Carlo Sainz Sr. opts out of race for FIA presidency
Two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr said on Wednesday he was not going to run for president of the International Motoring Federation (FIA), clearing the way for Mohammed Ben Sulayem's re-election.
Sainz, the father of Formula One driver Carlos Sainz Jr, last month said he was considering running for the position as head of motorsport's governing body.
'I have finally decided not to run for the presidency of the FIA in this year's election,' the 63-year-old Sainz wrote in a message on social media.
'I have worked hard these past months to understand in depth the situation at the FIA and the demands and complexities that come with such an important project.
'After thoughtful reflection, I have come to the conclusion that the present circumstances are not ideal to set the grounds for my candidacy.'
Sainz, a four-time winner of the Dakar Rally, said he also did not want his preparations for next year's race to be affected by a bid for the FIA presidency.
There is as yet no official opponent for current FIA boss Ben Sulayem in the December 12 election.
However, his presidency has been punctuated by controversy following the resignations of several of the FIA's key senior staff and his moves to ban all swearing by F1 drivers.

Sainz, who was starting from 19th on the grid, reported brake issues just before smoke started pouring out from the rear of his car. Moments later, flames were visible. Luckily, he was close to the pit entrance and marshals rushed over quickly to put out the fire. 'The car is undriveable. When I say undriveable, it's pulling under braking, no load in high-speed. Undriveable,' Sainz said after retiring from the race. 'We've just seen that we had quite a bit of damage on the floor, so we were lacking quite a lot of downforce. We also had an issue with the brakes from the start of Quali, so too many things going to on to actually push around a high-confidence track like this,' he added. The Austrian Grand Prix extended its contract with F1 as the circuit in Spielberg will feature in the race calendar up until the year 2041 on Sunday. 'I am delighted that Formula 1 will remain at the Red Bull Ring for many years to come," Mark Mateschitz, son of the late Dietrich, who helped fund the return and rebrand of the race at Spielberg in 2014 following an 11-year absence, said. 'I am proud to continue my father's legacy and to preserve the rich history of motor racing in the region of)Styria and at the Red Bull Ring – with and, above all, for the people of the region," he added. 'Austria's close ties to Formula 1 are an excellent foundation for our long-term partnership. Working together, we intend to continue this success story for many years to come." Austria had already secured a contract until 2030 two years ago, and the recent extension now places it alongside the Miami Grand Prix as the only F1 events with agreements extending into the 2040s.
