Dan Hopper was on the scoresheet as the Carlisle United teenager helped Penrith to victory in their last home game of the season.
The Blues youth team player netted in the 59th minute to seal a 2-0 win against Whitley Bay for Darren Edmondson's Northern League Division One side.
Hopper's strike, which followed Luke Hunter's opener, was the 17-year-old's fifth since joining the Bonny Blues on work experience in December.
His last game for Edmondson's 17th-placed side will come at Shildon next weekend. Hopper, the son of the late United and Workington Reds hero Tony, has been offered a deal to stay at Brunton Park.
Also in Northern League Division One, Josh O'Brien helped Carlisle City to a clean sheet and a victory.
The Blues defender was in Dan Kirkup's XI as they won 1-0 at Seaham Red Star thanks to Jordan Irving's goal. Their final league game comes at home to Northallerton Town next Saturday.
North of the border, Luke Armstrong was a substitute for Motherwell in their 0-0 draw with Heart of Midlothian, the striker coming off the bench in the 71st minute for Michael Wimmer's side in the Scottish Premiership clash.
Taylor Charters got his latest start as Queen of the South claimed another victory, the Blues man playing the first 65 minutes as Peter Murphy's side defeated Montrose 2-1.
It was an 11th appearance for Charters with the Doonhamers, as they won a third straight game. They remain fourth ahead of next Saturday's trip to sixth-placed Kelty Hearts.
There was an injury blow for another United loanee as Ethan Robson limped off in his third Gateshead appearance.
The midfielder had to go off after just 38 minutes as Carl Magnay's side won 3-2 at Forest Green Rovers in the National League.

The north east side are fifth and Robson will hope to return for the rest of their run-in, with a home clash with York City next on Good Friday.
In National League North, Sam Hetherington came off the bench in the 75th minute for his latest Darlington appearance at Chester, as the Quakers went down to a 2-1 defeat. Next for the young Blues player and his team-mates is a Friday clash with South Shields.
Neither Jake Allan nor Aran Fitzpatrick were involved for Workington Reds in their 1-0 defeat to Leek Town in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
A number of ex-Blues were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.
In the Premier League, Jarrad Branthwaite helped Everton to a clean sheet in a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, but Dean Henderson was on the receiving end as Manchester City fought back to defeat Crystal Palace 5-2.
The Championship saw Jerry Yates on target for Derby County in their 2-2 draw at Portsmouth, while on Friday James Trafford helped promotion-chasing Burnley to a 2-1 home win over Norwich City.
In League One, Jack Diamond netted Stockport County's first goal as they came from behind to win 3-1 against Rotherham United, with both Owen Moxon and Oliver Norwood also starting in the Hatters' midfield.

Jon Mellish returned to the Wigan Athletic starting XI as the Latics drew 0-0 with Wrexham.
League Two saw two ex-Blues play a key part in a dramatic fightback in the relegation battle, as Omari Patrick (two) and Kristian Dennis scored as Tranmere Rovers came from 3-0 down after 78 minutes to draw 3-3 with Accrington Stanley – Patrick hitting the equaliser in the 11th minute of added time.

The sons of ex-United managers were in the goals again, with Aaron Pressley (son of Steven) scoring in Barrow's 2-0 win over Walsall, and Calum Kavanagh (son of Graham) hitting a hat-trick in Bradford City's remarkable 5-4 defeat at Swindon Town.
Paddy Madden scored to seal Chesterfield's 3-0 win over Fleetwood Town.
In the National League, Ryan Carr opened the scoring for relegated Ebbsfleet United in their 4-1 win over Sutton United.

Northern League Division One saw Max Cowburn score West Allotment Celtic's consolation goal from the penalty spot in a 3-1 defeat at Tow Law Town.
There was a goal for 43-year-old Derek Asamoah in Haringey Borough's 2-0 win over Heybridge Swifts in the Isthmian League North Division.
And in the Scottish Championship, there was an eventful evening for Ethan Walker, who scored a late equaliser and was then sent off for a second bookable offence in Ayr United's 1-1 draw with Falkirk.

Mets Announce Signing of Former Atlanta Braves Player Before Pirates Game

Mets Announce Signing of Former Atlanta Braves Player Before Pirates Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets have pushed themselves to the top of the National League East as they reach the halfway point of the season, holding a narrow lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. Following a recent rough patch, the Mets now sit at 48-34 through 82 games and appear to be back on track after an impressive shutout outing against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. Advertisement Over the past month, the Mets have made subtle adjustments to ensure that depth remains a strength heading into the second half. With a demanding schedule ahead and outfield injuries lingering, the front office has kept an eye on experienced players who can step in when needed. New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza (64) © Thomas Shea-Imagn Images Ahead of their weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Mets announced the signing outfielder José Azocar to a minor league deal, bringing him back into the organization. Azocar played in 12 games for the Mets earlier this season, batting .278 batting, with 5 hits, an RBI and 5 runs scored before being designated for assignment in late May. He elected free agency, eventually signing with the Atlanta Braves, but now returns to Triple-A Syracuse to serve as outfield insurance. Azocar, 29, also has major league experience with the San Diego Padres, and is valued for his speed and defensive versatility. If injuries arise or matchups demand, he could be a candidate for a call-up as the Mets aim to protect their slim lead in the NL East. Three Biggest American League Snubs From First Round of All-Star Game Voting

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. As done with the National League, it is time to look and see who some of the All-Star Game snubs in the American League were. While the NL had more obvious snubs, the AL had its fair share as well and here are the three players that were left out of the second stage of All-Star Game voting. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JUNE 23: Byron Buxton #25 of the Minnesota Twins walks to the dugout in the eighth inning of the game against the Seattle Mariners at Target Field on June 23, 2025 in... MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JUNE 23: Byron Buxton #25 of the Minnesota Twins walks to the dugout in the eighth inning of the game against the Seattle Mariners at Target Field on June 23, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. MoreByron Buxton, Minnesota Twins Buxton is top five in nearly every offensive category among centerfielders and leads most American League outfielders in all those same categories. Due to the fan voting, he fell short of Detroit Tigers centerfielder Javier Baez and Los Angeles Angels right fielder Mike Trout. The combined WAR of Trout and Baez sits at 2.7, a touch lower than Buxton's 2.9 WAR this season. Buxton is finally healthy again and on pace to play his most games in a season since 2017 when he appeared in 140. That was also the last time he made an All-Star Game and hopefully his excellent play will be rewarded when the reserves are announced. Byron Buxton mashes his 18th homer of the year! — MLB (@MLB) June 28, 2025 Jonathan Aranda, Tampa Bay Rays Aranda is not a very well-known name around the league yet, but he certainly should be after the season. He leads all first baseman in batting average, on-base percentage and OPS. He trails only the Mets' Pete Alonso and Cubs' Michael Busch in slugging percentage among first basemen, making him the AL leader for slugging. Once again, his lack of popularity was his downfall, as the Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt and Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero Jr. were chosen over Aranda by way of the fan vote. Much like Buxton, Aranda should see his name on the roster when the reserves are announced. Jonathan Aranda crushed this 433 FT HR. He's been the best first baseman in the American League this year.#RaysUp — Running From The OPS (@OPS_BASEBALL) June 27, 2025 Jeremy Pena, Houston Astros Due to the first stage of All-Star Game voting being fan selection, it is no surprise that a member of the Houston Astros didn't make the cut. No, Pena was not on Houston's roster when the infamous cheating scandal was uncovered, but that still looms large in the minds of fans when they are voting on who makes it past the first stage of voting. It is unfortunate for Pena, as he is in the top three of nearly every offensive category among American League shortstops and most likely should've received a nod over Bobby Witt Jr. He did leave the game Friday night after being hit by a pitch in the ribs but as long as everything is well, he should make the All-Star Game for the first time in his career. Did you know that entering today, only Aaron Judge has a higher WAR this season than Jeremy Peña? — MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) June 25, 2025 More MLB: Three Biggest National League Snubs From First Round of All-Star Game Voting

Ohtani unleashes 101.7mph fastball in third start for Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitches against the Kansas City Royals (Jay Biggerstaff) Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani threw the fastest pitch of his career on Saturday, firing a 101.7mph fastball in the first inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers' 9-5 loss to the Royals in Kansas City. Ohtani pitched two innings for the first time since he returned to the mound this month after a near two-year absence in the wake of elbow surgery. Advertisement With one out in the first he gave up a line drive single to Bobby Witt Jr then walked Maikel Garcia. Ohtani then went up two strikes against Vinnie Pasquantino -- on a 99.2 mph fastball and a 100.2 mph fastball, Pasquantino finally grounding into a double play off Ohtani's blistering 101.7 mph four-seam fastball -- the fastest pitch by a Dodgers hurler this year. Ohani retired three straight batters in the second and finished with 27 pitches, 20 of them strikes. At the plate, Ohtani struck out twice before he was taken out as pitcher, finishing the day 0-for-4. Ohtani, the reigning National Legue Most Valuable Player, returned to the mound this month for the first time since August 2023 -- when he tore elbow ligaments pitching for the Los Angeles Angels. Advertisement He has starred with his bat since joining the Dodgers on a 10-year, $700 million contract in December 2023 but the team have taken a careful approach to his return to the mound. He has now pitched four innings in three outings this season with Saturday's start his first on the road. bb/rcw
