Indian benchmark indices ended the week in the red, with the Nifty closing 0.7% lower. A host of key domestic and global events lined up for the week ahead are likely to influence market sentiment when trading resumes on Monday.
ADVERTISEMENT On Friday, the Nifty declined by 143.05 points, or 0.6%, to end the day at 24,968.40.
Commenting on the day's action, Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, said the Nifty remained under selling pressure on Friday, slipping towards 24,900, where it found initial support. The index stayed above the 50-day exponential moving average (50 EMA) and appears poised for a short-term pullback after the recent sharp correction, he noted. However, De maintained that it remains a 'sell on rise' market as long as the Nifty trades below 25,260. On the downside, selling pressure may intensify if the index breaches the 24,900 mark, he added.
Key factors likely to impact market movement this week:It will be an earnings-heavy week, with 286 companies scheduled to announce their June quarter results over the next six days. Among the Nifty constituents, results are expected from Eicher Motors, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Infosys, Tata Consumer Products, Nestlé India, SBI Life Insurance, Cipla, and Kotak Mahindra Bank.Other widely tracked companies set to report include One 97 Communications (Paytm), Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC), United Breweries, Zee Entertainment, and Bajaj Housing Finance.
ADVERTISEMENT The Street will also react to the earnings of Reliance Industries and JSW Steel, which were announced on Friday after market hours. Additionally, results declared on Saturday by HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, and Reliance Power will keep these stocks in focus when markets reopen.A flurry of corporate actions is lined up this week, with record dates for dividends, rights issues, buybacks, and bonus shares scheduled for over 100 companies during the five-day trading window.
ADVERTISEMENT Companies announcing record dates for dividend payouts include:Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), Hero MotoCorp, Divi's Laboratories, Bharti Hexacom, Shree Cement, Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC, Radico Khaitan, Info Edge (India), Union Bank of India, and Zydus Lifesciences.
ADVERTISEMENT Meanwhile, Mahindra Logistics has set July 23 as the record date for its rights issue, and Focus Business Solution will determine eligibility for its bonus issue during the week.
Wall Street ended mixed on Friday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq struggling to notch meaningful gains as investors looked ahead to more corporate earnings and remarks from the Federal Reserve Chair next week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 142.30 points, or 0.32%, to close at 44,342.20. The S&P 500 ended flat at 6,296.79, while the Nasdaq Composite inched up 10.01 points, or 0.05%, to settle at 20,895.70.In the mainboard segment, four initial public offerings (IPOs) will open for subscription this week. Among them, IndiQube Spaces' Rs 700 crore book-building issue will open on Wednesday, July 23, with a price band of Rs 225 to Rs 237 per share. GNG Electronic's IPO will also launch on the same day.
ADVERTISEMENT Brigade Hotel Ventures' IPO will open on July 24, while Shanti Gold International will open on Friday, July 25, and close on Tuesday, July 29.In the SME segment, Monarch Surveyors & Engineering Consultants will open their IPO on July 22, TSC India on July 23, and Patel Chem Specialities on July 25.Meanwhile, three listings are likely this week: Anthem Biosciences, Monika Alcobev, and Spunweb Nonwoven.Market action will hinge on the behaviour of foreign institutional investors (FIIs) in the coming week. On Friday, FIIs were net buyers, purchasing equities worth Rs 374.74 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also remained net buyers, investing Rs 2,103.51 crore.Decoding Nifty's technical setup, Hrishikesh Yedve, AVP – Technical and Derivative Research at Asit C. Mehta Investment Intermediates, noted that the index has broken below its 34-Day Exponential Moving Average (34-DEMA) on the daily chart and formed a red candle, indicating weakness. However, Nifty managed to hold above the 50-DEMA, currently placed near 24,930. A decisive break below this level could drag the index lower towards the 24,750–24,500 zone. On the other hand, if the index sustains above 24,930, a pullback rally towards 25,200–25,250 cannot be ruled out, Yedve added. The Indian rupee weakened slightly on Friday, marking its second consecutive weekly loss, as the U.S. dollar rebounded from a more than two-year low and sustained equity outflows pressured domestic markets. The rupee closed at 86.1475, compared to its previous close of 86.0750, down 0.4% on the week.In the near term, the rupee is 'likely to hover closer to 86.50 than 85.50,' according to a trader at a large private bank. The trader attributed the pressure to corporate dollar demand and outflows from Indian equities.Foreign investors have net sold around $300 million in Indian equities so far in July, after infusing $1.7 billion in June.Meanwhile, the dollar index was poised for its second straight weekly gain, supported by robust U.S. economic data that tempered expectations of imminent rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.Crude oil prices remain a key variable for stock markets, given their ability to influence a country's inflation trajectory. Oil prices edged lower on Friday, despite gains in the previous session, as concerns over drone attacks on northern Iraqi oil fields—which could disrupt supply—weighed on sentiment.U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude settled at $67.30, down $0.24 or 0.36%, while Brent crude futures were trading near $69.28, up $0.29 or 0.42%.

Indian crypto exchange CoinDCX says it lost over $44 million following a hack

CoinDCX, a leading Indian cryptocurrency exchange, confirmed on Saturday, July 19, that a security breach has resulted in the loss of $44.2 million (Rs 380 crore approx.) The Mumbai-based firm has disclosed that hackers compromised and drained all the funds from one of its internal operational accounts that is used for liquidity provisioning, which helps minimise slippage and ensure smoother trading. Ethical hacker ZachXBT was the first to flag the breach, and said that he uncovered the incident 17 hours after it happened. CoinDCX has emphasised that the wallets used to store customer assets were not impacted by the hack. INR withdrawals and other trading activity remain operational. The centralised crypto exchange initially paused its Web3 mode feature as a precautionary measure. A few hours later, it restored the in-app feature that gives users access to over 50,000 DeFi (decentralised finance) tokens. 'The incident was quickly contained by isolating the affected operational account. Since our operational accounts are segregated from customer wallets, the exposure is only limited to this specific account and is being fully absorbed by us – from our own treasury reserves,' Sumit Gupta, Co-founder and CEO, CoinDCX said on X 'Our internal security and operations teams have been working through the day along with leading cybersecurity partners to investigate the matter, patch any vulnerabilities and trace the movement of funds,' he added. CoinDCX also assured that its reserves are sufficient to fully cover the losses from the hack. 'This won't cause any loss to any of our customers and CoinDCX will be bearing the full amount from our treasury reserves, which is sufficiently healthy to cover up for this amount,' Gupta said. Exactly one year ago to the day, hackers breached another Indian crypto exchange, WazirX, and made away with over $230 million in crypto assets. The crypto industry's vulnerability to such incidents remains a pressing concern as it could undermine investor confidence. It could also fuel further scepticism of cryptocurrency by regulators in countries like India, where the sector is still under evaluation. The CoinDCX hack adds to what is already shaping up to be the worst year-to-date on record for crypto thefts. Hackers have stolen more than $2 billion in crypto during the first half of 2025, according to new data from crypto analysis firm Chainalysis. 'I understand incidents like this can be unsettling – even when customer assets are unaffected. That's why I am sharing this incident with you with full transparency,' Gupta said on X. On what to do next, he said that CoinDCX will be collaborating with its exchange partner to block and recover assets. It will also be launching a bug bounty programme soon.

FPIs exit secondary market in July, but stay active in IPOs. What's fueling the shift?

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have turned net sellers in India's secondary markets in July, offloading over Rs 10,000 crore in equities amid valuation concerns and underperformance. However, their primary market investments remain strong, indicating a shift in strategy. Despite near-term caution, FPIs continue to tap IPO and QIP opportunities, reflecting selective optimism toward Indian equities. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have turned net sellers in Indian equities this July, but their activity in the primary market remains strong — highlighting a strategic shift amid concerns over valuations and the relative underperformance of Indian to data from NSDL, FPIs sold equities worth Rs 10,775 crore through the secondary market between July 1 and July 18, 2025. However, during the same period, they invested Rs 5,251 crore in the primary market, mainly via initial public offerings ( IPOs ) and qualified institutional placements (QIPs).Dr. V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services , said this trend reflects a valuation-sensitive approach by foreign investors.'The important takeaway from this dualistic behaviour of FPIs is that whenever valuations get stretched in the secondary market, they sell — but consistently buy in the primary market (QIP), where valuations are fair,' Vijayakumar said.'So long as valuations remain elevated, this trend will continue,' he added. 'India's underperformance relative to other emerging markets and the MSCI EM Index may also have contributed to FPI selling through the exchanges.'Vijayakumar pointed out that for the calendar year 2025 up to July 19, FPIs have sold equities worth Rs 1.10 lakh crore in the secondary market, while investing Rs 27,239 crore in the primary market. Despite the outflows via exchanges, their continued interest in new issuances suggests that FPIs are not exiting Indian equities entirely, but are reallocating their exposure based on value and return after rallying over 15% between March and June, Indian equity markets have taken a breather in July. So far this month, the Sensex and Nifty have declined more than 2%, weighed down by weaker-than-expected earnings from key financial and IT companies, as well as global trade Friday, July 18, the Nifty50 slipped 0.57% to close at 24,968, while the BSE Sensex fell 0.61% to settle at 81,757. The indices also logged their third consecutive weekly loss, with the Nifty50 down 0.7% and the Sensex losing 0.9% for the banks led the sectoral declines, falling nearly 2% for the week, followed by losses in financials and IT, which were down 1.1% and 1.5%, respectively. Axis Bank shares tumbled 5.2% on Friday and 6.3% for the week after posting a surprise drop in quarterly profit. HCLTech, India's third-largest IT services firm, also fell 5.5% for the week after it cut its full-year operating margin focus now shifts to the upcoming earnings season and potential developments in India-US trade talks ahead of the August 1 deadline. Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump said a deal with India is 'close,' which could lend some support to market now, FPI data underscores a cautious yet opportunistic approach. While the secondary market may remain under pressure due to elevated valuations and global headwinds, sustained activity in IPOs and primary issuances could continue—particularly if pricing remains attractive.
