship between Pak and Turkey is causing serious concern in New Delhi. During 'Operation Sindoor' in May, Pakistan launched hundreds of Made in Turkey drones that included – Bayraktar TB2, YIHA-III, and Songar models. But India's air defence systems successfully shot them down. This also raised serious questions about the capabilities of Turkish drones. Why Should India Be Worried? Turkey's drones are strengthening Pakistan's surveillance on the international border, while advanced weapons are improving its strike capability. Due to this, India is facing dual threat – first is a better-armed Pakistan, and second is deepening cooperation between Ankara and Islamabad.
