Rep urges immediate relocation of schools affected by floods, infrastructure upgrades in Tamin
KUCHING (May 22): Several schools in the Tamin constituency may need to be relocated due to frequent flooding, said its assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang.
He emphasised that schools regularly affected by floods must be moved to safer, more strategic locations, adding that education is the foundation of progress, and no child should have their learning disrupted due to environmental challenges.
'This requires immediate action in identifying suitable areas, allocating funds, and fast-tracking construction to guarantee uninterrupted education for our future generations.
'I am appealing to government to relocate the schools namely, SK Ng Selangau, SK Kua Selangau, SK Sg Buluh and SK Pelugau,' he said in his Motion of Appreciation to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
Gira also called for the establishment of a Selangau District Education Office to better serve the needs of the local community.
In addition to education-related matters, he outlined several key development priorities for the Tamin constituency.
These included infrastructure upgrades, improved rural water and electricity supply, enhanced internet connectivity, and support for agriculture, housing, and youth development.
On infrastructure, he requested that several gravel roads be upgraded to tar-sealed roads. These include Jalan Sapudun Balingian Selangau, Jalan Ng Sekuau to SK Pakoh Ulu Oya Selangau, Jalan Ulu Selangau, and Jalan SK Pakoh to Jalan Ulu Bunau Oya.
On rural water supply, Gira appealed to the federal government to expedite the construction of the long-awaited Stapang/Sekuau water treatment plant, first announced in 2016 with an allocation of RM117 million.
He also urged the swift implementation of the RM200 million upgrade for the Selangau Water Treatment Plant, including pipe installation to designated areas.
Electricity supply remains inconsistent in some longhouses, with applications still pending under the Additional Late Applicant Fund (Alaf) programme.
Gira called for faster approval and an upgrade from single-phase to two-phase power in areas where demand exceeds capacity.
On digital connectivity, he pressed for all telecommunications towers built in Tamin to be made fully operational to help close the digital divide.
For the agricultural sector, Gira urged the government to provide support to oil palm, coffee, and rubber farmers through subsidies, training programmes, and financial assistance.
He also advocated for the speedy construction of the Selangau Mini Sports Complex and affordable housing projects in Selangau town to enhance community wellbeing.
To spur local tourism and recreation, Gira proposed the development of eco-tourism and leisure spots in Ulu Oya, Ulu Mukah, and Ulu Selangau.
In a bid to empower local talent and entrepreneurship, he called for the creation of a Craft Centre and SME Hub in Selangau to support artisans and small business owners.
Gira also voiced concern over rising drug abuse and illegal online gambling, particularly among youth, urging authorities to implement effective preventive measures.
Lastly, he highlighted the importance of completing the Survey of Native Customary Rights (NCR) land to safeguard indigenous ownership.

'These were not holiday jaunts but targeted, high-level engagements to explore and secure partnerships that could elevate Sarawak's healthcare landscape,' said Kua. Talks were also held with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to set up Malaysia's first CDC collaborative office in Sarawak. The initiative is intended to strengthen epidemic preparedness and public health surveillance. Additionally, engagements with Swiss pharmaceutical firms Roche and Novartis could pave the way for the state's first-in-human clinical research, positioning Sarawak as a future regional medical research hub. Kua also claimed that Democratic Action Party (DAP) leaders were 'opposing or downplaying' such efforts, thereby undermining Sarawak's healthcare progress. 'Why does DAP keep sabotaging Sarawak's move forward in healthcare?' he asked, defending Dr Sim's record of delivering rural health initiatives such as mobile clinics, flying doctor teams, digital health services, and the Health White Paper. He pointed out that over RM200 million in state funds had been allocated to upgrade healthcare facilities in remote districts such as Kapit, Lawas, and Limbang. Kua challenged DAP's 40 MPs to explain their lack of support for Sarawak's push for healthcare autonomy and questioned if they had done anything to secure better federal allocations. 'If federal healthcare delivery is failing, as Violet Yong herself admits, then what have DAP MPs done to fix it? 'Have they supported Sarawak's push for healthcare autonomy? Have they secured more federal health allocations for Sarawak? 'Have they ever tabled a motion in Parliament to reform the broken healthcare system they now criticise?' he asked. 'Sarawak needs builders, not noise-makers. Improving public health requires serious leadership, strategic engagement, and the courage to act, not just taking selfies or shouting in press releases,' he stressed. 'Save the Malayan Tiger' campaign raises RM2.1mil since 2021
SHAH ALAM: Contributions to the 'Save the Malayan Tiger' campaign have reached RM2.1 million since its launch in 2021, says acting Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He said the donations were made possible through cooperation with various strategic partners, including the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), to raise funds and awareness on the importance of Malayan tiger conservation. "So far, FAM has contributed about RM200,000 to the Save the Malayan Tiger Campaign Fund through proceeds from football match ticket sales. Once again, I would like to thank FAM," he said here today. Also present were Peninsular Malaysia Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director-general Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim and FAM president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub. Johari, who is also the plantation and commodities minister, said this in a speech delivered by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii when officiating the national-level Global Tiger Day celebration, held annually on July 29. Meanwhile, Johari said the Cabinet had, on June 16, 2021, agreed to implement extraordinary strategic actions for Malayan tiger conservation over a 10-year period from 2021 to 2030. He said these actions encompassed three approaches, namely, intensifying efforts to halt population decline, improving governance and implementation effectiveness in conservation, and strengthening initiatives to ensure the long-term survival of the Malayan tiger. "Monitoring conducted by Perhilitan with support from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has shown a rise in the Malayan tiger population. "This is a positive indicator of the success of ongoing efforts, including habitat conservation through international accreditation and recognition schemes," he said. In addition, Johari said Malaysia was currently working to secure 'Conservation Assured Tiger Standards' accreditation for Taman Negara in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan, as well as Endau Rompin National Park. Kampung Melayu Bukit Batu Residents Celebrate Completion Of Long-awaited Drainage Project
KULAI, July 26 (Bernama) -- Residents of Kampung Melayu Bukit Batu, who have battled persistent flooding for the past decade, can now breathe easier as the construction of a concrete U-drain has been completed. Kulai Member of Parliament Teo Nie Ching said the 190-metre-long concrete drain, which began construction in June, was funded with an allocation of RM200,000. The project was designed to improve drainage and enhance water flow in the area. "This funding, sourced through my office as the MP for Kulai, comes from both the Ministry of Rural Development (KKDW) and the Ministry of Economy. The upgraded drainage system aims to address the flooding issues that have long troubled the residents here," Teo said after inspecting the completed drain in Kampung Melayu Bukit Batu. The area, which has experienced frequent flooding for the last ten years, faced four floods this year alone due to its low-lying terrain. Earlier this year, in April, residents urged the authorities to take immediate action to address the flash floods, which have become a monthly occurrence since the beginning of the year. Several residents attribute the recurring floods to a poor drainage system, which has disrupted daily life for over 50 households and caused extensive damage to property. Juliana Boonadir, 43, a clinic manager, expressed relief at the completion of the new drainage system, calling it a long-awaited solution. "We've been hoping for a solution to reduce the risk of flooding. Every time the floods hit, so many of our belongings are damaged. While there's help, the losses are still considerable. This year has been the worst—four floods in the first three months alone. This new drain will be a great help," she said. Retiree Razman Hamzah, 64, commended the government for its commitment to addressing local flooding problems, noting that the new drain would help mitigate the damage caused by floods.
