Cafaro Foundation donates millions toward YSU Kilcawley Center renovation
Kilcawley Center closed Monday, just after graduation weekend, for the start of renovations, which are expected to take more than two years to complete. Some updates include a new black-box theater, a revamped Chestnut Room for large gatherings, flexible meeting rooms, a new dining area, and indoor and outdoor areas.
The project is anticipated to come with a $50 million price tag, covered by loans and aided by donations that keep coming.
This donation puts the Cafaro family into YSU's highest notable giving society, the Penguin Pinnacle, which accounts for contributions to the university from donors of $5 million or greater.
'We are thankful and deeply grateful for the Cafaro family's continued support of our university,' said YSU President Bill Johnson. 'This gift reflects their dedication to YSU's student community and further acknowledges their belief in the critical role YSU plays in the social, cultural, and economic vitality of our region.'
The Cafaros' support for YSU dates to the 1960s. William M. Cafaro was a key advocate for Youngstown University becoming a state public university in 1968. He also was one of the founders and one of the first board members of the YSU Foundation.
Other significant contributors include former university president Jim Tressel and his wife Ellen, alumnus Dr. George Young, The Hynes Finnegan Foundations, Board of Trustees member Joe Kerola and his wife Pam, The John S. and Doris M. Andrews Memorial Fund, and more.
YSU's website includes a breakdown of the project, a timeline of what will be closed when and where offices have been relocated.

New Youngstown resident wins $300K lottery prize
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A woman from Youngstown is richer after winning the jackpot in an Ohio Lottery scratch-off game. The woman won the top prize of $300,000 on the game Special Edition Cashword. The ticket was sold in January. The winner is originally from New Jersey but moved to Youngstown with her fiancé for his job in late 2024, according to the Ohio Lottery Commission. The woman told lottery officials that her fiancé bought her five $5 scratch-offs at a gas station, and she won $15. She left to visit family in New Jersey and when she got back, she ended up spending her winnings on three more tickets at Certified Oil on North Canfield Niles Road in Austintown. 'Something told me to get three Cashwords,' she told the commission. One of the tickets was the $300,000 winner, but she thought she had only won $5,000 because she couldn't find the 10th word in the game, so she scanned the ticket and the app showed the message, 'Congratulations! You won $300,000!' The woman said she plans to use the winnings to go on vacation and treat her fiancé. After mandatory state and federal taxes totaling 28%, she will receive $216,000. Wealthy steel magnate and family killed after their plane crashed in Ohio moments after takeoff
A wealthy steel magnate and his family were the victims killed in a plane crash in Ohio — after their twin-engine aircraft went down just minutes after taking off for their vacation to Montana. James 'Jim' Weller, 67, owner of Liberty Steel Industries Inc; his wife Veronica, 68; their son John, 36; and daughter-in-law Maria, 34; were traveling to Bozeman, Montana when the Cessna they were traveling in suddenly went down, WMFJ reports. The pilot, Joseph Maxin, 63 and co-pilot, 55-year-old Timothy Blake, were also killed when the plane crash just seven minutes after taking off from Youngstown Regional Airport on Sunday. Seized cars, former police vehicles up for auction in Pa.
(WKBN) – Approximately 400 used vehicles, including former state police vehicles, will be up for auction during the Commonwealth Auction next week. The Pennsylvania Department of General Services' Bureau of Vehicle Management (BVM) announced that the auction is open to the public and will take place on Tuesday, June 17, at 10 a.m. at Manheim Keystone Pennsylvania, located at 488 Firehouse Road in Grantville. An in-person preview of vehicles begins on Saturday, June 14, and will run through Monday, June 16. Previews will take place each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Grantville auction site. Vehicle offerings will include a variety of 4-wheel drive SUVs, utility vehicles, and pickup trucks, as well as front and all-wheel drive sedans and minivans. This auction will also feature numerous vehicles seized by state law enforcement agencies. Pre-registration is mandatory for the auction and must be completed on or before 4 p.m. Monday, June 16. The auction will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17. Buyers must make purchases with cash, a money order, a cashier's check or a certified check made payable to 'Cox Automotive.'
