CM credits govt. employees for Karnataka being progressive State, ranking second in GST collection

The Hindu21-04-2025
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said Karnataka has become a progressive State and ranked second in Goods and Service Tax (GST) collection in the country, largely owing to the government employees' commitment to discharge their duties efficiently.
Follow Constitutional principles
Speaking at a function organised to present the Sarvothama Awards for 2023 to 30 State government officers/employees here, the Chief Minister told employees to follow the Constitution and discharge their duties to ensure removal of caste inequalities and ensure a secular society. The government's function was aimed at fulfilling the aspirations of the people as per the Constitution, he said.
Mr Siddaramaiah told employees to emulate the ideals preached by Buddha, Basavanna, Mahatma Gandhi, and B.R. Ambedkar. The ideals followed by these leaders have been enshrined in the Constitution, he said.
The Chief Minister said the responsibilities of the recipients of the award have increased and they should become models for other employees. All government employees discharge their responsibilities for the benefit of society, he said.
Don't make them run around
Speaking at the same function, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar urged the government employees to ensure that ordinary citizens who come to them to get their work done are not made to run from pillar to post, asking them to fetch one after another document.
'Lakhs of people apply for just 50 to 100 jobs. Remember that it is a rare opportunity to get a job in the government and use it to serve people,' Mr. Shivakumar said.
Office-bearers of the Karnataka State Government Employees Association and senior officials attended the programme.

JMM urges SC to declare SIR unconstitutional

Dharwad: The Janandolan Maha Maitri (JMM), a branch of National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR), has criticised the Election Commission of India for taking up SIR (Special Intensive Revision) in Bihar and has termed it as an ill-advised move. Speaking to media in Dharwad JMM chief and anti-graft activist SR Hiremath urged the Supreme Court of India to declare SIR as unconstitutional and uphold the democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution. He stated that SIR violates Articles 14, 19, 21, 325, and 326 of the Constitution, as it contravenes the provisions of the Representation of the People's Act, 1950, and Rule 21A of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. If SIR is not set aside by the SC, it can arbitrarily and without due process disenfranchise crores of voters (as much as 30 to 50% of the country) from electing their representatives, thereby disrupting free and fair elections and democracy in the country, which are part of basic structure of the Constitution, Hiremath said. "This would be totally against the bold experiment of Universal Franchise pledged by our Founding Fathers, who enshrined it in Constitution will be negated. It is important to identify and expose the powers that be, who have made the ECI do this 'retrograde' and 'dangerous move' of the ECI," he added. Dropping land acquisition The JMM, Citizens for Democracy (CFD) and NCPNR fully support the satyagraha of the 13 villages of Channapattana Hobli (Devanahalli Taluka, Bengaluru Rural Dist) 'Bhoo Swadheena Virodhi Horata' and call upon the state govt and the chief minister, who when in the opposition, had promised that, if voted to power, they would cancel the acquisition proceedings of the KIADB to acquire 1,777 acres of fertile lands of the farmers in 13 villages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! Devanahalli land row: Prominent personalities seek intervention of Congress high command

Ahead of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's July 15 meeting with Devanahalli farmers who are seeking shelving of land acquisition, 65 prominent personalities, including historian Ramachandra Guha and writer Devanur Mahadeva, have sought immediate intervention of the Congress high command to provide justice to farmers. In an open letter to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, the prominent personalities have appealed to him to act with urgency and foresight to ensure that the Government of Karnataka honours its word and stands by farmers who are demanding that process of acquisition of 1,777 acres of land in 13 villages of Channarayapatna hobli in Devanahalli taluk for the proposed aerospace park be shelved. 'This is the moment to stand not only with the people — but for the principles they entrusted you to uphold,' said these personalities who include environmentalist N. Yellappa Reddy, theatre artists B. Jayashree and Arundhati Nag, agricultuiral economist Prakash Kammaradi, progressive writer Vijayamma, and film-maker Girish Kasaravalli besides a host of former Vice-Chancellors. They expressed concern over some people in the government voicing apprehensions that meeting the farmers' demands may hinder development or drive industries to neighbouring States. 'This narrative appears to be paving the way for delays or a possible retreat from the commitment (made before the Assembly elections to farmers that their land acquisition will be shelved). Such backtracking will not only erode the credibility of the State government, but seriously damage the Congress party's standing among rural and agrarian communities,' they warned. 'Ahead of the July 15 meeting with farmers, we urge the Karnataka government to initiate inclusive consultations — including industry leaders — to evolve a comprehensive, transparent, and balanced land acquisition and industrial land use policy,' they said. Pointing out that 163 affected farmers belong to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and much of this land was granted to them under land reform schemes, they argued that such land cannot be acquired or transferred without special permissions and protections. Circumventing these would violate constitutional guarantees and the spirit of social justice, they contended.
