Curro Salt Rock golfers win national tournament at Sun City
Held annually in the Pilanesberg National Park, the Westville Sun City Golf Festival took place from April 29 to May 2. After finishing in an impressive fourth last year, Curro (+13) shot to a memorable title this time around, beating Paul Roos A (+21) by eight strokes.
Inspired by a chance meeting with double World Cup-winning Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus while out to dinner, the school finished first against many of South Africa's most illustrious schools.
One hundred and eighty competitors from 32 schools competed over four days at the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Courses. Curro claimed the Team Net Score title and team captain Tamika Wolfe (17) reigned supreme, winning the Ladies' title (+9).
At the same time, twin brothers Hiratio (2nd) and Kyden Ward (8th) finished in the top 10 of the Individual Net Score competition, with Hiratio (-10) claiming the runner-up spot.
'Winning the Team Nett Score is an absolutely incredible feeling; we are so proud of Hiratio,' said Wolfe.
'It is such a sense of pride and accomplishment, with all the hours of practice finally paying off. Taking home the title in the ladies' section makes winning even more special. Knowing that I worked hard to achieve such a great result made me feel proud, but captaining the team to victory was the cherry on top!'
Coach Eugene 'Monty' Montgomery praised his young team, noting that the Ward twins flew back mid-tournament to KZN to participate in provincial age-group rugby trials, returning the following day in time to tee off.
'I'm proud of my team, especially Tamika, whose leadership and performance were exceptional. Their focus – especially the twins – dedication, discipline and commitment paid off,' he said.
The former Curro headmaster added that the pep-talk given by coach Rassie helped focus the players.
'He was so good and accommodating with the kids, not like some of his Bok team-talks,' laughed Monty.
'I think the team really took on board his advice, which helped their collective performance.'

Blue Bulls enter Currie Cup tournament with good mix of youth and experience
The Bulls showed that they are serious about winning the Currie Cup this year, when Coach Phiwe Nomlomo named his squad for this tournament, which kicks off this coming weekend. No fewer than six of the players who starred for the Junior Springboks in winning the u.20 World Championship and four Springboks are among those named in Nomlomo's squad for the tournament. The robust health of the union's junior pathways is further reflected in another 10 players being u.21, which signals both ambition and confidence on the part of Nomlomo and his coaching team. Thus, more than 50 percent of the squad (excluding the injured list) is comprised of club and u.21 players. Former SA u.20 player Nama Xaba, a flanker, will captain the side this season. Ahead of this weekend's start against Western Province in Cape Town, Nomlomo hailed South African rugby's oldest competition as a 'great opportunity for the players to go out and do their best for themselves and the jersey'. He said he was excited that incoming Bulls URC coach, Johan Ackermann, would be able to see the Currie Cup squad first hand, and to run the rule over the depth at Loftus Versfeld. 'They've put in the work,' said Nomlomo, who is under no illusions as to the strength of the competition. – Loose head prop Lizo Gqoboka, who is back at Loftus Versfeld after his stint in Cape Town, lock Marvin Orie, wing Aphiwe Dyantyi and veteran flank, Nizaam Carr, are the four Springboks in the group, while Stedman Gans is a sevens Bok. – The 31-year-old flyhalf, Jaco van der Walt, played four tests for Scotland in 2020 and 2021. – The world champion Junior Boks who will wear Blue Bulls colours are Esethu Mnebelele, Jacobus Grobbelaar, Jean Erasmus, JJ Theron, Cheswill Jooste and Demitre Erasmus. The full squad for the Currie Cup season is: Forwards: Abri van der Westhuysen; Cassie Badenhorst; Dylan de Leeuw; Dylan Smith; Esethu Mnebelele; Francois Klopper; Jacobus Grobbelaar; Jean Erasmus; Jeandré Rudolph; JJ Theron; Joe van Zyl; Junior Pokomela; Lizo Gqoboka; Marco Ferreira; Marvin Orie; Nama Xaba (captain); Ruan Swart; Shaun Schurmann and Sintu Manjezi. Backs: Boeta Chamberlain; Brooklyn Newmann; Cheswill Jooste; Chris Barend Smit; Daimon O'Connell; Demitre Erasmus; Henry Immelman; Jaco van der Walt; Katlego Letebele; Liam Koen; PA van Niekerk; Riyaad Bam; Stedman Gans; Steven Nel; Stravino Jacobs and Zak Burger. Injured players: Aphiwe Dyantyi; Celimpilo Gumede; Corné Beets; Cornel Smit; Heinrich Theron; Juann Else; Khutha Mchunu; Nizaam Carr and Simphiwe Matanzima. Springboks: The nine players released, and why!
Ahead of the Springboks' first two Tests in the Rugby Championship, Rassie Erasmus has trimmed the squad from 46 players in the wider group to a more deliberate 36-man squad that will come into contention against Australia. Here we take a look at the nine players who have been released on 'standby', and the reasons why. Lukhanyo Am: The 31-year-old missed the July internationals due to an injury, and needs to get back to fitness and form as the Springboks currently know what they have in Jesse Kriel and Canan Moodie. Faf de Klerk: It does increasingly seem as if De Klerk has begun to hand over the baton to younger scrumhalves such as Grant Williams and Morne van den Berg, but don't bet against the double World Cup winner having a role to play later in the Rugby Championship. Makazole Mapimpi: The third – but not final – World Cup stalwart to miss out on the Springboks' latest selection. Considering he will soon turn 35, it does stand to reason that the coaches are spending more time getting a closer look at the likes of Edwill van der Merwe and Ethan Hooker. Salmaan Moerat: The Springboks are blessed with depth at lock, and in a trimmed squad, it's no huge surprise that space has just run out for Moerat. Evan Roos: The curious case of Evan Roos continues at national level. Despite a number of unavailable players at No 8, it seems like Cobus Wiese has now even jumped ahead of the Stormers star in the pecking order. Neethling Fouche: It's a pity to see the incredibly likeable Fouche fall out of the mix, but with Vincent Koch, Wilco Louw and exciting newcomer Asenathi Ntlabakanye all covering tighthead, his omission doesn't come as a major shock. Vincent Tshituka: It is a bit of a surprise that Tshituka has missed out after largely impressing at the start of the season, but it may be that Jean-Luc du Preez is seen to be deserving of a chance to back up first-choice star Pieter-Steph du Toit. Thomas du Toit: The burly prop is undergoing a compulsory two-week rest period in line with English Premiership protocols. Jasper Wiese: The World Cup-winning No 8 is serving a four-match suspension. In total, Erasmus' squad includes 20 forwards and 17 backline players. The Springboks will face the Wallabies in Johannesburg on Saturday 16 August, and again a week later in Cape Town on 23 August. Forwards: Lood de Jager (Wild Knights), Pieter-Steph du Toit (Toyota Verblitz), Jean-Luc du Preez (Bordeaux Begles), Eben Etzebeth (Sharks), Vincent Koch (Sharks), Siya Kolisi (Sharks), Wilco Louw (Vodacom Bulls), Malcolm Marx (Kubota Spears), Bongi Mbonambi (Sharks), Franco Mostert (Honda Heat), Ox Nche (Sharks), Ruan Nortje (Vodacom Bulls), Asenathi Ntlabakanye (Lions), Kwagga Smith (Shizuoka Blue Revs), RG Snyman (Leinster), Marnus van der Merwe (Scarlets), Marco van Staden (Vodacom Bulls), Boan Venter (Edinburgh), Jan-Hendrik Wessels (Vodacom Bulls), Cobus Wiese (Vodacom Bulls). Backs: Kurt-Lee Arendse (Vodacom Bulls), Damian de Allende (Wild Knights), Andre Esterhuizen (Sharks), Aphelele Fassi (Sharks), Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (Stormers), Ethan Hooker (Sharks), Jesse Kriel (Canon Eagles), Cheslin Kolbe (Tokyo Sungoliath), Willie le Roux (Vodacom Bulls), Manie Libbok (Hanazono Kintetsu Liners), Canan Moodie (Vodacom Bulls), Handre Pollard (Vodacom Bulls), Cobus Reinach (Stormers), Edwill van der Merwe (Sharks), Morne van den Berg (Lions), Grant Williams (Sharks), Damian Willemse (Stormers). Erasmus names experience and young blood in Bok squad for Australia Tests
'Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina are all ranked in the top seven in the world and if one considers we won the Rugby Championship for the first time since 2019 last year, it is clear this will be a completely different kettle of fish. 'All three teams have beaten us in the last few years and they play a different style of rugby to the other opposition we have faced thus far, but we are pleased with the foundation we laid in the last few weeks and we know exactly what areas of our game we need to work on.' Erasmus will announce his squad for the two-match tour to New Zealand in September before making the journey Down Under, where they will face their arch-rivals at Eden Park in Auckland on September 6, and the Sky Stadium in Wellington on September 13. The Boks wrap up their campaign with Tests against Argentina in Durban on September 27 and in London on October 4.
