Morocco Reiterates in Kigali Commitment to African Health Sovereignty

Maroc05-06-2025
Morocco reaffirmed on Wednesday in Kigali its commitment to African health sovereignty and to the progressive and inclusive implementation of the African Medicines Agency (AMA).
Speaking at the 2nd ordinary session of the Conference of the States Parties to the AMA Treaty, held on June 2-4, Minister of Health and Social Protection Amine Tahraoui hailed the creation of the Agency as a major step towards the continent's health sovereignty, enabling better access to safe, effective and quality medicines.
To Morocco, this continental momentum is a source of inspiration and an opportunity for regulatory convergence,' the Minister emphasized, stressing the importance of an approach tailored to the institutional and regulatory realities of each country, based on listening, consultation and respect for national priorities.
Tahraoui then called for the progressive harmonization of regulatory frameworks, the establishment of regular consultation mechanisms between national authorities and AMA, and the reinforcement of technical and human capacities on a continental scale.
Tahraoui also pointed out that by end 2024, the Kingdom had achieved 88% coverage in compulsory health insurance, adding that 11 million people benefited from direct state support.
A $4.2 billion health infrastructure modernization program is underway, he stated, adding that the number of university hospital centers will go from 6 to 12, while 79 new hospitals are under construction, and 1,439 primary health centers are being renovated, 70% of them in rural areas.
On the industrial front, Tahraoui noted that Morocco is the continent's second-largest pharmaceutical producer, with 56 industrial units covering 70% of national needs and exports to over 45 African countries.
With regard to the appointment of AMA's future Director General, Tahraoui spoke of Morocco's respect to the institutional process currently underway and full confidence in the competent commission to carry it out, in all transparency and impartiality.

Morocco Launches 200 Health Facilities Across Eight Regions

Marrakech – The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tahraoui, launched 200 rural and urban health facilities across eight regions of Morocco on Friday in Errachidia. These facilities, which have been rehabilitated and equipped, are part of a larger national program to improve healthcare access throughout the country. The inauguration ceremony took place at the 'Al Qods' health center in Errachidia during celebrations for the 26th anniversary of the Throne Day. Regional health directors participated via videoconference alongside the Wali of the Drâa-Tafilalet region and Governor of Errachidia province, Essaid Zniber. The new healthcare facilities are distributed across multiple regions: 40 in Drâa-Tafilalet, 39 in Fès-Meknès, 5 in Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma, 10 in Béni Mellal-Khénifra, 24 in Marrakech-Safi, 21 in Souss-Massa, 31 in l'Oriental, and 30 in Guelmim-Oued Noun. In a press statement, Minister Tahraoui explained that this launch falls within the framework of a comprehensive program to rehabilitate and equip 1,400 health centers nationwide. The primary goal is to strengthen healthcare offerings and bring medical services closer to the population, promoting equity and equal access to healthcare for all citizens. These facilities will provide a diverse range of services, including general and specialized medical consultations, chronic disease monitoring, maternal and child health monitoring, school health services, nursing care, health education, and epidemiological surveillance. The ministry has mobilized specialized human resources to deliver medical and curative services to the populations served by these health facilities. Additionally, they have modernized and equipped these structures with high-quality, advanced biomedical equipment. Earlier this week, on Monday, Minister Tahraoui announced before the House of Representatives a national program to rehabilitate 83 hospitals with a total capacity of 8,700 beds. This includes 1,729 beds scheduled to be operational in 2025 and an additional 2,056 beds by 2028. Regarding rural healthcare specifically, Tahraoui indicated that 950 health centers have already been rehabilitated, with work on the remaining facilities expected to be completed by the end of 2025. He noted that 71% of national health infrastructure is located in rural areas, comprising 2,186 establishments, including 433 second-level health centers equipped with delivery units or emergency services. Morocco's PJD criticizes government based on controversial Numbeo ranking [Fact-check]

Archive When it comes to attacking the government, the source or accuracy of the data no longer seems to matter. This is evident in the Justice and Development Party's recent criticism of the government's healthcare performance, based on a questionable ranking derived from the opinions of a small group of internet users. Despite its own extensive experience in public governance, the party ignored credible reports from official Moroccan and international institutions, such as Bank Al-Maghrib, the High Commission for Planning, the Court of Auditors, and the WHO, which, backed by rigorous methodology and field data, have themselves pointed to the government's shortcomings. Instead, the PJD chose to rely on the «Health Care Index by Country 2025», published by Numbeo, a platform whose credibility is highly disputed. In a lengthy article published on its website, the opposition party claimed that «despite the Akhannouch government's social-state rhetoric», Morocco ranked 94th out of 99 countries. It attempted to legitimize the ranking by describing Numbeo as «a site specializing in data analysis and international surveys», in an effort to lend credibility to its findings. The party went on to describe Morocco's position at the bottom of the African healthcare rankings as «alarming», noting that Rabat and Casablanca ranked 303rd and 310th, respectively, in terms of healthcare quality. The Truth Behind the Ranking Numbeo, the platform the PJD relied on, was founded in 2009 by Serbian national Mladen Adamovic and is registered in Serbia. The site openly admits that «the structure of the project allows anyone with an Internet connection to modify its content», and warns that «nothing found here has necessarily been reviewed by people with the expertise required to provide you with complete, accurate or reliable information. Use our content at your own risk». It further adds: «We do not provide any warranties that our services will meet your requirements, be uninterrupted, timely, accurate, or error-free, or that your information will be secure», and makes clear that «there is absolutely no assurance that any statement on the website is correct or precise». A closer look at the site reveals the weakness of its methodology. A single user can skew a city or country's overall rating simply by submitting multiple opinions. For instance, Rabat's healthcare rating was based on only 30 users, and Casablanca's on just 67, while Kaohsiung, Taiwan topped the global list based on only 47 submissions. Shifting Positions Ironically, back in 2019, when the PJD held the Ministry of Health under Saad Eddine El Othmani's leadership, it had firmly criticized Moroccan media for citing Numbeo's rankings. In an official statement at the time, the ministry dismissed the site's methodology, saying it lacked «scientific accuracy, sound methodology, and the standards used by recognized international institutions». The ministry stated that the rankings «were based on a small, unrepresentative sample, no more than 100 visitors to the site, and could not be used to evaluate national healthcare systems». It also warned media outlets to treat Numbeo's data with caution, describing it as «misleading and unaffiliated with any recognized international statistical health organization».

Casablanca's Oncorad Publishes 1st African Prostate Cancer Research in Leading U.S. Journal

Rabat – The Casablanca-based Oncorad Group has become the first cancer treatment center in Africa to publish research in 'Advances in Radiation Oncology,' in partnership with the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). The featured study, carried out by Oncorad's research team at the Le Littoral Clinic, explores a combined treatment protocol for aggressive prostate cancer, integrating high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy with external beam radiotherapy. Conducted on a cohort of more than 120 patients, including several international cases, the research demonstrated a 92% remission rate with no significant toxicity. These results are consistent with the highest global standards in cancer care. The project was developed by a multidisciplinary Moroccan team led by principal investigator Dr. Hamza Samlali and coordinated by Dr. Najlaa Assaid. The medical physics team included Youness Khobbaizi, Omar Hanicha, Mahdi Abou El Houda, and Sanaa Nabil, under the leadership of Professor Redouane Samlali, founder of Oncorad Group. The initiative also received academic support from Professor Hassan Jouhadi, head of oncology at the University Hospital of Casablanca and professor at the city's Faculty of Medicine. The study's inclusion of international patients further underscores its transnational relevance. Beyond this achievement, Oncorad's research unit continues to pursue a wide range of projects focused on locally adapted, innovative cancer care solutions. These include advances in robotic surgery, state-of-the-art radiotherapy techniques, and investigations into the genetic and biological dimensions of cancer—all supported through collaborations with national and international partners. Advances in Radiation Oncology is globally recognized for promoting impactful clinical research, particularly from resource-limited settings. With an impact factor of 2.7 and listings in leading databases such as PubMed Central, Scopus, and Web of Science, the journal's publication of Oncorad's study marks a significant milestone for African contributions to global medical literature. By bringing African data and perspectives to the forefront of scientific dialogue, Oncorad aims to support the development of more inclusive, evidence-based treatment strategies that benefit cancer patients across low- and middle-income countries.
