Liverpool FC and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his brother, fellow soccer player André Silva, died in a car crash early Thursday morning, Spanish authorities said Thursday. Jota was 28, and Silva was 25.
The brothers were found dead near Zamora, Spain, the country's Civil Guard confirmed to the Associated Press. Police are investigating the cause of the accident, which occurred just after midnight when the Lamborghini the brothers were riding in veered off the road and burst into flames.
No other vehicles were involved and the brothers were alone in the car, police said. It's unclear which brother was driving.
'We have lost two champions,' Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença said in a statement. 'The passing of Diogo and André Silva represents an irreparable loss for Portuguese football and we will do everything we can to honor their legacy every day.'
Jota, whose full name was Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, was known as a clinical finisher. Early in his professional career, Jota played for such teams as Paços de Ferreira, Atlético Madrid and the Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He signed with Liverpool in 2020 and went on to score 65 goals in 182 games for the Reds. The organization said in a statement that it is 'devastated' by Jota's death.
'Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss,' the team wrote.
Lakers star LeBron James, a minority Liverpool owner, referenced the team's unofficial anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' as he paid tribute to Jota on X.
'My prayers goes out to his loved ones during this time!' James wrote. 'May you all be guided and protected! YNWA JOTA!!'
Jota played nearly 50 games for Portugal as well. He made the 2022 World Cup squad, but was unable to play because of injury. Jota's final match was Portugal's 5-3 win in a penalty shoot-out over Spain in the Nations League final June 8. About two weeks later, Jota married Rute Cardoso, who was his childhood sweetheart and mother of their three young children.
'It doesn't make any sense,' Jota's Portugal teammate Cristiano Ronaldo wrote in Portuguese on X. 'Just now we were together in the national team, just now you had gotten married. My condolences to your family, to your wife and to your children. I wish them all the strength in the world. I know that you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.'
Silva was a midfielder for the Liga Portugal 2 squad Penafiel.
A moment of silence for the brothers will be observed at all UEFA Women's Euro 2025 matches on Thursday and Friday, including the Spain-Portugal game Thursday at noon PDT.

Family of Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother gather at chapel for wake after fatal crash

Associated Press GONDOMAR, Portugal (AP) — Family and friends of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother gathered Friday at a church where their bodies have been brought for a wake and funeral, after the Portuguese soccer players were killed in a car crash in Spain. Some hugged and wept before entering the Capela da Ressurreição São Cosme, where the funeral for the siblings is planned for Saturday. Mourners left flowers and candles next to a tree outside the chapel were visitation was held. The brothers' parents were in attendance, as well as Jota's agent, Jorge Mendes. Portuguese president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the head of state, also visited to pay his respects. Gondomar resident Ricardo Alves lamented the loss of the local star as he passed by the chapel. 'It is a great sadness, although I did not know him personally, he was from here and I knew many of his friends from the region where he lived," Alves said. "It is a great loss, he is a young man, with a lot still to give and he had a somewhat tragic fate.' Jota, 28, and his 25-year-old brother, André Silva, were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed on an isolated stretch of highway just after midnight on Thursday and burst into flames. Their bodies were repatriated to Portugal after being identified by the family, Spanish government officials said. Jota and his parents both have homes in Gondomar, where he started his playing career as a child. Gondomar is a working-class town next to Porto, where Jota was born. Jota's death occurred two weeks after he married long-time partner Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League title. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year. Spanish police are investigating the cause of the crash, which did not involve another vehicle, they said. They said they believe it could have caused by a blown tire. Jota's brother Silva played with Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions. Condolences poured in from Portuguese officials and the world of soccer as news of the accident spread. Liverpool fans laid flower wreaths and team scarves outside Anfield stadium, while a moment of silence was held before Portugal played Spain at the Women's European Championship in Switzerland. The loss was felt sharply in his hometown, especially at his first soccer club, where Jota started playing at age 9. 'He never forgot his roots, nor his friends, because he had a group of friends who were with him in the training here in Gondomar and who he even invited from time to time to go and watch Liverpool games in England," Gondomar SC director Anselmo Serra told The Associated Press. 'They were like a group of friends that he never forgot over the years.' Heading to England via boat Jota and his brother were driving overnight to catch a boat from Santander, on Spain's northern coast, to go to England to rejoin Liverpool, when they crashed, according to Portuguese media. Portuguese sports website Record published a video interview with Miguel Goncalves, who said he worked as a physical therapist for Jota. Gonçalves told Record that Jota was avoiding flying due to a lung condition that he had recently treated. 'I was in his house at night for a last treatment,' Gonçalves said. 'He was proud to have recovered from his pulmonary problem. He was happy to be with his brother. They were excited to spend some time together on the trip.' Spanish police have yet to say which brother was driving at the time of the accident. ___ Wilson reported from Barcelona, Spain. Aston Villa confirm permanent Philippe Coutinho transfer to Vasco da Gama

Aston Villa have confirmed that midfielder Philippe Coutinho has completed a permanent move to Vasco da Gama. The 33-year-old spent last season on loan at the Brazilian side, with the two clubs agreeing to make the switch permanent. His Villa contract was set to run until next summer and he was one of the club's highest earners at £135,000 ($184k) a week. Advertisement Coutinho initially joined Villa on loan from Barcelona in January 2022, reuniting him with then-manager and former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard. He signed a five-year contract at Villa Park following a £17m transfer later that year and made 43 appearances for the team in total, scoring six goals and providing three assists. His last appearance for Villa came in a 4-0 win over Everton in August 2023, where he played 20 minutes as a substitute, having spent the rest of the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Qatari side Al-Duhail. Coutinho began his career in Vasco de Gama's youth system and was signed as a 16-year-old by Inter in 2008. He remained at the Brazilian club on loan for two years before making the move to Italy in 2010. He made 47 appearances for the team and had a spell on loan at Espanyol in 2012. After struggling for minutes at Inter, Coutinho joined Liverpool in January 2013 and went on to become a staple of the side under Brendan Rodgers and then Jurgen Klopp. He made 201 appearances in a Liverpool shirt, recording 54 goals and 44 assists. Coutinho moved to Barcelona in January 2018 in a deal worth £142m and won the La Liga title in his first season at the club, helping them retain it the following year. He was loaned to Bayern Munich for the 2019-20 campaign, coming off the bench to score twice against Barcelona in an 8-2 Champions League semi-final win ahead of a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final. Coutinho returned to Barcelona at the end of the season but suffered a meniscus injury in December that saw him miss the remainder of the 2020-21. He made 16 more appearances for Barcelona the next season to take his total to 106 before joining Villa. Aston Villa can confirm that Philippe Coutinho has completed a permanent move to Vasco da Gama. Everyone at Aston Villa would like to thank Philippe for his service to the club and wish him all the best in his future career. — Aston Villa (@AVFCOfficial) July 4, 2025 ()
