Special census reveals 2,500 more people in Urbana than originally counted
City officials said the 2020 Census undercounted Urbana's population by almost seven percent due to students leaving campus because of COVID-19. But this past fall, the city was recounted through a special census.
Those results showed an additional 2,500 residents in Urbana.
The city estimated this will create about $600,000 in extra funds through state income tax and motor fuel tax shares. Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin said the extra money will go into the city's general fund and transportation projects.

'We've recovered some of the funding that we had been receiving before, and it will be extremely important, particularly in light of how uncertain some of our federal funding is these days,' Marlin said.
Marlin said that funding implications aside, the city will also have updated demographic information. This will allow the city to better plan programs and services for the community.
