Barc reports surge in viewership as 507 million tune in for news during Operation Sindoor
The Hindi news genre clocked GRPs (Gross Rating Point, a key metric that measures the total exposure of an advertisement to a target audience) of 254, as compared to 235 during the Lok Sabha elections last year, 211 during the multiple state elections of 2022, 185 during the Ram temple consecration ceremony followed by Republic Day, and 178 during the Pahalgam terror attack, Barc added.

Further, Hindi news also clocked the highest ATS (average time spent) of 60 minutes, an increase of 67% over the ATS of pre-Pahalgam weeks. The genre's share increased from 3% to 13% during the week. Daily tune-ins on Hindi news on critical days increased on the three critical days from 73 million to 142 million.
Hindi news viewers
Overall, 65 million new viewers (with respect to preceding weeks) tuned in to Hindi news. These new viewers had not sampled Hindi news in the last month, Barc added.
Besides, in the wake of Operation Sindoor, government fact-checking units swung into high alert to highlight and debunk misleading information on social and mainstream media, and set the record straight.
Their job multiplied as social media channels were flooded with unverified images of troop movements, doctored videos claiming to show missile launches, and misleading news about diplomatic escalations.

The news category commanded nearly a fifth of overall TV viewership at the beginning of the covid lockdown, thanks to a lack of fresh entertainment content and viewers' hunger for pandemic-related information. However, it fell to nearly 4% as the economy opened up, before rising back to 7.1% before the general election last year. The Ram temple pran pratishtha, or consecration ceremony, and Lok Sabha polling day, among others, were seen as tentpole events that led to a jump in viewership compared to a regular day, recently.

Haryana CM Saini says Rahul Gandhi's allegations on Arun Jaitley exposes his 'politics of lies'
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini criticised Rahul Gandhi's claim that late Arun Jaitley threatened him over farm laws, calling it 'laughable' and 'politics of lies,' since Jaitley died in 2019 and the laws came in 2020. The BJP accused Gandhi of twisting facts. Congress responded, saying the farm laws were part of a longer anti-farmer agenda. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini Sunday said Rahul Gandhi 's allegations against former finance minister Arun Jaitley on the farm laws issue expose the Congress leader's "lack of political understanding and his politics of lies".Addressing an event recently, Gandhi claimed that Arun Jaitley had threatened him to not speak against the farm laws, else he would face action, a charge rubbished by the BJP as "fake news"."The late Shri Arun Jaitley ji passed away in 2019, while the (now repealed) agricultural laws were introduced in 2020. Despite this, Rahul Gandhi is claiming that Jaitley ji came to threaten him not to oppose the agricultural laws."This statement by Rahul Gandhi is not only laughable but also exposes his lack of political understanding and his politics of lies. By fabricating falsehoods in the name of deceased leaders, he is trying to regain his lost credibility, which is extremely shameful and condemnable," the Haryana CM posted on X in Hindi Sunday added that people will not be "misled by such false statements".The BJP slammed Gandhi over the comments, saying he was rewriting timelines to "suit narratives".Congress leader Pawan Khera had responded, saying the farm laws of 2020 were the culmination of a long, deliberate, anti-farmer agenda of the BJP government In a post on X on Saturday, Khera, chief of Congress' media and publicity department, wrote: "For the uninitiated who have been jumping since the morning, sit down and listen: The Farm Laws of 2020 were not the only anti-farmer legislations of the BJP government. They were the culmination of a long, deliberate, anti-farmer agenda that the BJP government had been cooking up in its cauldron of destructive policy."He said the "first blow came in December 2014 itself, when Modi resorted to diluting the Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation Bill of 2013. Then in 2017 came the so-called Model Agricultural Produce and Livestock Marketing Act - another backdoor assault on farmers' rights".Khera said the Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi, "vehemently opposed these anti-farmer laws". It is in this context that the late Arun Jaitley came to 10 Janpath to meet Rahul Gandhi, carrying a threat, he claimed.

Reconciliation only solution to India-Pak tensions: Mehbooba Mufti
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday called for the revival of ties between India and Pakistan, stating that "reconciliation" is the only way forward to ease tensions. Responding to questions about the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the recent encounter in Kulgam, Mufti said, "Encounter used to happen and will always happen, but such a huge war took place before that. The ceasefire had to be declared later. Unless reconciliation, dialogue, debate and discussions are done, such encounters will go on, and we will always stay on the verge of war. Reconciliation is the only way forward." Terrorists killed 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22 in a brutal and heinous attack. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) in response. Meanwhile, security forces continue their operation in the Akhal Devsar area of south Kashmir's Kulgam district. One terrorist has been neutralised so far in the joint operation by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir police, CRPF, and the Special Operations Group (SOG). The encounter began on Saturday and continued overnight. A day earlier, ahead of the sixth anniversary of the revocation of Article 370, Mufti launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Central government, saying the policy to strip Jammu and Kashmir of its special status has "completely failed." "Six full years have passed since August 5, 2019. At that time, Jammu and Kashmir's special status was taken away, and Article 370 was revoked with the claim that everything would be fine in Jammu and Kashmir. But we have seen that the policy has completely failed," she told reporters. Mufti alleged that the internal situation in the region has deteriorated rather than improved, pointing to ongoing security crackdowns. "Internally, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is bad. For the past six years, arrests have been made daily. The situation in Jammu and Kashmir has become worse than before, although people are silent today. This is why our country has come into confrontation with Pakistan. What is Pakistan's stature? Their economy is not even a tenth of our economy, but today the whole world is comparing us with them," she said. The former Chief Minister also criticised what she termed the BJP's "aggressive policy" and its broader impact on regional diplomacy. "Unfortunately, the BJP has created such an atmosphere in the country that today all groups are saying, why did you agree to a ceasefire? This is the BJP's aggressive policy.

TMC furious after Delhi Police seeks translator for 'Bangladeshi language' Bangla, Mahua asks ‘how dare you'
A row erupted after the Trinamool Congress claimed Delhi Police has labelled Bangla as a "Bangladeshi language." In a letter shared on X, TMC shared a letter written by Delhi Police, seeking a translator for texts written in Bangladeshi. In a video on X, TMC MP Mahua Moitra also questioned the move and accused the Home Ministry of erasing one of the 22 official and 11 classical languages.(PTI) "The identification documents contain texts written in Bangladeshi and are needed to be translated to Hindi and English. Now, for the investigation to proceed further it is requested that an official translator/interpreter in Bangladeshi national language may kindly be provided," reads the letter issued from Lodhi Colony police station to Banga Bhawan. The letter, which has now been widely circulated on social media, has triggered backlash, mainly from the All India Trinamool Congress. TMC fumes at Delhi Police's letter "Bengali, our mother tongue, the language of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda, the language in which our National Anthem and the National Song (the latter by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay) are written, the language in which crores of Indians speak and write, the language which is sanctified and recognised by the Constitution of India, is now described as a Bangladeshi language!! " read a post shared by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. This row comes amid the ongoing dispute over third language in the country. The TMC has accused the Home Ministry of "delegitimising" one of the mother tongues of the country. In a video on X, TMC MP Mahua Moitra also questioned the move and accused the Home Ministry of erasing one of the 22 official and 11 classical languages. 'Bangla is spoken by 25 crore people globally. It is one of 22 constitutionally recognised languages in India... To call this a Bangladeshi language on official documentation is a calculated action. We demand an unconditional apology from the Delhi Police,' said Moitra on X. As TMC continues to fume over the letter, MP Kunal Ghosh has accused the BJP of pushing an anti-Bengali agenda. "@AmitShah's @DelhiPolice is deliberately targeting the Bengali language. By falsely branding Bengali as a "Bangladeshi language" — the @BJP4India is pushing its anti-Bengali agenda to DANGEROUS EXTREMES," the TMC MP was quoted as saying at a press conference on Sunday.
