Ladysmith Black Mambaso legacy: Meet singer Yandani Shabalala

News2417-06-2025
He's a young man with big dreams and extraordinary talent in music.
Yandani Shabalala is the grandson Joseph Shabalala, founder of legendary five-time Grammy Award winning music group Ladysmith Black Mamabazo, and the son of the group's current lead singer Thamsanqa Shabalala. He's now stepping into his own sound.
Shaped by musical greatness, the 19-year-old Durbanite embraces R&B and soul sounds with ethereal vocals and has garnered widespread attention with his latest single, a 'feel-good anthem' titled Honeydew.

He shares with TRUELOVE how his family's musical heritage shaped his love for music.
'Growing up watching them perform and go on world tours would make me wish and hope I'd be doing the same thing someday. I've always been interested in music and singing and just watching them continue to sing and perform for so many years inspires me a lot.'
Yandani continues, 'I grew up just being that child who wouldn't stop singing and when I was younger, I used to even perform for my family members, singing Diamonds by Rihanna as if it was my song. One thing everyone knows about me though is that I love Ariana Grande. Any opportunity I get, I will talk about her. She's my biggest inspiration.'
Yandani's musical talent is purely that: talent.
He tells us, 'I don't train at all. I just sing and hope for the best. I do want to get professional training though someday in the future so I can know all the tips and tricks on making sure I protect my vocals as years go by.'
With a full EP on the way while working on solidifying his sound, Yandani has hit the ground running with his sonic passion.
Yandani says, 'I think it's important to not overthink the decision to reach for your dreams. I know we tend to think of what people are going to say or the judgmental remarks we may receive but it's important to use that to drive you to greatness.
'Block every negative person out and focus on yourself. With that attitude you can be anything you want, and you'll definitely succeed in life and reach your goals and dreams.'

Billy Joel's Documentary Pushes Him Back Onto The Charts In A Major Way

Throughout July, HBO unveiled its two-part documentary about Billy Joel, titled Billy Joel: And So It Goes. The first episode was released on July 18, with the second following a week later. Now that the world is once again fixated on the Piano Man, interest in not just his life, but also his music, has soared. An uptick in sales and streams helps the beloved superstar return to the Billboard charts with not one, but two different projects. Billy Joel Fills Two Spots on the Billboard 200 Joel claims a pair of spaces on the Billboard 200 this week, as both Greatest Hits Volume I & Volume II and The Stranger reenter the ranking of the most consumed albums in the United States. The singles-packed compilation returns at No. 145, while The Stranger, one of Joel's most successful studio albums, lands at No. 167. Both sets have spent well over a year on the tally and have previously cracked the top 10, though neither has reached No. 1. Billy Joel Reaches a Milestone on Rock & Alternative Chart The singer-songwriter also occupies two spots on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart, but in a slightly different manner. The Stranger returns to the list at No. 45, while Greatest Hits Volume I & Volume II debuts at No. 37. As the compilation arrives, the hitmaker earns his milestone tenth appearance on the genre-specific ranking. The Stranger Sells More, Despite a Lower Ranking Joel's Greatest Hits compilation shifted 10,400 equivalent units in the latest tracking period, according to Luminate. The Stranger comes in not far behind, with slightly more than 9,600 equivalent copies moved. While the Greatest Hits set appears higher on the Billboard 200, The Stranger is actually the better seller. The lower-ranking effort sold just under 1,900 copies in America last week, as the impact from Joel's docuseries made a mark. Meanwhile, the compilation sold approximately 900 pure units, though it was the top performer on streaming platforms.

Original lead singer of iconic metal band dies at 69

Paul Mario Day, Iron Maiden's original lead singer, has died after a reported battle with cancer. He was 69. The heavy metal vocalist died peacefully at his Australia home on Tuesday, July 29, Parade reported. Iron Maiden also posted about Day's death on Facebook Wednesday. 'We are deeply saddened that Paul Mario Day, Iron Maiden's first ever vocalist back in 1975, has passed away,' the band wrote. 'Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Paul's family and friends. Paul was a lovely person and good mate. Rest in peace Paul.' Day joined Iron Maiden as their inaugural frontman in December 1975 at just 19 years old. Day performed at Iron Maiden's first concert on May 1, 1976, at St. Nicholas Hall in Poplar, London, before being replaced by Dennis Wilcock in October of that same year. After leaving Iron Maiden, Day continued his career in the British heavy metal scene. In 1980, he formed the band More, releasing their debut album 'Warhead' in 1981. 'We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the great More vocalist Paul Mario Day,' his former band More wrote in a statement, per Parade. 'Paul was a huge part of the [New Wave of British Heavy Metal] from his time in an early version of Iron Maiden, and of course his fantastic performance on the 'Warhead' album.' More then fronted the band Wildfire from 1983 to 1984 after leaving More before their sophomore album. More's most commercially successful period came in 1985 when the singer joined Sweet, working alongside guitarist Andy Scott and drummer Mick Tucker. 'Paul Mario Day RIP,' Scott said, according to Parade. 'PMD was the original singer with IRON MAIDEN and had a stint with the band MORE before joining SWEET. He passed away peacefully at his home in Australia.' Disney+ Just Dropped A 100% Scored, Canon MCU Show Without A Word

While I know that Disney has said it's scaling back its Marvel TV series ambitions, what they've been doing lately with their 'leftover' shows is nothing short of bizarre. Last time it was Ironheart, released with little fanfare in two weeks of episode dumps. Today? It's Eyes of Wakanda, a new MCU series that unlike What If…? and its multiverses, is full MCU main-Earth canon. Eyes of Wakanda is a four-episode series that was binge-dumped today, and it's more like a two-hour movie with 30-minute episode lengths. The synopsis is: 'Wakandan warriors throughout history go on dangerous missions to retrieve Vibranium artifacts.' The episodes span a wide range, including one taking place during the Trojan War and another featuring the fourth Iron Fist we've seen in the MCU, one from far in the past. Kind of a big deal! Again, this may be centuries before the events of the current MCU, but everything in here is canon, and it's been added to the official timeline of the universe, beating out Captain America: The First Avenger, which obviously kicked things off during World War II. Disney did not appear to think it was worth bothering with really any promotion for this at all, not in the run-up to launch nor today on launch day. Though I suppose it did show me it first when I logged in. Eyes of Wakanda has made it to enough critics to gather eight reviews, all of which are positive, to give it a 100% score. I'm not sure how many more will be added here. I've started the series, and I already like it more than What If…?, a series that I think went deeply off the rails by the end. I don't love the animation style, personally, but the storytelling is very solid so far. The next two Marvel shows coming up are Marvel Zombies in December 2025 and Wonder Man in July 2026. We will also see a new season of Daredevil and the Punisher special. VisionQuest will be coming up at some point. For now, Eyes of Wakanda is a quick watch and helps bolster the lore of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by heading further in the past than we've ever seen before, and the deep roots of Wakanda are the perfect mechanism to do so.
