Here's The Sunday Game's Football Team of the Year for 2025
NEWLY-CROWNED ALL-IRELAND champions Kerry lead the way with eight representatives on The Sunday Game's Football Team of the Year, including the RTÉ panel's Footballer of the Year, David Clifford. The Kingdom lifted their 39th All-Ireland title after a dominant 1-26 to 0-19 win over Donegal. Runners-up Donegal have four representatives on the team, while semi-finalists Meath and Tyrone and 2024 champions Armagh have one apiece. David Clifford got the Footballer of the Year nod, the Fossa sensation scoring 0-9 (3 2pt scores from play) today to bring his championship tally to 8-62. David Clifford is the #SundayGame Footballer of the Year for 2025 Tomás Ó Sé and the panel explain why the Kerry talisman deserves the honour — The Sunday Game (@TheSundayGame) July 27, 2025 'David Clifford is Footballer of the Year, and there'll be no veering away from that,' Kerry great Tomás Ó Sé said on behalf of The Sunday Game All-Ireland football final panel. 'He's just on a different level from everybody else. 'Early on in the season when things weren't going well, David Clifford was still performing. You even go back to the Meath game, they were destroyed on breaking ball, on kickouts, on hunger, yet when the ball actually got in, he was still doing damage. He was just at it, at the right level, all year long. 'He was the guy that was like The Pied Piper. The Kerry people are too busy taking money in the middle of the summer to be going up to Dublin, they don't travel for quarter-finals. He came out, people do listen to him. He was celebrating, he brought them along with them. He's obviously a leader in the dressing room. 'I think this year will be his third Footballer of the Year, he's really smoked it!' Ó Sé was joined by Mark McHugh, Cora Staunton, Ciarán Whelan, Paul Flynn and Enda McGinley on The Sunday Game panel tonight. Louth councillors back intervention for Palestinian boxing trip
The trip to Ireland is set to include a 'whistle stop' visit to Drogheda, where Cllr, Eric Donovan, a former international boxer, is hoping to lead a training session for the boxers from the West Bank and the Aida refugee camp in Palestine. Cllr. Donovan told the meeting that the group are looking forward to taking part in the event organised by Irish Sport for Palestine, which will includes male and female boxers, and both youth and senior competitors. A key part of the trip will see the group hosted by Irish Olympic champion Kellie Harrington in Dublin. "Potentially, this will be a fantastic opportunity for the Palestinian boxers to train with and learn from some of the best boxers in the world,' said Cllr. Donovan. 'It will also give them a temporary break from the constant bombardment of their country.' But pre-planning for the event has been overshadowed by fears over a delay in securing visas for the group. Cllr. Donovan submitted an emergency motion at the council meeting, saying: "Following the disappointing VISA administration debacle faced by GAA Palestine over the past few weeks and the resulting heartbreak of the children and sponsors involved in the project to bring kids from Palestine to play GAA in Ireland, I am calling on this Council to write to the Minister of Justice, Jim O'Callaghan to ensure that there is no similar administrative delay by the Department of Justice when Ireland welcomes the young Palestinian Boxing team from the Aida Refugee Camp near Bethlehem.' He said that only five of the group of 16 have had their visas approved, only because they hold non-Palestinian passports, and explained that all preparations on the Irish side, including garda vetting has taken place. Cllr. Donovan outlined to councillors that Irish Sport advocates for the Palestinian through sport and various fundraising events, which have helped to raise awareness about the situation in Palestine. The group has formed the Shamrock and Olive Tree Boxing project, which is planning the trip for boxers from Palestine and from Ramallah in the West Bank, to Waterford, Dublin and Louth before they head north to Belfast. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more 'One of the boxers is the Olympian Waseem Abu Sal, a world champion boxer, he is an Olympic athlete so to think that he is still waiting for approval.. my mind boggles,' said Cllr. Donovan. He asked councillors to write to the Minister to 'ensure this event is brought to a smooth fruition, and there is no repeat of what happened with GAA Palestine.' Cllr. Donovan added: ' An old coach of mine used to say that sport can change the world, and that there is nothing more uniting than sport, so I think it is extremely important that we extend the hand of friendship and solidarity with those who need it most.' Speaking after the meeting, Cllr. Donovan said: 'I want to thank all the councillors across the chamber as they supported my motion for the Council to write to Minister Jim O'Callaghan to ensure there is no repeat of the visa debacle leaving more heartbreak with young Palestinians. They have enough to contend with.'

Meath boss 'delighted' to overcome Kerry in LGFA All-Ireland semi after 'being written off the last year'
TG4 LGFA All-Ireland semi-final: MEATH 2-12 KERRY 1-9 Before and after Jack O'Connor's men fell to a comprehensive defeat to Meath in Tullamore last month, there were a few grumblings in the Kingdom about just how neutral Glenisk O'Connor Park was for a game between the two green and gold counties. But any advantages the male Meath players enjoyed at the home of Offaly GAA for that group game were dwarfed by the way the Royal County turned the midland venue into a real home atmosphere on Saturday afternoon, outnumbering their Kerry counterparts by around ten to one and making that advantage count on the pitch too by doing their bit to try and nudge Maggie Farrelly to give those 50/50 calls to the Leinster County, not to mention adding to the growing sense of momentum by hailing every sideline ball, every turnover and every contest win as if it was the final whistle. It was all a world away from the comfortable outing that Kerry enjoyed in the 2024 quarter-finals, where they brushed Meath aside by double scores in Tralee. Many pundits felt that 0-16 to 0-8 win was a sign of the end of an era for the 2021 and 2022 All-Ireland champions – but Saturday evening, Meath manager Shane McCormack said that once he got a few key players back into the side, he knew his team would always be leading contenders. 'We've been written off for the last year and a half and we had been rebuilding,' he said afterwards. 'A lot of girls came back as well and it was great to have them, these girls would run through a brick wall for you. Their determination and energy was the biggest thing there today. "We were two points up at half-time after playing against the wind and we just said to keep the scoreboard moving. Kerry got their goal but we didn't panic and I was delighted to see the composure'. Former Footballer of the Year Vicki Wall, who missed most of 2024 and only came on as a substitute in that game in Austin Stack Park, would have been earmarked by most as the most valuable returnee to the Meath panel. It was her sister Sarah who picked up Player of the Match honours on Saturday however, while Robyn Murray in goal was another crucial ingredient in the win, both for the way she cleaned up her own sector and also for the accuracy of her kickouts. 'I'm delighted for Sarah, she's been phenomenal, she came back into the setup last year and she's made the six spot her own with great leadership and composure, and we saw that with the goal as well'. The tumultuous roar that greeted the centre back's goal was one of many moments that cemented the feeling that this was always going to be Meath's day. 'The crowds came out in their droves, and today it wasn't Navan it was Tullamore and I'd say it was double the crowd, so my thanks to all the fans and supporters, we really appreciate it,' McCormack beamed. Given the final margin however, and the comprehensive manner of Meath's win, Kerry manager Mark Bourke could only acknowledge that while 2025 was a 'great year', with Munster and National League honours secured, they were clearly second best yesterday. 'I thought the hungrier team won,' said the Tralee man. 'Meath were there to the breaking ball. They were hunting in packs, they were overlapping in numbers, and we weren't doing that'. 'I thought we started well in the second half, we got a goal, but Meath brought it up another gear in terms of the hunger and intensity. That's the difference. 'It takes time to replenish twelve new players again. If anyone doesn't understand that they shouldn't be involved in it. But there's really a lot of talent in Kerry football. You could see it there. 'I'm very happy with the year. You play these games knowing that you could go in to lose. But did everyone do their best, did everyone buy in? Everyone bought in, everyone did their best. Did we lay it out right? "I think we did. Games are going to be won and lost. So, on to the next game,' he concluded.
