Vijay & I are living the dream our father left his village to chase: Anand Deverakonda

"The other day, while we were out, someone came up to my dad and marvelled at how much I resemble him. I guess I've begun to resemble him more now. I suppose it's only natural — my father is fundamental to everything we are as a family.
'
'It all began with his dream'
But life had other plans. He got married at 25 or 26, and not long after, my parents had
Vijay.
With a family to support, he had to make choices. He became a director because he had responsibilities to meet. Back then, entertainment didn't pay well. There were only two TV channels — Doordarshan and DD2. It was a tough life. Humble. Modest. Living from pay cheque to pay cheque, and often not knowing when the next one would come.
But no matter how tight things got, he never let us feel the weight of it.
'He was the first to see the actor in Vijay'
He introduced us to the magic of cinema. Back then in the 2000s it was the era of renting DVDs. He'd show us different kinds of cinema. Me and Vijay studied at hostel in Puttaparthi. We lived in Vanasthalipuram and during summer vacations, we'd come home and frequented Shiv Ganga, Konark, Megha and Raghavendra theatres.

It was my dad who first imagined Vijay as an actor when he was just a child. He saw it before any of us did — and you could say he set it all in motion.
My dad made sure Vijay had access to an action master, dance master, karate master. He'd always tell him to run around… He thought I'd become a sportsman. I was crazy about cricket. I remember I'd be up at 6 in the morning and push my dad to bowl for me for hours together. He'd patiently indulge me. Well, I ended up surprising him. Even when we didn't do well in exams — no matter what happened — our parents never judged us for the choices we made. They gave us complete freedom, and that gave us the confidence to make our own decisions. After Vijay came back home after completing school, he wasn't keen on academics and was interested in drama. My dad spoke to theatre veteran
Vinay Varma
, arranged ₹30,000, and enrolled him in an acting workshop.
'I took the leap because he believed in me'
I went on to pursue my MS and moved to the US. By 2017, I was working as a Senior Consultant, doing tech strategy, when
Arjun Reddy
released. Life was comfortable — stable, well-paying — but I slowly realised it wasn't what I truly wanted to do. When I told my mother that, she simply said, 'Move back.'
Around that time, Vijay had just launched his clothing line, and I thought I'd return home and help him with that. But then someone approached my dad with the script of Dorasani.
He read it, passed it on to me — and, as always, left the decision entirely to me. Looking back, I know I could take that leap because I had the kind of parents who stood by me no matter what. Their faith in me is what gave me the courage to begin.
He saw the actor in Vijay long before the rest of us did. He never pushed us, just gently nudged us toward what he believed we could become. Whether it was enrolling him in an acting workshop or bowling with me for hours — he always showed up. Quietly, patiently, without ever expecting anything back
I got to see a different side of him last year when we went on our first family vacation to New York. While we were walking in Central Park, he hugged us and said 'You guys have some so far. I'm so proud.' Life had come full circle
'Whatever we've done, he's been right behind us'
Two of the most important lessons I've learnt from my dad are to always put family first, and to stay practical — about life, work, everything.
He just has so much innate love — and he shows it by being fully present. He's involved in every aspect of our lives. He's the single point of contact for everything in our production house. Recently, we bought a piece of land in our village, and he's taken it upon himself to turn it into an organic farm.
He believes that's the future. That's just who he is — steady, thoughtful, and always there, having our back. I got to see a different side of him last year when we went on our first family vacation to America. While we were walking in New York's Central Park, he hugged us and said 'You guys have some so far. I'm so proud.' Life had come full circle. But I know it all began with the dream he once dared to chase.
Thank you, nanna — you dreamed for us before we even knew how to dream.

Super Dancer Chapter 5: Contestant Shanky's tearful tribute to his ailing mother as she joins me through a video call

The stage of Super Dancer Chapter 5 has always been filled with electrifying performances, but some moments go beyond entertainment — they touch the soul. One such deeply emotional moment will come from contestant Shankal Gupta, affectionately known as Shanky, whose performance became a tribute to his ailing mother. This season, the show celebrated mothers by inviting them to perform alongside their children. But for Shanky, the moment turned bittersweet as his mother, Seema, couldn't be present on set due to health concerns. Despite her absence, her spirit and love were very much felt — thanks to a surprise video call arranged by the production team. Shanky's father stepped in to perform with him, and as the two danced, Seema watched with moist eyes on the call. 'I'm happy that Shanky's father is performing in my place,' Seema said, fighting back tears. 'All the mothers are performing, only I am not there with Shanky. I am feeling very upset. I wish I could have been there.' In response, judge Geeta Kapur shared a message of warmth and reassurance: 'You are very much here with us. We all are praying for your speedy recovery so you can soon join us on the show.' Turning his vulnerability into strength, Shanky delivered a powerful, heartfelt performance that moved everyone present. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 21st Century Skills Start with Confident Communication Planet Spark Learn More Undo The judges — Geeta Kapur, Shilpa Shetty, and Marzi Pestonji — praised not only his talent but also the emotional depth he brought to the stage. Johnny Lever throws shade at modern-day actors and comedians for relying on vulgarity, double-meaning jokes: 'No aukat to stand before us. They copy and think...'

Johnny Lever has voiced his concerns about the increasing vulgarity and double-meaning jokes in modern Indian comedy, attributing it to Hollywood's influence. He challenges today's comedians to prove their talent by creating clean, skillful humor, emphasizing the importance of family-friendly content. Lever proudly notes his daughter, Jamie Lever, continues his legacy of clean comedy. Johnny Lever , one of India's most beloved comedians, is not mincing words when it comes to the current state of comedy. In a recent chat, the veteran performer took a sharp dig at modern-day actors and stand-up artists for leaning heavily on vulgarity and double-meaning jokes. With over 300 films to his name and a career built on clean, skillful humour, Lever's critique carries weight—and a challenge to the next generation. Hollywood's Influence on Indian Comedy In a conversation with actress Kunickaa Sadanand on her YouTube channel, Johnny pointed out that the rising use of foul language and crass humour in Indian comedy is influenced by Hollywood. He criticised today's actors and comedians for blindly imitating Western content, noting that many now consume only English films. Kunickaa too echoed Lever's concerns, adding that many young actors and comedians today lack a proper command of Hindi, further distancing themselves from traditional Indian comedic sensibilities. A Shift in Comic Sensibility The veteran comedian further explained that this shift in influence has impacted comedic sensibilities. He noted that many performers directly lift content from Hollywood, assuming it will work in the Indian context. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bristol: If You Were Born Between 1940-1975 You Could Be Eligible For This Life Cover Reassured Undo This mindset, he said, has led to the widespread use of double-meaning jokes in today's comedy. Stand-Up Under Fire Johnny also weighed in on the current wave of stand-up comedy, criticizing its frequent reliance on double-meaning content. He emphasized that his generation of comedians was trained to avoid such shortcuts, and insisted that if seasoned performers like him resorted to that style, today's newcomers wouldn't be able to match up. Yet, he added, they consciously chose to stick to clean, skillful comedy. He wrapped up his thoughts with a subtle challenge to today's comedians, urging them to prove their talent by making people laugh without relying on vulgarity. He acknowledged that audiences may enjoy the current wave of content, but emphasized the importance of clean humour, especially for those who cater to a family audience—something he continues to hold himself accountable to. Jamie Lever Carries the Torch Johnny also mentioned that his daughter, Jamie Lever, continues the legacy by performing solo shows without resorting to vulgar humour, staying true to the values he upholds. Ironically, the veteran comedian was recently seen in Housefull 5—a film that came under fire for the very elements he criticises, including crass jokes and excessive vulgarity.
