German president pledges support to maintain Lithuania's freedom

Qatar Tribunea day ago
VilniuscTypeface:> German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier pledged his country's support in maintaining Lithuanian freedom during a visit to Vilnius to attend national day celebrations on Sunday.
'With the stationing of a German brigade in Lithuania, we are making a lasting promise: Your security is our security,' Steinmeier said at the celebrations.
He later plans to visit the headquarters of the German armoured brigade in Lithuania, which is preparing for the unit's deployment to the country.
'This brigade represents mutual responsibility and loyalty to the alliance, as we know that whoever defends Lithuania defends Europe and defends Europe's values. And that is what you do, dear Lithuanians, every day,' Steinmeier said.
From 2027, around 5,000 soldiers of the German armoured brigade are to be permanently stationed in Lithuania to protect the Baltic country against threats from Russia and strengthen NATO's eastern flank. (DPA)

New Romanian premier Bolojan links austerity plans to vote of confidence

Bucharest: New Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has tied a vote of confidence in parliament to a stringent austerity programme just two weeks after taking office. If no faction submits a motion of no confidence within three days, Bolojan's programme will be considered adopted without further voting. Should a motion of no confidence be submitted and accepted by a parliamentary majority, the conservative prime minister will be deemed ousted and his programme rejected. The far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) faction has hinted at submitting a motion of no confidence but would need votes from potential defectors within the ruling camp to secure a majority. President Trump hits back at Elon Musk's ‘ridiculous' America Party plans

WashingtoncTypeface:> US President Donald Trump has hit back at his former adviser, tech billionaire Elon Musk, over plans to form a new political party. 'I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely 'off the rails,' essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks,' Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday. 'He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States - The System seems not designed for them.' Earlier on Sunday, Trump told reporters Musk's plan was 'ridiculous' and touted the 'tremendous success' of the Republicans. Musk said on Saturday that he had decided to form his own US political party, naming it 'America Party.' (DPA)

Von der Leyen attacks far right over no-confidence

dpa Strasbourg, France European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday rejected allegations included in an upcoming no-confidence motion against her in the European Parliament. The no-confidence motion was initiated by a far-right Romanian lawmaker. Von der Leyen and her team are accused of a lack of transparency and mismanagement, particularly concerning COVID-19 policy. Regarding accusations about unpublished text messages during the Coronavirus crisis, she said she had never made a secret of the fact that she was in contact with senior representatives of vaccine manufacturers at the time. She said that claiming these contacts were inappropriate or even against European interests was simply false. There were no secrets, no hidden clauses, and no obligation for individual member states to place orders, she stressed. She said that such claims were lies. In response to criticism that she planned a multibillion-euro loan programme for defence investments as an emergency measure without parliamentary involvement, von der Leyen said this was exactly what she had promised in her political guidelines. She said she would seek feedback from parliament for every further step along the way. 'I want to say that I hear your concerns loud and clear. I will always be ready to be open about our work and find common solutions with pro-European, pro-democratic forces in this house,' she said.
