New Ross Singers to host concert for Fethard RNLI
'The lifeboats on our coasts are indispensable, and continue to come to the rescue in all weathers. Fethard has had a lifeboat service since 1996, having reopened after an 80-year break, and it relies heavily on donations,' said the Singers' Musical Director, Connie Tantrum.
'This concert is in the beautifully refurbished hall in Fethard, and it's a great chance to take a trip down memory lane, whilst maybe humming along too, as the choir will perform a mixture of music from the Messiah to Bohemian Rhapsody, and have recently been learning many of the classic popular songs, by, among others, the Beatles, Queen, Simon and Garfunkel and Billy Joel. The concert promises to make for a great night, and it's all for a good cause,' said Ms Tantrum.
Ms Tantrum also explained that following the group's 'well-earned rest', they plan to perform 'a completely different sort of music in November' such as Rossini's Petite Messe Solonnelle. The New Ross Singers will return after the concert in September, where new members are welcome.
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Fethard and tickets cost €15.

Galway Races; Follow the Pied Piper in the First
Gordon Elliott's Pied Piper can register a fourth consecutive win by taking the first, a maiden hurdle, at Galway (2.10) today. The Cullentra-based seven-year-old smashed it last time out, even if it was only a field of three at Roscommon, winning by 27 lengths. The negative may be that Pied Piper is giving weight away to all the others here but as a winner of four hurdle races and three chases previously, don't doubt he is a competitor. The song The Pied Piper is a proven stayer too albeit the singer Crispian St Peters (born Robin Smith) wasn't the most reliable - in fact, he was an insufferable, pretentious git. An instantly recognisable plaintive tune, The Pied Piper landed in the summer of 1966 and was a top five hit in the UK and US: "Hey, come on babe, Follow me, I'm the Pied Piper, "Follow me, I'm the Pied Piper, And I'll show you where it's at." The problem was that while the song was easy-listening on every radio station almost all of the time… It was the singer who wouldn't shut up, insufferable doesn't do justice to him. Among other things, he was claiming to be a better song-writer than the Beatles (he didn't even write The Pied Piper!). He claimed his stage show made Elvis Presley look like the Statue of Liberty, that he was more exciting than Tom Jones and on and on and on. Our Pied Paper with Jack Kennedy on board, even if there is the daunting idea there are four Willie Mullins runners in this 11 strong field, can hit all the right notes at circa 4/1. Paul McCartney describes Spinal Tap song as 'literature' in first sequel trailer
Beatles star Paul McCartney can be heard comparing a Spinal Tap song to "literature" in the first trailer for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. The clip also features Elton John performing Stonehenge with the fictional band at their reunion concert in the film, on a piano that rises from underneath the stage. Speaking in the trailer, McCartney says: " Pink Torpedo, that's literature, really." The film is a follow-up to This Is Spinal Tap (1984), and follows David St Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) as they reunite after a 15-year hiatus. In the trailer, introduced by Marty DiBergi (played by real life director Rob Reiner), the band's members are seen to have launched their own cryptocurrency and worked in a shop during their time apart. Their reunion is revealed to take place in New Orleans as a replacement for "an evening with Stormy Daniels" which was cancelled at the venue, while a scene showing them going through merchandise for the show sees the band looking at branded Tap Water. The band are later asked whether one of them would be willing to die during the concert, with one of the members replying: "Would you settle for a coma?" Spinal Tap II: The End Continues will be released in cinemas on 12 September. The original film followed the band from their beginnings as the skiffle group, The Originals, through to their time as a 1960s R&B group called The Thamesmen who had a hit with Gimme Some Money, before eventually becoming Spinal Tap, which begins as a psychedelic band before moving into heavy metal. As Spinal Tap, the film follows the group as they release the album Smell The Glove, which retailers refuse to sell due to its sexist cover, and plan a large-scale, Druid-themed glam rock show, but a replica of Stonehenge which was supposed to be 18ft high, ends up being 18 inches after they get the measurements wrong. The name Spinal Tap has become a derogatory term to describe real bands who overindulge in rock cliches, while the film also gave birth to the phrase "turn it up to 11" after guitarist Nigel's amps were shown to have volume switches that go to 11 rather than 10 in the original movie.
