Brentford signs England international Jordan Henderson on 2-year deal

LONDON (AP) — Brentford signed England international Jordan Henderson on a two-year deal on Tuesday and described the midfielder as 'one of the most influential leaders' in the Premier League.
Former Liverpool captain Henderson was a free agent after having his contract terminated by Ajax last week.

'When we became aware of Jordan's availability, it was a pretty simple decision," said Brentford coach Keith Andrews. 'He will drive standards and be a brilliant addition to the squad."
The 35-year-old Henderson returns to the Premier League after leaving Liverpool for Saudi Arabian team Al-Ettifaq in 2023. He only stayed in Saudi Arabia for six months before moving to Dutch giant Ajax.
It was announced last week that he had requested for his Ajax contract to be terminated with a year remaining on his deal.
'We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is: he's still phenomenally fit and he's still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot," Andrews said.

Henderson won a full set of trophies with Liverpool, including the Premier League and Champions League.
His arrival comes after Brentford sold midfielder Christian Nørgaard to Arsenal this offseason.

Soaked Scheffler battles elements to make solid British Open start

World number one Scottie Scheffler blamed wild weather conditions for his wayward driving, but the American still shot a three-under-par first round at the British Open to sit one shot off the lead on Thursday. Scheffler, playing alongside former Claret Jug winners Shane Lowry and Collin Morikawa, got caught in torrential rain midway through his opening round at Royal Portrush. Scheffler only hit three fairways off the tee, but as the skies cleared, he produced two stunning approach shots to birdie the 16th and 17th and card a 68 to remain well in contention for his first British Open victory. "When it's raining sideways, it's actually, believe it or not, not that easy to get the ball in the fairway. Thank you guys all for pointing that out," Scheffler told reporters. "Really only had one swing I wasn't too happy with on maybe the second hole, but outside of that, I felt like I hit a lot of good tee shots, hit the ball really solid, so definitely a good bit of confidence for the next couple rounds." Scheffler made headlines on the eve of the tournament when he said his life was "not a fulfilling" one despite his status at the top of the sport. The 29-year-old said the "euphoric feeling" from winning a golf tournament lasts barely a few minutes before he moves onto his next target. Scheffler said he has received nothing but support from the rest of the field over his comments. "At times I feel like maybe I should be a little less honest. Maybe I shouldn't have said the stuff I said yesterday because now I'm going to get asked about it more," he added. "But really it's just a matter of perspective, and I've had some players come up to me and say that they feel and think the same things. "If anybody has disagreed with me, they haven't said it to my face." kca/mw

🤑 African money boost: Congo to sponsor Barcelona's shirt

FC Barcelona has signed a surprising sponsorship deal with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, valued at over 40 million euros, according to Reuters. The African country will promote its tourism on the club's training shirts for the next four seasons. The amount, between 10 and 11.5 million per year, has caused a stir. The DRC logo will also appear on advertising material, the official magazine, and the club's annual report. According to Reuters, the contract was signed on June 29 and will apply to both the men's and women's teams. A common national marketing strategy. The Congolese Minister of Sports, Didier Budimbu, claims they seek to change the country's international image. However, many wonder if this is a justified investment for a nation with significant social needs. Criticism over the million-euro expenditure has quickly arisen, both inside and outside the country. Barcelona, for its part, adds new revenue without altering the official game jersey. The club continues to activate its "levers" with creativity and some controversy. And it's not alone: Monaco and Milan have also signed similar deals, although for much smaller amounts. Tourism or propaganda? The debate is on. A lot is happening at Brentford - how are you feeling?

If you don't mind us saying so, it feels like you Brentford fans are having a strange summer. The Bees have received some investment - as this page reported earlier in the week - which should, in theory, help improve the squad. Naturally, there's the small matter of the club's charismatic manager leaving, which was far from ideal. The loss of the captain wasn't great either. And, in some respects, is this image below perhaps a scenario that represented a worst nightmare back in May? Forgive us for using an image of our own site but you can see where we are going with this. A lot is going on at the Gtech - it's a lot to digest and the future seems blurry. So please, in detail, tell us what you think about things and how you're feeling. Send your thoughts here
