Diogo Jota Fatal Crash: Initial Findings Show Footballer Was Speeding Behind the Wheel
Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva died in a fatal car accident, while reportedly driving over the speed limit.
A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil of Zamora said that Jota was driving the car at the time of the accident, according to tests conducted during the initial investigation.
The Independent quoted the spokesperson as saying: 'Everything also points to a possible high excess of speed over the permitted speed of the road.'
The final report of the crash has yet to be finalized, the source said.
Last week, Liverpool announced the devastating news that Jota and Sila were found dead in the crashed car near the Spanish city.
In a tragic development, the accident took place just 10 days after Jota married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he shares three children.
Following the devastating news, Liverpool announced it would retire the No. 20 jersey to honor the forward's legacy at the club.

Women's Euro 2025: Italy vs Spain
Italy will face their biggest test yet at Women's Euro 2025 when they meet Spain today, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. The Azzurre are aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2013, having crashed out in the group stage in the past two editions. They sit second in Group B with four points, following a narrow win over Belgium and a late draw with Portugal, but they'll need at least a point to be progress. Cristiana Girelli's stunning strike had looked to seal all three points against Portugal, only for an 89th-minute equaliser to delay Italy's passage to the next round. They remain three points ahead of third-placed Portugal, and their superior goal difference means only a heavy defeat – coupled with a big Portuguese win over Belgium – would knock them out. Spain, meanwhile, have already qualified for the quarter-finals and only need a draw to finish top of the group. Montse Tomé's side have been in devastating form, scoring 11 goals in two matches – 5-0 against Portugal and 6-2 against Belgium. Alexia Putellas stole the show last time out, becoming the first player to score twice and provide two assists in a single Women's Euro match. La Roja's attacking trio of Putellas, Esther González, and Claudia Pina have been in high-flying form. However, Spain could rotate. With a knockout tie looming, Tomé may rest players on yellow cards, including defenders Laia Aleixandri and Ona Batlle. Goalkeeper Cata Coll is also in contention to return after missing the first two matches due to illness. Italy boss Andrea Soncin is expected to stick with the side that started the opening two games. Roma's Elena Linari should anchor a back three alongside Juventus duo Cecilia Salvai and Martina Lenzini. Girelli, who has four goals in her last five outings, will once again lead the line. But Soncin may be tempted to go more defensive, given Spain's firepower. He'll also have one eye on suspensions – four Italian players, including Lenzini and Manuela Giugliano, are a booking away from missing the quarter-finals. Score Prediction: The last time these two met, Italy stunned Spain 3-2 in the Nations League last December. Repeating that feat now, though, will require a monumental performance. Hakimi Ignored, Dembélé Adored – Spanish Media Pick Their Favorite
Ousmane Dembélé, we're told, is destined to win the Ballon d'Or. Marca seems convinced. PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi is borderline campaigning for his winger. And yet, Morocco's Achraf Hakimi – who's had a spectacular season that redefined what it means to be a defender – is laughably ignored. One begins to suspect this is less about football, more about feelings. Spanish feelings. Let's start with Marca. The Madrid-based daily wrote today: 'Ousmane Dembélé took another step toward winning the 2025 Ballon d'Or,' after his goal against Real Madrid. They trumpeted his stats – 35 goals and 15 assists. Not one mention of the Moroccan who's played every bit as decisive a role in each of PSG's glittering season so far – and done so from right-back. One wonders what Marca is playing at. Supporting a Frenchman is fair game. But ignoring the man raised on Spanish pitches and educated in La Fábrica? That's either poor memory or a thinly veiled grudge. Is it still about that night in Qatar, when Hakimi coolly chipped the ball past Unai Simón, danced in penguin style, and sent Spain packing from the World Cup? Or earlier, when he turned his back on La Roja to represent the Atlas Lions? Whatever it is, Marca's editorial compass is clearly unbiased. When asked who he would pick to win the award, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi was blunt. 'If Ousmane Dembélé doesn't win the Ballon d'Or, there's a problem! Given the season he's had – a magnificent campaign – there's no doubt he should win…If he doesn't, something's wrong.' Let's talk facts now. Hakimi, mind you, is the man who 'has continually pushed the limits of his position,' according to French sports magazine Onze Mondial. He has now broken the 14-year-old record held by Dani Alves for most goal contributions by a defender in a single season – 27, with one more game to go against Chelsea in the final of the Club World Cup. He even scored the opener in the Champions League final against Inter – the goal that opened the floodgates for a Milanese thrashing. Eurosport had at least the decency to call a spade a spade: 'Hakimi is not just a footballer – he's a phenomenon. A defender who plays like a forward, dictates like a midfielder, and defends with old-school grit – 'a lateral total', they called him. Rightly so. And yet, in this year's Ballon d'Or narrative, he's been relegated to a supporting act – when, in truth, he's defied all odds from the defensive department and orchestrated victories all season coming from the back. If football's most prestigious award is truly about merit, influence, and the ability to redefine a position, then there's no clearer candidate than the boy from Oued Zem. But perhaps the most cutting line came from Eurosport: 'Hakimi's biggest weakness is being a defender. At least on paper.' In truth, his only real offence is playing at the back – and not being French enough to receive a Frenchie award. Tags: Achraf HakimiBallon D'orFranceMARCAOusmane DembelePSGSpain

Real Madrid Close in on Alvaro Carreras
Real Madrid are on the verge of signing Spanish left-back Álvaro Fernández Carreras from Benfica in a deal that will also see 21-year-old Castilla defender Rafael Obrador head to Lisbon, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The agreement is expected to be finalised this week, with both moves registered as separate transfers. Carreras, 22, has a $50 million release clause in his contract. Initially, Madrid were expected to trigger it – which would have handed Manchester United a 20%sell-on fee, as agreed when they sold the full-back to Benfica last summer. Instead, Madrid will pay a lower cash fee and allow Obrador to join Benfica, effectively reducing the headline price while complying with FIFA rules that part-exchange valuations must reflect fair market value. Carreras left Old Trafford on loan in January 2024. He has helped Benfica in the Champions League knock-out rounds and triggered an obligation-to-buy clause after playing more than half the club's matches. Benfica completed the permanent deal last June for an initial $7.5m, which included United's sell-on and a $16 million buy-back option valid until 2026. Since arriving in Portugal, Carreras has impressed. He made 68 appearances across all competitions, scored 5 goals and 5 assists while clocking over 5,000 minutes of game time. Known for his progressive passing and intelligent positioning, the Spanish defender offers both defensive stability and attacking intent. Real Madrid have been in the market for a new left-back, with Ferland Mendy placed on the transfer list. Carreras has done enough to convince the club's technical staff that he is the right fit. Paperwork on both transfers is expected to be signed in the coming days. Once the fees are lodged with FIFA's Transfer Matching System, Manchester United will learn exactly how much they will recoup from the Benfica-Madrid deal.
