Delhi HC directs Udaipur Files screening for petitioners
Delhi high court
on Wednesday directed the producer of 'Udaipur Files', a movie based on tailor Kanhaiya Lal murder case, to arrange a screening of the film for those opposed to its release.
The HC's direction came after the
Central Board of Film Certification
(CBFC) and the makers of the movie claimed that "objectionable" portions had been removed from the film, and there was no ground to stall its release.
The petitions claimed that the movie had the potential to inflame communal tensions and disrupt public order in the country.
A division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Anish Dayal directed the producers to arrange the screening on Wednesday itself for senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the petitioners, including Maulana Arshad Madani, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president and principal of Darul Uloom, Deoband.
The bench asked the petitioners to view the censored version and come back to the court on Thursday.
Earlier, Sibal argued that while free speech is protected, "the film's intent appears to fuel communal disharmony". ASG Chetan Sharma, appearing for I&B ministry and CBFC, responded that the censor board had already removed the flagged content. Sibal, however, maintained that the movie's "overall tone remains problematic", and the entire purpose appeared to be to target an entire community.

The petitioners said while Lal was murdered by two fanatics, the movie's trailer, released on June 26, "falsely" showed the crime being carried out with the complicity of religious heads/leaders of the community.
The producer informed the court that the trailer had been removed, but Sibal responded that the damage was already done.
The petitioners also claimed that the film violated constitutional morality by weaponising the freedom of expression to weaken the constitutional vision of a plural, inclusive and secular India, and instead attempted to mainstream narratives that would deepen social and religious divisions.
Lal was beheaded in his shop in June 2022 by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous -- who recorded the act and circulated the clip - allegedly for his post supporting former BJP leader Nupur Sharma over her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammed.

Fresh raids in Jharsuguda District: Over 400 migrant workers detained in Odisha, Bengal seeks their release
With the West Bengal government seeking immediate release of over 400 people detained in Jharsuguda, Odisha, on suspicion of being illegal Bangladesh migrants, Odisha Police on Wednesday said the verification process is going on and those submitting the required valid documents, will be released. The West Bengal government has said the detained people hail from various districts of West Bengal, including Nadia, Murshidabad, Malda, and Purba Medinipur. A fresh round of raids in Jharsuguda on Monday led to the detention of over 200 people. So far, 444 people have been detained and kept at two holding centres in the district on suspicion of being 'illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. 'The verification process is being conducted meticulously by senior officials via a joint investigation team, with multiple layers of scrutiny to ensure that no Indian citizen is wrongfully detained or harassed. Every effort is made to uphold the rights of Indian citizens while maintaining the integrity of the process… Those who are producing valid documents are being allowed to return to their place of stay,' Inspector General (Northern Range) Himanshu Lal told The Indian Express over the phone from Sambalpur. Defending the detention of people, the senior officer said the individuals lacked valid documentation to establish their residency or citizenship, necessitating a thorough verification process to ascertain their identity. 'This procedure is not about targeting any community or region but about upholding the rule of law and ensuring the security of our nation,' Lal said, adding 'the exercise is to safeguard the national interest and security, which can't be compromised'. According to the Odisha Police, the detained people are being held in 'designated facilities with access to adequate food, water, hygiene and medical care, and in line with humanitarian standards'. The BJP government in Odisha has also asked all districts to identify holding centres to detect, identify, and deport those who are unable to show proof of citizenship. Meanwhile, sources in the West Bengal government said that in Jharsuguda, police conducted raids in the wee hours of July 7 in colonies and settlements where Bengali migrant workers live. 'The police came and took them away. Many got detained. They were taken to the local police station. Despite providing documents such as proof of residence in West Bengal, the police did not budge and sent them to detention centres,' said Kabir Sheikh, who lives in the migrant colony in Jharsuguda and sells plastic goods. Sheikh, who hails from Murshidabad, said he was lucky as he was outside the colony during the detention drive. Families of 13 migrant labourers from Birbhum detained in Odisha submitted residential documents with the local police station, seeking their release. 'We just want them to be back soon. They have been working for years outside the state. This has never happened,' said Hajimuddin Sheikh, a resident of Kutulpur village in Birbhum. Last week, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant wrote a letter to his Odisha counterpart over the detention of Bengali-speaking migrant workers, saying it was 'deeply distressing'. Seeking a stop on harassment faced by people from Bengal, he wrote: 'What is even more concerning is that, even when these persons produce valid identity documents… In many instances, they are being asked to produce ancestral land records dating back several generations, an unreasonable and unjustifiable demand for migrant workers,' he had added. This comes close on the heels of similar detentions made in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh – all BJP-ruled states.

'I couldn't speak. I froze': Indian origin priest accused of molesting beauty queen in Malaysia; police launch manhunt
Lishalliny Kanaran (Image credits: @HypeMY) Malaysian beauty queen and actor Lishalliny Kanaran, winner of Miss Grand Malaysia 2021, has accused an Indian priest of molesting her during a recent visit to a Hindu temple. The allegation surfaced after Kanaran shared a detailed account of the incident on Instagram two days ago, sparking public outrage and calls for immediate action. Lishalliny said she visited the Mariamman Temple in Sepang alone on June 21, as her mother was in India. Being unfamiliar with temple rituals, she usually relied on the priest for guidance. During the visit, the priest told her he had some holy water and a protective string for her. After she completed her prayers, she waited for about 90 minutes before the priest asked her to follow him to his private office for the blessing. Inside the office, the priest poured a strong-smelling liquid, described by Lishalliny as rose or flower essence, into the holy water and told her it was brought from India and not given to ordinary people. He then began splashing the water on her, so much that she couldn't open her eyes. The situation escalated when the priest allegedly asked Kanaran to lift her Punjabi suit. When she declined, explaining that it was too tight, he reportedly scolded her for wearing such attire. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like So sánh mức trượt giá: Hợp đồng tương lai (CFD) Bitcoin vs Ethereum IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo He then stood behind her, held her head, and began murmuring what she believed were prayers—before allegedly putting his hands inside her blouse and bra. 'My brain knew everything about that moment was wrong and yet I couldn't move. I couldn't speak. I froze. And I still don't understand why,' she said. Kanaran said she spent the following days feeling disgusted and deeply traumatised. After her mother returned from India, she confided in her. Shocked and enraged, her mother informed the rest of the family, and they filed a police complaint on July 4. When they returned to the temple, they found the priest had already fled. 'Apparently, the priest wasn't there anymore. Someone had already reported him before for the same thing and yet no action had been taken,' Kanaran said, accusing the temple management of prioritising its reputation over helping victims. The actress's detailed social media post has sparked outrage, with calls for the suspect to be swiftly apprehended. Police have not yet located the priest but confirmed that efforts to track him down are underway. Sepang district police chief ACP Norhizam Bahaman, speaking to Malay Mail, said, 'The suspect is an Indian national who was temporarily filling the position because the temple's resident priest is currently abroad.' 'The suspect's modus operandi was allegedly to sprinkle holy water on the victim's face and body before proceeding to molest her,' he added.
