Govt committed to strengthening aerospace ecosystem, says PM Anwar

RIO DE JANEIRO: The government is committed to strengthening the national aviation industry ecosystem and is ready to assist investors in achieving this goal.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated this will be accomplished through investor-friendly policies, local talent development, and high-impact technology collaboration.
According to him, this aligns with the government's aspiration to position Malaysia as a leading aerospace hub in the Asean region, boasting a highly skilled workforce and a robust, competitive industry ecosystem.
Anwar made these remarks in a statement following a meeting with a delegation from Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer, led by its President and CEO Francisco Gomes Neto, here on Monday (July 7).
The meeting was held to discuss strategic investment opportunities, the Prime Minister said, who is here to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit taking place from July 6-7.
Additionally, he mentioned that discussions also touched on Embraer's potential investments in Malaysia, including collaborations with national airlines.
"I emphasised the Government's commitment to strengthening the aviation industry ecosystem," said Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister.
He stated that Malaysia welcomes Embraer's participation in developing maintenance centres, pilot training, supply chains, and low-carbon aircraft innovations in line with the Madani Economy framework and the National Aerospace Industry Master Plan 2030.
Anwar also appreciated Embraer's interest in strengthening cooperation in the defence sector through efforts to enhance the air mobility capabilities of the Malaysian Armed Forces.
"The government is committed to ensuring that all forms of cooperation translate into high-value job opportunities, technology transfer, and inclusive economic growth for Malaysians," he said.
Embraer, a global aerospace company headquartered in Brazil, is involved in commercial and executive aviation, defence and security, and agricultural aviation.
The company designs, develops, manufactures, and markets aircraft and systems, providing after-sales services and support to customers.
Since its establishment in 1969, Embraer has delivered over 9,000 aircraft to its customers.
In the meeting, the Embraer delegation also included its Vice President of Global Institutional Relations, Jose Serrador Neto, and Senior Vice President, Head of Asia Pacific Region, Raul Villaron.
Anwar was accompanied by Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. - Bernama

47th ASEAN Summit in KL to be largest gathering with global leaders

RIO DE JANEIRO: The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur this October is poised to be the largest in the bloc's history, with multiple global leaders confirming attendance. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed the expanded participation during his official visits to Italy, France, and Brazil. Key attendees include Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Anwar noted the summit's broader engagement beyond ASEAN's traditional partners, calling it a 'major undertaking' that reflects growing international interest in the region. The event, scheduled for October 26–28, will build on last year's 46th ASEAN Summit, which included the ASEAN-GCC and ASEAN-GCC-China meetings. ASEAN's 10 member states—Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and the Philippines—will be joined by dialogue partners like the US, China, Japan, and the EU. Lula da Silva, speaking at the BRICS Business Forum, urged Brazilian businesses to leverage the summit as a critical trade platform. Anwar expressed confidence in Malaysia's readiness to host the high-profile gathering, stating, 'God willing, we will be able to shoulder it together.'

Photo by Andrew Caballero-Reynolds/AFP KUALA LUMPUR - The United States has imposed a higher tariff of 25 percent on any and all Malaysian products sent into the country, separate from all sectoral tariffs, effective Aug 1, this year. This is one percentage point higher compared to what had been announced in April. In a letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim posted on Truth Social account on Monday, US President Donald Trump said "the 25 per cent number is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit disparity we have with your country". Trump also said that if Malaysia decided to raise tariffs, the number that the country imposed will be added onto the 25 per cent that US is charging. Malaysia has been negotiating the US tariff with Washington since April, with the aim to lessen the 24 per cent tariff imposed earlier, with the latest talks held on June 18 this year. This announcement came ahead of the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's first trip to Kuala Lumpur for the ASEAN-US post ministerial conference and other meetings of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting and related meetings starting today. - BERNAMA More Like This
