Australian football rocked by alleged A-Leagues corruption scandal

7NEWS01-06-2025
Two Melbourne men, including a Western United footballer, have been charged with a combined 26 offences relating to alleged gambling corruption in the A-Leagues season.
The pair will face court after detectives from the Victoria Police Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit charged a 24-year-old West Melbourne man and a 27-year-old Kingsville man on Sunday with numerous offences including use of corrupt conduct for betting purposes.
Both were bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 31.
While the individuals are yet to be publicly named, it is understood one of the men is a player at Western United and the other is a state leagues player.
The Australian Professional Leagues, who run the A-League competitions, confirmed a player had been charged.
'The Australian Professional Leagues is aware that one A-League player has been charged by Victorian Police with offences related to gambling,' a spokesperson said.
'The integrity of our sport is something that has to be protected without compromise, and we are engaging with all relevant authorities to assist with this matter.'
In a statement, a Football Australia spokesperson said it took the integrity of the game extremely seriously and was fully cooperating with external authorities.
'Football Australia has taken swift action today to impose 'no-fault interim suspensions' to the two individuals charged, and those suspensions will remain in place until further notice,' the statement said.
Police allege four matches in April and May 2025 were the subject of 'player to be carded' wagering manipulation.
Western United has been contacted for comment.
It comes a year after the captain of Sydney club Macarthur FC was accused of paying two younger team mates up to $10,000 to deliberately receive yellow cards in a scheme allegedly masterminded by a South American connection.
Celebrated team leader Ulises Davila and fellow players Kearyn Baccus and Clayton Lewis have been charged over a betting fix police say has led to hundreds of thousands of dollars being paid out in winnings.

NBA rookie Tyrese Proctor to bring NRL to Cleveland Cavaliers locker room

Meet rugby league's latest - and biggest - recruitment tool that is ready to attract even more Americans to the NRL. Australia's NBA draft pick Tyrese Proctor and avid Cronulla Sharks fan has vowed to bring his love for the NRL to the Cleveland Cavaliers locker room, when he commences his journey on the world's best basketball stage later this year. Proctor, who grew-up in the Sutherland Shire and is a passionate Cronulla fan, has even suggested including a 'Sharks fin' celebration when he starts delivering his trademark three-pointers for the Cavs next season. 'I already spoke to my guys at the Sutherland Sharks (basketball team), where I played my whole junior career, about that being the plan,' Proctor said. 'I came to a lot of games here (Sharks Stadium) and sat in the same seats each game with my uncle and watched the likes of Paul Gallen and Wade Graham play and the physicality they play with, they're all professionals and that's something I want to instill. 'I'll be trying to show my teammates rugby league. I remember for last year's State of Origin game two, a lot of the boys at Duke started watching it with me at breakfast and we all tuned into it. 'I'll be doing my best to get the Sharks games live streamed.'' The six-foot-four 21-year-old scored a dream contract with the Cavs during this year's NBA Draft after three standout years at revered Duke University in North Carolina. The Aussie guard penned a four-year $13.2 million deal with the Cavs after the team selected him with the 49th pick. After swapping jerseys with Sharks players on Thursday, Proctor will attend Cronulla's home game against the Cowboys in the Shire on Sunday before leaving for the US next month to commence his lifelong basketball dream. He said he has taken advice from good friend, Bendigo-born and Atlanta Hawks guard, Dyson Daniels on managing the pressure, spotlight and intense expectation of the NBA. 'I'm best friends with Dyson Daniels, he came off a great year and I'm always talking to him about different things that come with the game, on and off the court,' Proctor said. 'I'm definitely keeping my feet on the ground, managing your money is very important. 'You make so much money, you can lose it just as quickly, so I'm going to have the right people around me and use it in the right way. 'You see a lot of the guys that come in and out of the NBA so quickly and I'm really honoured to be able to sign that contract and I definitely have plans to get my second contract and continue to stick in the NBA.' Proctor believes the Cavs are the perfect club for him to build and become a polished NBA player. He can't wait to play alongside the likes of Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland and Evan Mobley and compete for a title. Brisbane Roar keen to shine in trial against A-League heavyweights

Brisbane Roar star Jay O'Shea says an early pre-season test against Auckland FC is just what his hungry teams needs in the absence of competitive Australia Cup games. For the second year in succession, the Roar failed to qualify for the Australia Cup after again losing in playoffs involving the bottom four A-League teams from the previous season. O'Shea said the absence of competitive matches, particularly against top-flight opposition, hurt the Roar in the build-up to the club's miserable 2024-25 A-League campaign. 'We didn't play against any A-League opposition before the season started, so it was hard to gauge where we were at,' the Irish midfielder said. 'We probably got caught cold going into the season.' Eager to avoid a similar scenario ahead of the club's 2025-26 season, Roar officials took advantage of Auckland being in Queensland this week for an Australia Cup round-of-32 clash against Gold Coast Knights to organise a meeting with the reigning Premier's Plate winners on Sunday at Imperial Corp Stadium, the home of NPL outfit Brisbane City. 'It'll be a good game to see where we're at, coming up against last season's premiers. It'll be a good test for us,' said O'Shea, who added that there was a 'good feeling' at the club under new coach Michael Valkanis. 'It's been really good. We've got some new faces in the door who look really impressive, and I don't think we're done yet. The club will still be bringing a few more players in.' New Roar signings expected to be involved on Sunday include goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis, Kiwi left-back James McGarry, former Swiss and Bosnian youth international midfielder Milorad Stajic, and attackers Michael Ruhs and Justin Vidic. Another of Brisbane's new faces, English striker Chris Long, won't be involved as he doesn't arrive in Queensland until Sunday night. Auckland is in good form heading into the contest after reaching the Cup round-of-16 with a midweek 4-0 win over the Knights.
