Frances Tiafoe backs efforts to expand grassroots tennis in UK

Much of that is down to the expense of equipment and limited access to properly maintained courts and coaching, in practice fencing the game off from some demographics.
Frances Tiafoe was speaking alongside Ian Wright and Clare Balding at an event to mark one year of Barclays Free Park Tennis scheme (PA)
Current world number 12 Tiafoe, whose family immigrated to the United States from Sierra Leone during the 90s, cites his early introduction to the game as an outlier.
Had his father not worked as janitor at a tennis centre in Tiafoe's hometown Maryland, he believes he would never have taken up a game which was seen as off limits to people from less affluent backgrounds.
'You give a chance to people in inner cities, people who wouldn't be able to do a particular sport,' said Tiafoe, who was speaking at an event in London to mark one year of Barclays Free Park tennis scheme, which provides facilities and coaching with the aim of removing barriers between children and grassroots sport.
'In America, that's why everyone's so quick to play basketball. All you need is a ball and a hoop. Same as (football) over here (in the UK).'
He believes that initiatives like Free Park Tennis – billed as the sport's answer to Park Run and which provides for free the coaches and equipment many would otherwise be unable to afford – will provide the stimulus in the UK for barriers to fall away.
'Tennis you need rackets and strings and shoes, it becomes very upper echelon,' he said. 'This way everyone will be able to it. That's what means a lot to me.'
Tiafoe, a two-time US Open semi-finalist in 2022 and 2024, will be aiming to improve upon his Wimbledon record – where he has never progressed beyond the fourth round – when play begins on Monday.
The 27-year-old is drawn to face the Dane Elmer Moller in the first round with a possible second-round meeting with Brit Cameron Norrie.
He believes that more players from his background will in future feel they can follow in his footsteps, with the UK leading the way in breaking down barriers.
'There'd be three or four of me sitting here if we had these schemes (in the US),' he said. 'That's why I'm so passionate about these type of things.'

BBC Sport presenter Ian Wight, also speaking at the event, said his own experience of growing up on a council estate in south London pushed him and his peers towards football because sports like tennis appeared closed off.
'When we were younger, you go the tennis court where I lived in Brockley, it was always empty,' he said. 'I didn't see anybody on there – white, black, nobody.
'There were people who played football with us just because it's easy to get a football and all of you can play. I'm sure some of those guys, if they had the facilities from this kind of initiative, they would have done it. '

Emma Raducanu breaks silence on Carlos Alcaraz rumours with four-word response

Emma Raducanu has responded to rumours of a blossoming romance between herself and her US Open doubles partner Carlos Alcaraz ahead of the start of Wimbledon on Monday Emma Raducanu has laughed off suggestions of a romantic relationship with Carlos Alcaraz on the eve of Wimbledon. Raducanu will team up with Alcaraz to play mixed doubles at the US Open later this year – and the exciting pairing has led to suggestions of something more between them. The British No.1 is preparing to face teenage wildcard Mimi Xu in the first round at Wimbledon on Monday. The world No.38 is focused on the match after competing at Eastbourne, but still had to address rumours about Alcaraz in her pre-tournament press conference in SW19. ‌ Raducanu has been friends with the Spaniard for four years and they were spotted practising together at Wimbledon on Friday. Asked if they had discussed tactics for the US Open, she replied: 'No, it was fun yesterday. We were both on court with (water brand) Evian. ‌ 'Yeah, we were just getting some volley practicing ahead of New York. Yeah, I'm really happy obviously to be playing with him. Yeah, we had a good time yesterday.' Later in the press conference, came the question she must have known was coming. Asked if there was any substance in the romance rumours, Raducanu replied with a smile: 'We're just good friends.' The interview moderator then stepped in to end the questions, prompting a laugh from Raducanu, who added: 'Way to wrap up!' Raducanu and Alcaraz are both 22 years old and the British star recently explained how they became friends. She said: 'I've known him for years and actually in Wimbledon 2021, it was like kind of the first time I started getting to know him, and I had a good run there and then also again in the US Open in 2021. 'And I remember he was always playing the day before me and I was playing like the second day of the round. And I would see him win and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too. 'And I remember he beat Stef [Tsitsipas] in the third round and it was like a big win, his breakout kind of win on a big stage and it was really cool to kind of, I guess, go through that tournament together and then I kept going through the US Open, but we were staying in touch for the whole time and yeah, it's nice.' She added: 'We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago. 'I think for all of us, we really kind of value those connections that we had from when we were young because when you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age because you're like, that's a real genuine connection, because it becomes very busy and you have a lot more friends but the ones that you've known for a long time mean a lot more to you.'

Griekspoor triumphs in Mallorca with Wimbledon looming

SANTA PONSA, Spain, June 28 (Reuters) - Tallon Griekspoor won his third career title on Saturday, defeating Corentin Moutet 7-5 7-6(3) in the final of the ATP 250 Mallorca Championships. The 28-year-old Dutchman needed nearly two hours to prevail on the grass courts in warm weather at Santa Ponsa, near Palma, the capital of the Balearic Islands. Frenchman Moutet carved out several break chances and managed to capitalise on key moments in the opening set, but it still was not enough to shift the momentum his way as Griekspoor held his nerve and good volley game to seal the win. For 26-year-old Moutet, the frustration was visible as he fell short in a second career final, having also lost against Andrey Rublev in Doha back in 2020. Griekspoor, making his return from an injury that had forced him to withdraw from his fourth-round clash with Alexander Zverev at the French Open, made a strong statement ahead of Wimbledon, showcasing his form on grass. The Wimbledon tournament starts on Monday and will run to July 13.

Upbeat Djokovic still hunts milestones with 20th Wimbledon looming

LONDON, June 28 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic says he is still hunting more career milestones as he prepares for his 20th Wimbledon bidding to match Roger Federer's record of eight men's singles titles. The emerging duopoly of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner has shifted the focus away from the 38-year-old Serb who will be seeded sixth this year, his lowest since 2018. Despite that, no one will be dismissing the threat he poses as he chases an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam title. Asked whether it felt like he was now more hunter than hunted, after being knocked off his perch by the young guns, Djokovic said his goals remained the same. "In a sense you're always hunting because you're always going for the titles, and in my privileged position, the records and more history," he told reporters after practising at a sunny and warm Wimbledon on Saturday. "I do feel that I'm always in that position of going for something with the attitude of trying to win rather than trying to defend." Djokovic has reached the final of the last six Wimbledons, losing the last two to Spaniard Alcaraz. He has not added to his Grand Slam collection since the 2023 U.S. Open, since when Alcaraz and Italian Sinner have shared them, winning three apiece. He admits he was outplayed by world number one Sinner in the French Open semi-finals but had taken encouragement from that run in Paris. A return to Wimbledon perhaps offers him the best chance of breaking their stranglehold and becoming the oldest Grand Slam champion in the professional era. "I would probably agree that Wimbledon could be the best chance because of the results I had, because of how I feel, how I play in Wimbledon, just getting that extra push mentally and motivation to perform at the highest level," he said. "Let's see. I like the way I feel right now physically. Tennis-wise I've been playing good on the practice sessions. Obviously completely different when you start a tournament. "But yeah, I'll try to have a very good tournament and go as far as I can." Djokovic opens his latest Wimbledon quest against Frenchman Alexandre Muller on Tuesday needing just three victories to become only the second man to reach 100 match wins at the grass court Grand Slam. Federer won 105.
