UK weather: Thunderstorms ahead - but temperatures are set to remain high
The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for much of England, stating there's a risk of sudden flooding, travel delays and power cuts on Friday and into Saturday.
The first warning covers most of England and is in place for 9pm on Friday to 6pm on Saturday.
The second - for parts of the East Midlands, North East England and Yorkshire and the Humber - is for 12pm to 8pm on Friday.Spray and flooding could cause road closures and even cut some communities off, the Met Office has said, adding that lightning strikes could damage buildings.
Sky weather producer Joanna Robinson said: "Heavy, thundery rain will move in from France on Friday night, pushing northwards across much of England on Saturday, reaching Scotland later in the day.
"The rain will be torrential in places, bringing up to 30mm in less than an hour, with 60-90 mm in less than three hours for some isolated spots."
Recent dry weather could increase the risk of flash flooding, as torrential rain falling on hard, baked ground will run off rather than being easily soaked in.
Despite the rain, it will still be hot - with temperatures expected to reach the high 20s for much of England.
It will remain unsettled on Sunday and into next week, Robinson added.
"There'll be torrential rain for some, with further weather warnings likely when confidence in the detail improves," she said.
"The unsettled conditions will continue early next week, but exactly where the worst of the storms will be is currently very uncertain.
"There are signs that high pressure will help settle things down from the west on Wednesday."

The wet weather comes as England is struggling with its driest start to a year since 1976.
Across the country, rainfall was 20% less than the long-term average in June, which also saw two heatwaves rive unusually high demand for water, the Environment Agency said.
With national reservoir levels at 75.6% and currently continuing to fall, in multiple regions.
are also hitting millions of homes, with Yorkshire Water announcing restrictions as its reservoir storage dropped to just 53.8%.

Why has there been a surge in water pollution?
After years of protest, promised action, and bill increases, it would be reasonable to expect the sewage scandal to have improved. In fact, it's done the complete opposite: A 60% increase in pollution incidents between 2023 and 2024. Water firms admit they're not doing well enough, but point out, correctly, that 2024 was a wet year. Wet weather means a greater likelihood of sewage spills from pipes that carry both rainfall and sewage. Environment Agency data reveals that the excuse doesn't wash. Serious pollution incidents are up 30% since 2016. And this is the third consecutive year in which they've increased. Their latest report reaffirms what we already know: Persistent underinvestment and poor asset maintenance are why the sewage system can't cope. The share of the problem varies widely from company to company, with United Utilities and Northumbrian Water having the fewest pollution incidents. Then it's Southern, Anglian, and Thames Water, England's largest water firm, topping the pollution pop charts. There was some good-ish news. Transparency seems to be improving almost across the board, with more companies "self-reporting" pollution incidents than ever before. It's notable, however, that for the 11 most serious - Category 1 - pollution incidents in 2024, only four were reported by water companies themselves, the other seven by third parties. It's easy, of course, to blame the water companies. But the Independent Water Commission, due to report next week, is expected to call for a radical shake-up of the sector, including the possible dismantling of water regulator Ofwat. The buck, ultimately, rises higher than that before stopping. The resulting lack of real engineering - of our sewers and water supplies - has left a problem for which there can now be no quick or cheap fix.

Stormy day with a drop in temperatures around New Mexico
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Muggy conditions have remained this morning with patchy fog in the east and lingering showers in the higher elevations to northeast New Mexico. Above freezing temperatures are confined to most of the higher peaks of the northern Mountains, with valley floor locations starting off in the high 40s or in the 50s. Elsewhere is mostly starting off in the 50s to the lower 70s. Flooding is likely, across the mountains, and partially down some of the valleys floors, including parts of the Rio Grande Valley. Thick clouds will dampen temperatures with most reaching the 70s, 80s and near 90 degrees. Some highly-elevated areas or northern areas may not get out of the 60s. The pattern of muggy mornings with breezy afternoons will still continue. More storms will fire off, with an influx of low-level moisture from the Gulf and lower pressure approaching from the Rockies. This will keep the stormy, muggy pattern in place with gusty winds.
