Murderbot – Season 1 Episode 7 Recap & Review

Episode 7 of Murderbot begins with us at Port Freecommerce, one month earlier. It's the eve of the Chatterjee memorial lecture and Gurathin immediately lowers the mood when he admits that he was a corporation spy. His target is Mensah and he's sick of lying to everyone. He even wants to end his life. This is why he moved to the Preservation Alliance, to get away from everything.
Outside, Gurathin admits that he's nervous about this new expedition and he's not sure it's a god idea. He's also nervous about the SecUnit joining them.
Back in the present, the group are still reeling after LeeBeeBee's death. Murderbot is adamant that they need to move, and he tries a softer approach than his initial stern hook, which actually works surprisingly well.
The group leave the base, jumping onboard the hopper, but they're still not sure whether they can trust Murderbot or not. As they weigh up their options, so too does our titular character. It wonders whether to just leave them to it, or even sit around and watch Sanctuary Moon until its battery runs out.
Eventually both sides hash out their issues, with Mensah explaining that she looks at Murderbot as someone trying to help. She wants it to have that same feeling and look at them favourably, but their chat is interrupted.
Hostile creatures surround the hopper, but they're not actually fighting, they're mating. Both Gurathin and Murderbot contemplate whether to just electrify the hull, but the humans refuse.
Unfortunately, the creatures also leave eggs all over the ship. There are bigger problems though, when another SecUnit shows up and jams the assessment threat for our Murderbot.
When the hostile SecUnit destroys some of the eggs, one of the creatures arrives and absolutely obliterates it, ripping its head off. Thankfully it doesn't attack Preservation Society, who stand and watch as the centipede-esque creature grabs the eggs and heads underground.
Gurathin is not in a good state though, and as he collapses on the ground, the group decide to take him back to the habitat, despite the risks and the potential hostiles crawling round the area.
The Episode Review
Murderbot returns with another good episode this week, zeroing in on the threat the group are facing and presenting this hostile SecUnit as another of the company's minions looking to take the group down.
There's some pretty good questions about morality in here too, namely that of the two creatures mating and whether to kill them or not. While the humans all have empathy and decide this isn't a good idea, the androids – namely Murderbot and Gurathin – both think they should kill them.
It's a nice way of presenting the difference in machine and human thinking, and it works well to add a slightly more dramatic side to what's otherwise only really been explored through the lens of comedy.
This has been a good watch though and it'll be interesting to see where this one goes next.

It comes after Guy recently recalled the time he was held at gunpoint by multiple police officers in Los Angeles for suspicion of grand theft auto. The Australian singer said a knee was placed on his body while a gun pressed his face into 'wet concrete'. During an interview on Nova's Smallzy's Surgery with Kent 'Smallzy' Small in April, Guy recounted his terrifying ordeal. The incident, which occurred in 2011 when Guy was living and working in the United States at age 29, was confirmed by his management to Sydney Morning Herald at the time. 'I was living at Ian Thorpe's house in LA. I was just renting it for a while,' the singer began. 'I parked my car there, literally in the driveway, and I came back and it was gone.' Guy told radio host Smallzy his car - 'bought on eBay' - was illegally towed by a dodgy company and taken to an undisclosed location without telling him. The company was attempting to exploit a loophole in the law, which allowed them to sell impounded cars if they were not claimed by the owner within three months. 'Police told me the car had been taken by a tow company. So I'm going from tow company to tow company, over three or four weeks,' Guy said. 'Eventually I went to the police for the third time, after I'd been to 20 or 30 tow companies. I said it's a needle in a haystack. So they marked it as stolen which alerted the tow company. 'I go to pick it up and they charge me $4,000USD. It's a scam that they do.' Guy had been renting the Australian Olympic swimmer's two-bedroom hideaway in the Hollywood Hills, located behind West Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard. Upon picking up his car from the impound lot, Guy called police to notify them that the car was no longer missing or stolen. After 45 minutes of being left on hold, Guy decided to drive to a local car wash while he waited to speak to police. 'I pick up this car. It's all damaged from the tow thing. I'm livid. I hop in this car and head down to the car wash because the sheriff is up the road,' he continued. 'I thought, "Bugger it, I'll go there after I wash this car". Didn't think anything of it. One police car pulls up in the next wash bay. 'I'm still on the phone to the sheriff and I see another one pulls up. Next minute there's eight or nine cops with their guns drawn, screaming: "SHUT UP AND GET ON THE GROUND!"' The car was still showing in the police system as stolen, as Guy had yet to get through to change that status. 'I'm on Bluetooth in my car and one cop pulls the phone out and throws the phone, smashing it. It was like a movie,' Guy said, able to laugh about the incident now. Guy attempted to notify officers that it was a misunderstanding and that he had the correct paperwork on the front seat and was on hold to police, but they refused to let him talk. 'He actually had the gun pressed into my forehead. It was full on. I could feel the metal of the gun,' Guy said, as another officer apparently told him to 'relax'. 'I was telling them it's my car. They wouldn't hear it. They put me in cuffs, pushing my face into this wet concrete.' Guy said he was eventually let go after his paperwork was checked and cleared, and said he understood why the police needed to act the way they did.

Murderbot – Season 1 Episode 8 Recap & Review
Foreign Object Episode 8 of Murderbot begins with more Sanctuary Moon, as Nav Seven is under the command of the new Captain… or is it? The bot goes mad, sabotaging the ship, getting them stuck in an event horizon and killing everybody onboard. Murderbot is snapped back to reality when we learn Gurathin is not doing well. His temperature is spiking and even worse, when they check the surveillance logs, they find three SecUnits at their habitat. Doing some research, they find out that the bots actually originate from a Mining Company called GrayCris. They're the ones who destroyed the beacon and they also happen to be working with LeeBeeBee. The leader speaks to them via video, explaining that all of this has been one big misunderstanding and they do intend to leave their habitat. She sends over a rendezvous point and the group are pretty confident they can survive this, but given how they fared in their last bout, that's far from the truth. Murderbot realizes that there's no talking them out of this, so he decides to survey the area before they head to the habitat. Inside, the group work together to try and fix up Gurathin. He refuses painkillers and both he and Murderbot come up with the same solution at once. They deduce they can block the central nervous system of an augmented human to stop the pain. This would involve Murderbot plugging into Gurathin this time. Murderbot is confused by the 'organic goo of feelings' that Gurathin has and begins saying 'why don't you love me back,' out loud. This is, of course, Gurathin's subconscious talking to Mensah. It's pretty awkward, especially when that connection goes the other way and Gurathin sees the bloodshed and chaos in Murderbot's past with the mining colony. Even worse, Gurathin reveals that this SecUnit calls itself Murderbot because of this incident. As they go over the reasons for Murderbot thinking this way, it believes it may be one thought away from killing them all and going defective. As a result, it decides to walk away from the Preservation Society. Murderbot wanders around aimlessly, while the Preservation Society contemplate whether to bring it back, knowing that they both need each other at the moment. Murderbot has an idea, and decides to create a new story to usurp the company. When it heads back to base, the others are pretty spooked to see it. The Episode Review We hit a turning point this week as Murderbot decides to step it up a gear and branch out into unknown territory. It's very clearly going to be working with the Preservation Society going forward to hit back against the company. We still don't know what's happened with this mining colony though, nor do we actually know whether Murderbot killed those miners willingly or whether it's part of a bigger conspiracy. What we do know however, is that Murderbot – despite initially claiming to dislike these guys – clearly wants to protect the Preservation Society and likes them.
