Gregor Townsend hails Scotland for showing ‘true identity' in victory over Samoa
Scotland opened their tour with victory over the Maori All Blacks in New Zealand but were on the end of an ill-disciplined 29-14 defeat by Fiji in Suva last weekend.

That result was a major blow for Scotland's aspirations of breaking into the top seeds ahead of the World Cup draw in December, but Townsend's side reacted in the best way possible to finish the season on a high.
'It was hugely important,' Townsend said. 'You rise to a challenge and you show your true identity when you've got that challenge of backing up a defeat and the players showed that.
'The way they came together during the week with just a six-day turnaround and one training session, they were really aligned and focused on delivering a better performance and they did that.'
Scotland quickly got on top through tries from Lions-bound Ewan Ashman and Rory Hutchinson in the opening 13 minutes and were always in control of the game.
Arron Reed, Kyle Steyn, Grant Gilchrist, Kyle Rowe and George Turner all crossed with the Samoans grabbing two second-half tries of their own.
Townsend said: 'We had to defend really well at the beginning of the game. I thought Samoa brought a lot from their attack. They were direct, they were physical and they moved the ball well to the wide channels.
'So that set us up really well for us to move the ball when we had it. I thought we were really clinical in the 22, through our forwards mainly, with the mall, but also the direct carrying.
'And then just some really good skills to score tries and give us that cushion going into half-time.
'That would be close to how well the team played against the Maori. This game was more physical.
'It's been a really enjoyable tour, so it's important we finish with a top performance.'
Townsend hailed scrum-half Jamie Dobie, who was involved in the build-up to several tries, but was stopped just short of the line himself and delivered some important defensive interventions.

'Jamie was great,' he added. 'He was battling with cramp near the end, but for him to go from nine to wing and play equally as well….
'I thought Gregor Brown was outstanding, came back from injury and then getting another injury in our first game on tour. Grant Gilchrist going 80 minutes again and Fin Richardson in his first cap, showing real energy.
'And it was really pleasing to see our scrum and our line-up maul being dominant. It's something we've spent a lot of time working on. The players have really worked hard and we have had our rewards in that area on this tour.'

'When extra-time comes you know you've got another 30 minutes of football, so you've got to re-regulate, bring yourself back down level and focus. 'We managed to battle through that and hang on even with people going down and then penalties came and that was just ridiculous really.' Morgan looked completely at home in the new-look back three despite playing her first European Championship minutes in one of the most intense encounters of the competition so far. Having missed Euro 2022 through injury and remained an unused substitute during the 2023 World Cup, it was particularly emotional for her family, who were there in support and watched on through a nerve-wracking 14 penalties. 'It was really, really special. Apparently, my mum was sobbing when I came on, bless her! It doesn't take much to set her off watching the football,' said Morgan. 'She was crying as well after we won on penalties, so a lot of tears were shed. 'I was just really excited to get the opportunity. I've been working hard throughout the tournament to stay prepared if I was called upon so I felt really ready when that happened to be able to make an impact and a good contribution to the team. 'Being able to turn it around and get the win in the end was such a joyous moment.' England's is a bench that has consistently caught headlines as Morgan and her peers have big shoes to fill. Whether for the impact of Ella Toone, Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo three years ago at Euro 2022, or for their 'snapping' celebration after Beth Mead's goal against Wales the Lionesses' bench has remained impactful. Against Sweden, it proved no different. Kelly's impact, in particular, was remarkable. She was instrumental in both of England's open play goals before going on to score a decisive penalty in the shootout. 'She's an incredible player. She seems to thrive on these moments when the team needs her to pull a performance out of the bag,' Morgan reflected. 'She was getting in great positions in the wide areas and Chloe is a brilliant crosser of the ball so when I saw her cut in, I just knew she was going to land it on somebody's head. Thankfully, people were there ready to finish it off. 'Obviously she had a decisive penalty as well and under that pressure, there is no one I would rather have in that position. 'She's so reliable and just so composed and calm. She said afterwards that she made eye contact with the 'keeper and she was smirking at her, so she just started laughing. 'I just think the composure in that moment to just be so free and at ease to be able to laugh just shows what a brilliant player she is at stepping up.' Another player who entered the field alongside Morgan also proved vital in England's efforts to turn around the two-goal deficit. Michelle Agyemang, at just 19 years old, came on to score the equaliser and turn in a brilliant display as a second striker that had Morgan singing her praises. 'I'm so proud of the impact she has been able to make,' she said of the forward. 'At the end of the game I just said, 'Mich, you are clutch,' because that's twice now she's stepped up in pressured situations to come off the bench and make an incredible impact. 'She's someone we know we can turn to in stressful situations to be a presence, holding the ball up, linking play, making runs in behind. 'She's an incredibly hard worker and has an incredible sense of the positions she should take up in the box to get on the end of chances.' It is a strength in depth that has bailed England out on several occasions and a group that Wiegman clearly trusts to turn to when the pressure is on. As the manager often reinforces the 'togetherness' in the team, it is often those off the pitch that embody that mentally the most. And as the Lionesses progress to a semi-final against Italy, there is no doubt that Wiegman will once more turn to Morgan and her fellow 'finishers' to see England through regardless of the game state. 'On the bench we're always encouraging each other to spread belief to those on the pitch, but also to stay ready and make an impact,' added Morgan. 'That was what we spoke about when all of us were sat on the bench at the start of the second half, and all of us were. 'I'm really proud of everyone. England's Jess Carter reveals racial abuse at Euro 2025, FA has contacted police
ZURICH — England defender Jess Carter says she has been subject to racial abuse online at the Women's European Championship. Carter came in for a lot of criticism for her performance during England's opening loss to France. And some of that has crossed the line even as the 27-year-old and the Lionesses have reached the semifinals at Euro 2025. 'From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse,' Carter wrote in an emotional post on Instagram on Sunday. 'Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think it's ok to target someone's appearance or race.' Carter has made 49 appearances for England and was part of the victorious Euro 2022 squad as well as an integral part of the team that finished runner-up to Spain at the World Cup the following year. She says she will be taking a step back from social media. 'As ever I am grateful for all of the support from the genuine fans but I am taking this measure to protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team anyway I can,' Carted added. Carter's teammates immediately responded to her Instagram post with messages of support. The Football Association has contacted police back in the United Kingdom. 'Our priority is Jess and giving her all the support she needs,' FA CEO Mark Bullingham said. 'We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism. 'As soon as we were made aware of the racist abuse Jess received, we immediately contacted UK police. They are in touch with the relevant social media platform, and we are working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice.' Bullingham added that the FA had measures in place to respond quickly as 'regrettably, this is not the first time this has happened to an England player.' Carter plays her club soccer for Gotham FC in the United States, having joined from Chelsea a year ago. 'We are heartbroken and outraged by the racist abuse directed at Jess Carter. Jess is not only a world-class football player — she is a role model, a leader and a valued part of our Gotham FC family,' the New York area-based team said in a statement. 'At Gotham, we believe in a culture of mutual respect and remain committed to building a game — and a community — where everyone feels safe, respected and celebrated. There is no place for racism in our sport.' England plays Italy in the semifinals on Tuesday in Geneva, after a dramatic comeback against Sweden last week saw the Lionesses win a chaotic penalty shootout. The other semifinal pits Spain against Germany on Wednesday. 'Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won't have to deal with it,' Carter said. 'We have made some historic changes with this Lionesses squad that I am so proud to be part of and my hope is that by speaking out about this it will make another positive change for all. 'I'm now looking forward and focusing on putting all my energy into helping my team.'

Lions call-up Scotland star to cover for Joe McCarthy after he picked up injury in first Test - as Andy Farrell faces changing winning team
The Lions are in danger of being forced to change a winning team for the second Test, after calling up Scotland lock Gregor Brown as cover for the injured Joe McCarthy of Ireland. Brown arrived in camp with the British and Irish squad after their flight here from Brisbane, joining compatriots Rory Sutherland and Ewan Ashman as reinforcements, taking the number of players on duty up to 45. The trio, along with Ireland prop Tom Clarkson, are set to be involved in the game against a First Nations-Pasifika XV at Marvel Stadium tomorrow. McCarthy suffered a foot injury in the 27-19 win over Australia in the first Test at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane last Saturday. He was forced to leave the field just after half-time and amid doubts about his availability for the next international match, at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday. Brown has been summoned to take part in the midweek fixture and ensure England's Ollie Chessum is kept fit and fresh for the second Test. If McCarthy is ruled out of the pivotal encounter with the Wallabies – which would be a setback for the Lions, given his thunderous impact in Brisbane – the most likely fall-back plan would see Chessum promoted to partner his compatriot, captain Maro Itoje, in the second row.
