Stokes' fitness, Pope's form and pace options – the questions facing England
There are just over three months until England arrive in Perth and the planning can now begin in earnest. Here, the PA news agency looks at five key questions England need to answer.
Will Ben Stokes be fully fit?
England are a completely different team when their inspirational captain is firing on all cylinders. He was in brilliant form this summer, rolling back the years with ball in hand, but missed the Kia Oval decider with a shoulder problem. A six-to-10-week lay-off will follow but any further setbacks would raise serious alarms. Having been struck down by knee, hip, hamstring and shoulder injuries in the past two years, is it too optimistic to expect him to be in peak condition throughout a gruelling tour?
What is the pace bowling pecking order?
England have talked up the importance of building deep reserves of fast bowlers but when the first Test kicks off in Perth they must be clear on their best combination. Jofra Archer looks certain to be in it after his long-awaited comeback, Mark Wood hopes to be back after missing the entire Test season, while Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton, Chris Woakes and Sam Cook all played this summer. Woakes looks like missing out with a dislocated shoulder, but how do the others stack up?
How do they get the best out of Ollie Pope?
A big hundred against Zimbabwe and another century in his first knock against India removed some of the questions that had been circling about Pope's spot at number three. But he finished the series averaging 34 and was 10th on the run-scoring charts. Jacob Bethell's disappointing effort in the fifth Test against India has weakened his case as a replacement but England need more from a senior player in a key position. Could taking the vice-captaincy off him and promoting white-ball skipper Harry Brook be part of the answer?
Is the spin situation settled?
A lot of faith has been placed in Shoaib Bashir, with England backing their hunch that he can do well in Australia. It has been a mixed bag so far, with 68 wickets in 19 Tests but a stubbornly high average of 39. His broken finger opened the door for them to have an overdue second look at Liam Dawson, but the county scene's standard-bearer was dropped after taking one for 140 at Old Trafford. Will he travel as competition for Bashir, could there be a return to Jack Leach or might England look at using all-pace attacks for some Ashes contests?
How will they prepare for the war of words?
Australian players, fans and media cheerleaders have been paying close attention to the India series and it is has not been hard to realise the long-range sledging has already started. From David Warner's recent jibe at Joe Root to the social media barrage about the merits, or otherwise, of 'Bazball', the heat is already rising. Expect that to continue all the way until Glenn McGrath shockingly predicts a 5-0 win for Australia. England have refused to entertain much Ashes talk in recent months but the temptation will rise as the weeks tick by. Will they fire some broadsides of their own or keep things on the field?

Swanage's Nash and Lewis impress with partnership in defeat to Hamworthy
ON SATURDAY, the Swanage 2ndXI travelled to Hamworthy for their latest Division 4 encounter. After losing the toss and being put into bat, the visitor's opening-pair of Mike Nash & John Lewis were determined to 'lay' a sound foundation to enable the middle-order to flourish later in the innings. They were able to do this by mixing solid defence with some ferocious drives and pull-shots - together they constructed a brilliant 120-run partnership, until in the 22nd over, Lewis was caught in the outfield attempting his ninth boundary for an excellent 48. Despite losing another wicket straight away, the momentum of the innings was maintained when the in-form Sid Nash joined Mike and they both continued to bat in a positive fashion. Mike was finally dismissed trying to hit his second maximum (to go along with his other 10 boundaries) for 77. Despite the fact wickets continued to fall, Sid batted very belligerently and, fittingly brought up his second consecutive half-century, with a 'towering' six into the pavilion. He was eventually dismissed off the final ball of the innings going for his 11th boundary for 66 off just 55 balls, but had enabled the visitors to reach the respectable total of 236-6 from their 40 overs. The hosts got-off to truly remarkable start, with their 'star' batsman reaching a half-century in just the 5th over. He continued to bat in this very aggressive manner reaching a quite simply astonishing century in only the 15th over. He was finally dismissed for a staggering 141 off just 74 balls - his remarkable innings included 26 boundaries and allowed the hosts to complete a convincing nine-wicket victory in just the 27th over. Despite this defeat, the visitors remain in third place in an incredibly competitive division and are still within touching distance of the top two. Also on Saturday, the 3rdXI continued their 'fight' against relegation in Division 5 when they hosted Wimborne 4thXI on the Nursery ground at Days Park. The visited batted first and, although Paul Knight - claimed 4 wickets and Tim Ives & Sam Willcocks claimed 3 and 2 wickets respectively the visitors managed to reach 237 before they were bowled-out. In reply, the hosts lost wickets at regular intervals and, although, David Alcock made 38 were in the very precarious position of 110-7 when he was dismissed. This brought together Geoff Willcocks & Matt. Dunster - who changed the complexion of the game completely with an unbelievable 108-run partnership in only 16 overs. Willcocks struck 11 boundaries (and lost 3 balls in the process) as he 'smashed' 67 off just 52 balls. He was ably supported by Dunster - who made an enterprising 31. However, there was still more nail-biting drama to come because as they were both removed in the same over to leave the hosts 219-9. As the game entered the last over - the hosts still needed 14 runs, they were indebted to Knight who struck two of the last four balls of the match to the boundary to secure a remarkable win for Dunster's side (to move them out of the relegation places). As well as that, the 1stXI played host to Martinstown in Premier Division 2. The hosts batted first and despite another half-century by the in-form Tom Wells (59) and some resistance from the lower-order of Nick Pestana, Freddie Long & Steve Ramsay, the hosts never recovered from 131-6 and were 'shot-out' for just 185. In reply, the visitors had few-alarms in reaching their target and, although Matt. Beard took two wickets in an-over - they completed a comfortable four-wicket victory. This defeat still leaves the hosts in a secure mid-table position.

Colchester United linked with swoop for former League One defender
COLCHESTER United have been linked with a move for left-back Ali Koiki. The U's, along with an unnamed League One club are interested in signing the London-born defender along with Cheltenham Town, according to Pete O'Rourke, transfer correspondent for Football Insider. Koiki, 25, is currently a free agent but is on trial at Cheltenham, as he looks to earn a contract for the 2025/26 season following his departure from Northampton Town, at the end of the last campaign. After initially starting out in Crystal Palace's academy, he was spotted playing for Kinetic Academy by Burnley, where he signed his first professional contract at the end of the 2017/18 season. Koiki did not make a senior appearance for the Clarets but during his time at Turf Moor, spent time on loan at Swindon Town where he played 15 league and cup games in the 2018/19 season. He left Burnley and joined Bristol Rovers in 2020 where he made five appearances in League One before departing to join Northampton in the summer of 2021. READ MORE: Clinton Morrison's view on Samson Tovide and Lyle Taylor Koiki spent four years with the Cobblers, making nearly 100 league and cup appearances and helping them secure promotion to League One in the 2022/23 season. The defender is now looking for a new challenge after he was released by the Cobblers, at the end of the previous campaign. Colchester are on the lookout for a new full-back following the departure of Mandela Egbo, earlier this summer. They completed the signing of Kane Vincent-Young last week but may well look to add further strength in depth, in the coming days.

New association gives players 'stronger voice'
A new, independent association for leading snooker players will give them "a stronger voice", according to its chairman John Higgins. The four-time world champion is a director of the Professional Snooker Players Association (PSPA) which says it is launching to "champion the sport", along with its leading names. "We feel as though we've not been listened to as we should have been in recent years", Higgins told BBC Sport. "The game has not moved forward with the times compared to other top sports. "Snooker deserves a strong, independent players' association that stands for fairness, transparency, and progress." The association also claims the governance of snooker "should factor in more of the views of the players". It has vowed to foster a "collaborative relationship" with the sport's authorities, including the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), the existing WPBSA Players' Board, and World Snooker Tour "to enhance the sport's future, while safeguarding player welfare and commercial interests". The PSPA says it has established a players board comprising of Judd Trump, Kyren Wilson, Mark Selby, Barry Hawkins, Shaun Murphy, Ali Carter, Gary Wilson, Stuart Bingham, Jack Lisowski, Stephen Maguire, Mark Allen, Ryan Day and Joe Perry. Another player - Matthew Selt - has been appointed a director, alongside lawyers Ben Rees and Mark Kenkre. The association also claims that seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan has agreed to become a member, along with Chinese stars Ding Junhui and Xiao Guodong. "I've had lots of discussions with Ronnie" said Higgins. "He's really excited about it, so it's full steam ahead." The fact so many of the top players are behind the new body suggests some feel they do not have enough say in the running of the World Snooker Tour (WST), particularly the commercial side. During the 2024 World Championship, the headlines at the Crucible were dominated by talk of a potential breakaway tour. This came after the game's top players were approached to play in lucrative events in China and North America as part of a potential breakaway circuit. Professional players sign a contract which does not allow them to compete in any outside events while WST tournaments are being played, unless they are events sanctioned by the WST, although players have recently negotiated more flexibility. However, the WST has been increasing the amount of prize money in the game, and is preparing to stage the sport's "fourth major" in Saudi Arabia with a prize pot of more than £2m. The second Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters will take place later this week in Jeddah. The WPBSA's own players' body was formed in 2020, and the governing body says it has "a specific mandate to act in the collective best interest of members in relation to welfare and issues affecting the professional game." It says that it "acts as a channel for member concerns and provides a platform whereby issues surrounding their wellbeing can be raised at the highest levels by the WPBSA Players Board." The PSPA says it has been formed with expert guidance from leading sports law professionals, and that its key objectives include legal and commercial support to protect players' rights in sponsorship, broadcasting, and contractual matters.
