Swiss Senate Eases Arms Export Rules Amid Industry Struggles
On Wednesday, the upper house backed reinstating the government with powers to permit passing on Swiss-made arms to conflict zones. The bill would also exempt a list of 25 countries, mostly NATO members, from having to ask for permission in the first place. It still needs approval in the lower house.

Hedge Funds Rush Into Bullish Oil Bets as Trump Pressures Russia
Hedge funds boosted their bullish bets on crude oil at the fastest pace in over a month as US President Donald Trump's threat of additional levies on Russia drove fears about tighter supplies. Money managers increased their combined net-long position on West Texas Intermediate and Brent by 39,779 lots to 299,295, in the week ending July 29, according to data from ICE Futures Europe and the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission compiled by Bloomberg. That was the biggest increase since mid-June, when the conflict between Israel and Iran escalated.

Norwegian Cruise Line shares surge after record second quarter revenue
-- Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. reported record second-quarter revenue of $2.52 billion, up 6% YoY, though slightly below analyst expectations of $2.56 billion. The company posted adjusted earnings per share of $0.51, narrowly missing the consensus estimate of $0.52, but demonstrating strong consumer demand across its brands. Norwegian's shares surged 9.6% following the announcement as investors responded positively to the company's strong performance and reaffirmed full-year guidance. The cruise operator reported that bookings have rebounded across all three of its brands, with booking levels now exceeding historical patterns in recent months. The company delivered adjusted EBITDA of $694 million, exceeding its guidance of $670 million. Net yield increased approximately 2.7% on an as-reported basis and 3.1% in constant currency, outperforming guidance of approximately 2.5%. Gross margin per capacity day increased 11% compared to the same period in 2024. "We delivered another record quarter, demonstrating once again the strong customer demand environment, the power of our brands, our outstanding onboard product, and the dedication of our team," said Harry Sommer, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line (NYSE:NCLH) Holdings. Norwegian maintained its full-year 2025 guidance, projecting adjusted EPS of $2.05, representing a 16% increase from 2024. The company expects full-year net yield to increase approximately 2.5% on a constant currency basis versus 2024. The cruise operator also announced expansion plans for its private island destination, Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, including a nearly six-acre waterpark expected to open in summer 2026. Additionally, the company took delivery of Oceania Allura and confirmed orders for two additional next-generation ships. France's FDJ slides after gaming group calls current year one of "transition"
- Shares of La Francaise des Jeux slipped by more than 10% on Thursday after the French gaming company called its current fiscal year one of "transition" and analysts flagged "few catalysts" on the horizon. FDJ, whose offerings include scratch cards in France, posted first-half revenue of 1.87 billion euros, an uptick of 31% versus a year earlier but down 2% on a restated basis. Lottery revenues rose by 6% to 1.07 million euros, fueled in large part by FDJ's digital operations. However, point-of-sale sports betting sales dropped by 6% to 225 million euros, reflecting "unfavorable sports results" for the operator, FDJ said. Online betting and gaming was also a weak spot of FDJ's top-line result, slipping by 12% on a restated basis to 466 million euros, due in particular to a stronger comparison driven by last summer's Euro football tournament as well as recent tax and regulatory policies in the Netherlands and U.K. Excluding those two markets, revenue at the segment would be higher by 5%. Adjusted net income stood at 222 million euros, which FDJ said reflected the impact of financing related to its acquisition of Swedish peer Kindred and "the one-off tax contribution on the profits of large French companies." FDJ reiterated its 2025 targets for stable pro forma revenue and a recurring core income margin of over 24%.
