A drummer and green card holder for a Texas-based band was removed from a flight by federal immigration officials on Monday before the band was set to depart for a European tour.
Yamal Said, a member of the heavy Americana band Lord Buffalo, was detained at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents who said they had a warrant for his arrest after he allegedly violated a restraining order at least twice, the Department of Homeland Security said on X.
Violating a protective order two or more times can lead to it becoming a felony in Texas, based on the circumstances.
"Yamal Said is a Mexican national and lawful U.S. permanent resident," the agency wrote on X sharing a news headline about the incident.

"Said had a warrant for his arrest after violating a restraining order at least TWICE. If you come to our country and break our laws, you will be arrested. When he was attempting to leave the U.S., he was apprehended by CBP and has been turned over to local law enforcement."

The exact nature of the protective order has not been made public. Said is currently being held at the Tarrant County Corrections Center.
Said moved to the U.S. in the 1980s after a devastating earthquake hit Mexico City, Voyage Austin previously reported. He has been the band's drummer for the last eight years and teaches music for Texas School for the Blind based in Austin, the outlet reported.

Paul Carlson, assistant principal at the school, remarked that Said is "a highly respected and long-serving member of our school community," the Austin Chronicle reported.
Said's detention forced the band to announce on social media that it had canceled its tour.
"We appreciate the tremendous outpouring of support from y'all today. We still know very little about the situation, but we have been asked by our drummer's family and his legal team to respect their privacy while this situation evolves," the band wrote.
The band had been preparing for an eight-date European tour in support of their latest album, "Holus Bolus," with Norwegian band Orsak:Oslo, the Austin Chronicle reported.
"No one should be pulled off a plane and jailed for simply trying to travel and make art with their band," Orsak:Oslo wrote on social media Wednesday. "We won't pretend to understand the full complexity of the situation, but this should not happen anywhere."Original article source: Drummer detained by CBP before flight to Europe for band's tour

Fight at Amarillo school gym during men's basketball game leads to arrests, gun scare

A weekend men's league basketball game turned violent Sunday afternoon when a fight broke out during a tournament at Rolling Hills Elementary School, leading to two arrests and a gun being drawn, according to the Potter County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said the incident occurred around 2:40 p.m. during the second half of a game. A fight between players escalated when one man was knocked unconscious. An off-duty deputy participating in the tournament intervened, breaking up the altercation and providing medical aid. While attempting to control the chaotic scene, the deputy witnessed another man leave the gym, retrieve a firearm from his vehicle and re-enter the building. The deputy was able to disarm and detain the man before further violence occurred, authorities said. Two men were arrested at the scene. The man who was knocked unconscious was transported to the hospital by ambulance. Charges are pending for that individual, according to the sheriff's office. The two men in custody are facing charges of assault and unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place. Rolling Hills Elementary School, located at 2800 W. Cherry Ave. in north Amarillo, is part of the River Road Independent School District and typically serves students in grades 2 through 5. The tournament was held on the school's campus during non-instructional hours. No names or descriptions have been released due to the ongoing investigation. The incident remains under investigation by the Potter County Sheriff's Office. Student's Cell Phone Sought In Elgin ISD Coach Sex Solicitation Investigation

(Texas Scorecard) – Prosecutors are seeking cell phone evidence in a case against a Central Texas high school basketball coach accused of sexual misconduct with a female student. Devin Ryan Anderson, 27, was arrested last December on charges of improper relationship between educator and student and possession of child pornography while he was working for Elgin Independent School District. Both charges are felonies punishable by at least two years in prison. 'Improper relationship' includes sexual contact or sexually explicit communication with a student, regardless of the student's age. In February, a Gregg County grand jury indicted Anderson on the charges. The indictment accused Anderson of soliciting the student for sex via text messages and possessing pornographic images of a minor. Last week Anderson appeared in court for a hearing during which prosecutors told District Judge Alfonso Charles they believe the victim's cellphone may contain evidence relevant to the case. Judge Charles directed prosecutors to request that the victim turn over the phone to the Kilgore Police Department. Anderson remains free after posting a $55,000 bond. State records show Anderson's teaching certificate, issued in 2022, remains valid but is under review by the Texas Education Agency. According to his LinkedIn page, Anderson began working at Elgin High School in August 2024 as a world geography teacher, assistant basketball coach, and head boys' cross country coach. Elgin ISD officials said Anderson was placed on administrative leave after his arrest. He is no longer employed by the district. Anderson previously worked as a basketball coach and PE teacher at Cumberland Academy in Tyler in the 2023-24 school year, and as an assistant football and basketball coach and special education inclusion teacher for Taylor ISD in 2022-23. He is among hundreds of Texas school employees accused of sex crimes involving students and other children in just the past few years.
