Putri Qisya receives ongoing support after tragic family loss
Relatives, school authorities, and community leaders have visited her since Monday, while NGOs and government representatives have stepped forward to assist.
Datuk Zuraidi Rahim, chairman of the Anak Muda MADANI Kedah Association, expressed deep concern for Putri Qisya's well-being.
'We are here to offer support and encouragement. We hope she remains strong despite this immense hardship,' he said after visiting her at her relative's home in Taman Sri Aman.
The association is working with the State Education Department to ensure her educational needs are met.
Sungai Petani MP Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari also visited Putri Qisya, conveying condolences from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife.
'The Ministry of Education will provide counseling to help her cope with the trauma,' he said.
The Kedah Education Department has assured that she will receive schooling assistance, including the Supplementary Food Programme and School Milk Programme.
Abdul Rahim Mat, the department's deputy director, confirmed that financial aid from insurance claims for her deceased siblings will be managed for her benefit.
Authorities are also prepared to assist with banking arrangements and school transfers if needed.
The bodies of Putri Qisya's parents and siblings were recovered after their car reportedly veered into Sungai Korok early Saturday. - Bernama

JKR completes SMK Sri Sadong project at a cost of RM28.73mil
SIMUNJAN: The construction project to replace the educational facilities of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sri Sadong here, worth RM28.73mil, was completed this year under the supervision of the Special Project Team 2 (PPK2) of the Public Works Department (JKR). Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the project, which began on March 17, 2022, is one of the Government's initiatives to strengthen the nation's learning ecosystem, especially in rural areas. "This project was implemented through a conventional consultancy method by contractor Welfield Services Sdn Bhd and involved various construction components including an academic block comprising 12 classrooms, workshops for electrical and electronics, manufacturing, as well as computer, science, chemistry, biology and physics laboratories," he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 3). Also built were a room for the Integrated Special Education Programme (PPKI), a canteen block, five units of F-class teachers' quarters, and various other supporting facilities to complete the school's infrastructure. Today, Nanta witnessed the official handover of the project to the Ministry of Education (MoE) at a ceremony held at the school. He said the successful implementation of this project demonstrates the government's ongoing commitment to providing modern, high-quality, and conducive educational infrastructure to support student excellence and bridge the gap in education quality between urban and rural areas. "I would like to express my appreciation to the Ministry of Education for the trust and cooperation extended to the Ministry of Works and JKR, particularly in terms of site supervision, which enabled this project to be completed successfully,' he said. He also urged JKR to continue monitoring and work closely with the contractor to resolve any complaints regarding defects during the Defects Liability Period (DLP), in accordance with the prescribed regulations. - Bernama

Headlights trigger flashbacks of Gerik bus crash, says Alza driver
SUNGAI PETANI: The sight of headlights behind him at night still triggers haunting memories for Mohd Lutfi Radzi, 37, who is faced with lingering trauma from a horrific accident that claimed 15 lives in Gerik last month. "Whenever I see lights approaching from behind at night, it brings me back to that moment," said the school teacher, who admitted that he remains deeply affected, especially when driving through dark stretches of road. Although emotional scars have gradually faded, Lutfi said the early days following the crash, particularly when his wife and children were still hospitalised, were the most difficult. "The memory is still vivid, but things are slowly improving. We have to keep moving forward as a family. In fact, we will soon travel along the same road again to visit my in-laws in Kemaman, Terengganu," he told reporters after receiving a visit from Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar at his home in Bukit Banyan yesterday. On June 9, Lutfi was behind the wheel of a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) when it collided with a bus at KM53 of the East-West Highway (Jalan Raya Timur-Barat) in Gerik, Perak. The family was heading home to Baling after celebrating Hari Raya Aidiladha in Kemaman. The crash claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students and left many others injured. Lutfi said his wife, Nurul Ain Zakaria, 36, and their two children, who were also injured in the incident, are now in stable condition but still require rest and should avoid strenuous activity. "As a whole, my family is about 80 per cent healed. My wife, who suffered five broken ribs, can now manage light chores such as sweeping and washing dishes but she takes frequent breaks. "Our eldest daughter, Nur Aisyah Nafisah, 6, who broke her right thigh, can move about but isn't allowed to place weight on the injured leg yet. While our youngest, Muhammad Ahsan Nafis, 2, only sustained minor bruises and scratches," he added. Lutfi said both his wife and daughter are expected to return to school by September, depending on their recovery progress. He also expressed his gratitude to all who have offered support and prayers, especially the education community. "I want to thank the media as well, and apologise for not being able to speak while I was in the hospital. My physical and emotional state back then just didn't allow it. "My heartfelt appreciation also goes to the State Education Department, Baling District Education Office, and fellow teachers from SK Malau and SK Tembak for their moral support and generous contributions," he added.

Sungai Korok Tragedy: Putri Qisya To Receive Two PERKESO Benefits
KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (Bernama) -- The next of kin of the Sungai Korok tragedy victims is eligible to receive two benefits from the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO), based on her late father's contributions. PERKESO, in a statement, said the late Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 31, was an active contributor under the Employees' Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4), with his last recorded employment as a security guard. 'With his contributions, the next-of-kin, his eldest daughter Putri Qisya, is entitled to receive a one-off Funeral Management Benefit (FPM) of RM3,000 and a monthly Survivors' Pension of RM576.25 until she turns 21 or completes her first degree,' the statement read.
