Over 1.12 lakh teachers trained ahead of new academic year in State

The Hindu01-06-2025
The Department of School Education under its teacher training programme has completed training for teachers and headmasters covering 25,356 various government, local body, urban residential and model schools ahead of the beginning of the 2025-26 academic year.
The programme was conducted in three five-day spells from May 13 to 31. Over 5,600 trainers of teachers led the sessions for 1,12,882 teachers. A total of 1,165 teachers who would retire in July 2025 were exempted from the training, and another 3,202 teachers were availing various leaves and they would be trained in the mop-up programme. In all, about 97.24% of the teachers completed the training modules.
According to Director, School Education, E.V. Narasimha Reddy, trainings were organised strategically — high school teachers at the district level and primary school teachers were trained at the mandal level. Their daily attendance was tracked with the Telangana School Education mobile app. The pre- and post-training tests for the teachers were conducted using the mobile application, which also generated individual training certificates.
The training programme was essential and was aimed at improving Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) for primary classes and Learning Improvement Program (LIP) for secondary classes.
The five-day modules familiarised and tested the teachers on innovative teaching-learning methodologies, digital literacy and tools such as Artificial Intelligence, Information Communication Technology and IFPs, departmental initiatives, creating drug-free school environment, adolescent safety and empowerment, and assessment practices.

Telangana's rank in National Achievement Survey 2024 improves; but it is not in top-10 high performing States

Jangaon is the only district in Telangana that featured in the '50 high performing districts' in the country in the assessment of grades 3, 6 and 9. Wanaparthy, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Mulugu were in the 50 low performing districts. Telangana, however, showed an improvement compared to the last national survey conducted in 2021, for grades 3, 5 and 8. The results are part of PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan, formerly National Achievement Survey (NAS), the national survey conducted by National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to assess learning competencies of students in grades 3 (foundational), 6 (preparatory) and 9 (middle stage). The survey is conducted every three years. Across the country, 781 districts in 28 States and eight Union Territories, over 21 lakh students were assessed in the survey. In Telangana, the assessment was conducted on December 4, 2024, in 3,342 schools in 33 districts. As per the report, Telangana is not in the top-10 high performing States in the country, but it is also not in the 10 low performing States. As per an average, the State is ranked 26th in grade 3 and grade 6 assessment and 17th in grade 9. The State was 36th for grade 3 in the 2021 assessment. According to a statement from director, School Education E. Naveen Nicholas, 'This indicates that Telangana has exited the group of bottom-10 performing States for all classes.' Also, 'there is a clear 10% point improvement in language and Mathematics scores for class 3 students, and government schools, particularly those under State management, have performed better than private schools and Central government schools in core subjects in class 3,' he noted. Further, the performance of class 6 students has also shown encouraging signs of academic recovery, although continued efforts are necessary to sustain gains and further strengthen basic literacy and numeracy skills, the note observed. Decisions which contributed to better result Officials in the School Education Department are also of the view that decisions such as teacher promotions, transfers, which enabled appropriate teacher deployment, combined with capacity building of teachers and close monitoring contributed to the better result. Implementation of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy and academic support initiatives in the districts also helped the progress, they said.

NEP, new online system blamed: 14,127 RTE-eligible children still await admission in Haryana; schools resume after summer break

GURGAON: While schools have reopened after the summer break and classes have resumed, over 14,127 students in Haryana are still waiting for admission. The students are eligible for free admission under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. The Haryana education department recently released a provisional list of potential RTE beneficiaries. However, students are still required to undergo a verification process. If their documents are not verified, they may lose their chance at the admission. The department originally planned to begin the online application process by June 25, but delays pushed the start date to July 11. The delay has left parents anxious and fearing academic loss to their children as the current school session is already underway. An official from Gurgaon said this year's provisional list for primary admissions, particularly for LKG and junior classes, has been affected by the New Education Policy (NEP) and the introduction of 'Bal Vatika'. Moreover, multiple deadlines for the admission process have been missed. While the central govt reportedly advised initiating the RTE admission process by Dec, work in Haryana only commenced in April, leading to a significant procedural delay. A key reason cited for the current delays is the implementation of a new, centralised online system for RTE admissions. This system is designed for record-keeping and facilitating reimbursements. The central server of the Department of School Education (DSE) now handles the allotment and random selection of students. A nodal officer from Gurgaon said local bodies merely execute orders from above. Another factor contributing to the delays has been the reluctance of private schools to admit students under the RTE Act. The nodal officer said there have been instances where schools would "not accept forms" from parents, which would eventually lead to vacant seats. Then the govt decided to take over the seat allotment process. Frustrated by the delay in admissions under the RTE Act, Rajkumar, who works as a daily wager, recently enrolled his child in a govt-aided school. "My elder son was admitted through the RTE scheme, and I hoped to do the same for my younger one as well . But with no updates on the admission process, I couldn't wait any longer," he said.
