Greece detains 1,200 migrants in three days as arrivals from Libya surge
The coast guard said multiple boats were intercepted off Crete's southern coast from Saturday through Monday, prompting regional officials to request additional government assistance.
The uptick in arrivals coincided with a visit by Greece's foreign minister, Giorgos Gerapetritis, to Libya for talks with both the internationally recognized government and a rival administration, amid efforts to address the growing migration crisis and a maritime boundary dispute.
Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said patrols by the coast guard and navy in the region are likely to be intensified. He added that approximately 8,000 migrants have reached Crete since the start of the year.
'It's a complex and extremely serious issue. Crete and its residents are under significant strain,' Marinakis said. 'We hope that all the diplomatic efforts will bear fruit. Otherwise, we will be forced to adopt stricter and far more large-scale measures to ensure the country is protected.'
Migrants typically make the 350-kilometer (220-mile) journey to Crete in unseaworthy boats — often hastily constructed to survive a single voyage or in abandoned vessels modified in scrapyards.
Gavdos, a tiny island south of Crete, has been overwhelmed by arrivals. Boats and dinghies remain washed up on its pebble beaches, many of them accessible only on foot.
On one remote beach, David, a migrant from war-torn South Sudan, sat with five others as they rested to decide what to do next.
Speaking to The Associated Press, he said smugglers beat several people during the journey and demanded more money than originally agreed.
'After you pay the money, everything is by force. If you talk, they hit you,' he said. 'The boat was very dangerous — too many people.'
David, who asked to be identified only by his first name, said he hoped to stay anywhere in Europe.
'We didn't come to cause a problem. We came to save our lives,' he said. 'If you stay, you die.'

In an update, a reporter from KION News who is at the scene, said that the body of one person has been recovered as divers continue to search the area. "This is now a recovery mission," he told viewers as divers could be seen in the water. Responders received a lost radar alert as well a flurry of 911 calls from horrified locals who said they heard an engine revving or a loud noise before a huge splash in the ocean near Asilomar. On Facebook, one local said: "I'm dog sitting for my daughter in Pacific Grove. I'm laying in bed around 10PM and I hear a low flying airplane overhead. IDF special forces raid ‘freedom flotilla' boat heading to Gaza
Israeli special forces have raided a new 'freedom flotilla' boat trying to deliver food and baby formula to Gaza. The Handala, organised by pro-Palestinian activists, was met by IDF forces approximately 40 nautical miles offshore and brought to the port of Ashdod, in Israel. Footage shows an Israeli commando jumping onto the vessel as activists wearing life jackets sit on deck with their hands up. The incident is the second in recent months in which activists have tried to breach Israel's blockade of Gaza and deliver a symbolic amount of food to raise awareness of famine and starvation in the Strip. The first attempt saw Greta Thunberg and other activists intercepted on a different boat and later deported. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which organised the voyages, said on Sunday that 21 activists and journalists had been detained by the Israeli military. The Handala was carrying baby formula, food and medicine, the group said. Israel has strongly condemned attempts to breach its blockade – in place since shortly after Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip nearly 20 years ago – branding the previous expedition as the 'selfie yacht'. However, the human rights group Adalah, which was trying to assist the crew, said the interception breached international law. It said its lawyers were in Ashdod demanding to speak to the occupants of the vessel, including two French parliamentarians and two Al Jazeera journalists. 'The flotilla never entered Israeli territorial waters, nor was it intended to do so; it was headed toward the territorial waters of the State of Palestine, as recognised under international law,' Adalah said in a statement. 'Israel has no legal jurisdiction or authority over the international waters in which the vessel was sailing.' Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani spoke with his Israeli counterpart, foreign minister Gideon Sa'ar, regarding two Italians on board, Israel's foreign ministry said in a statement. It comes as Israel faces increasing international scrutiny about hunger levels in Gaza, with the United Nations and multiple foreign governments accusing it of failing to allow in adequate aid. In recent days, Israel has blamed the UN for failing to distribute aid that has been allowed through, claiming that around 1,000 trucks' worth is sitting waiting to be handed out. However, the international body says Israel places multiple practical restrictions on delivery. Airdrops taking place The Israeli Air Force also airdropped humanitarian aid over Gaza for the first time since the beginning of the war. Until now, other countries such as the UAE and the UK have airdropped food over the Strip during periods of the conflict, but Israel has not taken direct part in such operations. On Sunday two Jordanian and one Emirati plane dropped 25 tonnes of humanitarian aid over Gaza Strip, the Jordanian army said in a statement. The IDF said its aid distribution was carried out in co-ordination with international organisations and led by COGAT (Co-ordinator of the Government Activities in the Territories). The airdrops included seven packages of aid containing flour, sugar and canned food.

Mystery as girl, 3, found dead on Greek beach in early hours by horrified passerby as police investigate her identity
A YOUNG girl was found dead on a beach in Greece in the early hours of this morning. Police are working to identify the child, who is estimated to be about three years old. 2 2 The girl's body was found by a horrified passerby at around 4am, who immediately called the emergency services, according to reports. She was found on a beach in Palaio Faliro - around four miles from central Athens. Cops immediately rushed to the scene following the emergency call. An ambulance took her body to a nearby children's hospital. A post-mortem and autopsy are pending the establish the precise cause of death, has reported. According to the outlet, the child was wearing a full-length swimsuit with a zipper. However, she was not wearing a life jacket. There were also no obvious signs of abuse, the outlet reported. It is not known how the child ended up alone in the sea. Cops are working to find out the identity of the girl. No child matching her characteristics has been reported missing in the area. An investigation to establish the precise cause of the tragedy remains ongoing. It comes after a crew member on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship died after falling overboard. The alarm was reportedly sounded at around 7pm on Thursday - warning of a person overboard. They recovered from the water 30 minutes later after a huge search and rescue operation, but were sadly pronounced dead. A spokesperson told The Sun: "Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately the crew member passed away. "We extend our condolences to the crew member's family and loved ones. "To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share."
